Forgive me, but I just felt the need to share with you my two most favorite Cats.
This one is obvious:

But this is my all time favorite:

Sorry, just needed to share. Please go back to the usual "debates."

Saw, you one sick PUP. :D

Personally I have a thing for eagle's and Hornets (especially super hornets). Falcons look pretty nice also.

Math; you ever make it out here to Long Island, I'll take you to the Cradle of Aviation Museum... Grumman Holy Ground.
We've still got the Calverton Facility.. the place where EVERY F14 got it's first flight trials, and scene of some truly awsome airshows, "All Grumman, All the Time", back in the good old days. :)
And Yah.. The Tomcat is my favorite too. :)
"ANYTIME BABY!"
Damn, I miss "The Ironworks"..

I gotta say, the worst thing Cheney ever did as SecDef was to cancel the F-14D program in favor of the "little plane that can't." The F-14D would have been the Navy's F-15E, but better. Now there are few Tomcats left, and very few D's were made/converted.
Oh well, the F-14 will always be my favorite plane. It was the plane that truly got me interested in airplanes way back in the day. Back in 1978, I went to my first airshow at the true "Fightertown," NAS Miramar. Saw the F-4 in action, but the Tomcat captured my imagination like nothing else.

Yep, that would be the one I am talking about. Though, I am not calling it a POS. I like the Hornet. It has a tailhook, doesn't it? Therefore, it fits the definition of a great plane. :)
What I am referring to is that it (the E and F versions) are being assigned to the mission that the F-14 has/had. It is a very capable plane. It is just not as potent a threat in the fleet defense mission or the deep strike mission. The F-14D would have been better suited to the deep strike mission in adition to the fleet defense mission. This is where the tomacat community kind of shot itself in the foot by chanting the mantra "Not a pound for air-to-ground" for so long. I guess it really doesn't matter though, as cruise missiles will fulfil the deep strike mission and the Aegis cruisers and destroyers will fill the fleet defense role.

(who really does like the Hornet, but doesn't think it is nearly as capable as the F-14D could/should have been)
