Title: Best video settings?
Post by: LePaul on November 30, 2005, 05:43:42 PM
I just reinstalled AH2 on my PC and was searching the site for suggested video settings.  I have a P4 2.9ghz (2.99, go figure) with an ATI All In Wonder 9800.  I have all the PreLoad options checked on, 512mb textures, downloaded all the skins and have the settings pushed to More Quality...and the distance objects (not in front of game, the bottom slider before you can check off water, etc) to the far right.

I still have trees magically appearing and resizing just as I reach them.

Any tips?  I've got a very clean setup, this PC is the game system so I have everything off before I enter the game.

Thanks!

For that setup:

1)  Do not preload into video RAM.
2)  If your system has 512MB of RAM (or less), then change either the maximum texture size to 256, or disable skins in the game.  If your system has 256MB of RAM, then do both.
3)  Make sure you are using the Catalyst 4.12 drivers from ATI and do not install the Catalyst Control Center.  Install the ATI Control Panel.
4)  Check the number of processes shown in the Task Manager.  It should be around 19 to 21 for a normal XP install.
5)  Check the CPU usage in the Task Manager.  It should bounce from 0 to 1 percent at regular intervals, with nothing running on the desktop.
6)  Try running with and without the terrain optimizations in the video setup.

1) Ok, I'll uncheck that

2) Got 2gb, so I'll remain at 512

3) Yea I have that foolish animated thingy.  Any suggestions on AA and Atrostrophic (sp?) stuff?

4) Aye will check

5) Aye will check

6) Trees are my enemy.  Can we have the sheep and snowmen back? :)

Skuzzy, here's what I mean....

If i look out my side, I see the roads SLOWLY starting to draw...same with trees from ahead and behind.

That would be effected by the ground vis range slider.  You can also do a SHIFT-F4 to get full range view. as well.

Skuzzy, regarding Shift-F4... Whenever I turn it on, it acts as if I've also hit Shift F3 (shortest range) and the world tiles disappear before they reach the horizon. It's been that way for as long as I remember, and I as wondering why that was.

P.S.  I have ground vis slider all the way to the right (closest)

Lepaul, setting the ground detail to the "closest" means you won't see things until they are that close. Move it back to the default 1/3 of the way (full right being minimum, full left being maximum, it would be 1/3 from the right side).

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I was debating this with a squadmate the other night....I'll yank that fella full left then!

Well, I don't know if you want it full left.. that might seem like a bit much. It would be displaying things you really don't need to see. I'd say 2/3 to the left is pretty good. I stay about 1/3 to the left due to my system specs.

FYI: All 3 sliders work the same way. right is "Minimum" left is "maximum".

Well all 3 sliders are, oh, 9/10's to the left side and now life is good!

I havent downloaded the other ATI control panel yet but my frames are still between 47 - 59 FPS

Really?  You've got a very similar setup to mine, too

Thats nothing my ground objects disappear while I am next to them (e.g. fh, vh, bhs, etc...).  If I move *slightly* they reappear.  This happens *all* the time on takeoff, landing, etc...

I also get another neat effect whenever I am over a fleet, the wakes appear magically in the sky above me.  This really helps when the fleet is below cloud cover, as I know where is it :)

7800 GTX latest drivers (HiTech recommended drivers do not support this card)
SB X-Fi sound card
2GB memory
AMD 4400 X2 processor
XP SP2 Professional

This is the *only* game that Hardware vertex processing breaks and I have to turn it off to play.

My framerates are between 45-60fps (limited by LCD monitor)
