My son is a junior in high school. This year, he decided he wanted to try wrestling. So far, he's doing well. He's the varsity 160 lb.
The first tournament was on Monday, but he wasn't supposed to wrestle because he missed the practices over the Thanksgiving holiday. On Monday, he was informed that he would indeed be wrestling, but it would be JV.
He smoked the kid... 20-4. The match was ended in the 2nd round. Evidently, they stop the matches if you get a 15 point lead.

On Friday, they have a big two day tournament in Barstow. I'm not sure what the reasons are, but my son will be wrestling varsity 172.
Gawdamn, I'm proud.

Wow, the state of California let you breed?
J/K.
Some people really get into wrestling. I got out once I found out that Kicking is not a valid move.

Just hope he doesn't get cauliflower ear or any communicable diseases that can be found on the wrestling mats. I recommend wrapping him is plastic wrap just to be sure. And don't ever let him do the diets to get into a lower weight class. I could carry on why not to but I think you probably know why.

Congrats. My son was to start on the wrestling team this year, but now he's grounded and lucky to be walking after he rode off on some kid's 4 wheeler (without supervision and without a helmet) and upended it against a tree. He's lucky all he did was slice his leg open and mess up his knee. No wrestling now. I'm just glad it was his leg and not his damn fool head.

Yeah... we got the warnings from the coaches already. As for his weight, he seems to be going up, not down.

wrestling is a great individual sport
I did it in 8th grade and three years in high school with enough judo "thrown" in between to get a brown belt.
my youngest son wrestled his three years in hs.
Great sport, one of the hardest as far as conditioning and strength per pound go
If your son is into it, send him to a wrestling camp over the summer, the experience gained at a good one of those will give him an edge his senior year
good luck to your son Sandman

Don't forget to show him the "Chin into the collarbone" trick, gain a good second on the opponent.

Congrats Proud Daddy! Thats great to hear! What are his chances that he'll regain his spot on Varsity? Hope he gets his spot back!

<-- wrestled in HS freshman and junior years. 132 lb
the biggest thing i learned and noticed was conditioning and flexibility. a muscle bound stiff guy on our team lost a match in 19 seconds (pinned) by a wirey fast guy he couldn't out manuever.
stretch and more stretching, every day will help.

Very cool.
The college I went to (Cal Poly SLO) was a wrestling power at the time. We would get more people in the gym for a wrestling match than for a basketball game. I still remember the day we beat Dan Gable's team at Iowa State in Iowa. They replayed the entire match on the local TV station.

you wrestled in college bro?

No, my roomate was on the team though. I played Basketball. I wasn't too bad for a short fat white guy.
Edit - that sounds misleading... I played basketball in HS, not in college.
