Neat Pic. :aok

that one is cool, but i personally like the Do 335: fastest piston engined plane ever.

ONE of the fastest. damned ugly though!
-
It did pack quite a punch though! I thought it had an internal bomb-bay?
-
i think one varient had an internal bomb bay, but im not sure. what i do know is that indeed it was, and is the fastest piston-engine plane EVER.
-
It was just a clever design, why weren't more designs made with 2 engines behind eachother? They did keep making them with the engines next to eachother
-
Do 335 is a beautiful plane and fast as hell, would've been one hell of a fighter plane most likely aswell as a supreme night fighter and attack plane.
However, it was not the fastest piston engined plane.
XP 47 reached just above 500mph level flight (prototype only).
Do 335 had a top speed of about 475mph at just above 20k for the single seater. Heavily armed though.
-
ok, fastest piston engined plane to see service EVER.
-
Well... see service, depends on how one defines it ;)
It saw service with "erprobungskommando" afail. Or a "test squadron" more or less flying most new plane types before final delivery to squadrons.
It is still not know wether any of the 30-35 (of which 14 were prototypes) A0's (pre-production) and A1's (first production version) saw any action.
Reports from Allied pilots said something similair to "A very strange looking plane but too fast to catch" being spotted, it is not know wether it was the Do 335 though.
Would be an awsome addition to AH but we will never see it I am afraid, not enough Data on the plane its service record.

"ok, fastest piston engined plane to see service EVER."
P-51H top speed: 487 MPH
P-47M had a top speed in the 470 MPH range
Ta-152H supposedly reached 470 MPH or more as well.
Supermarine Spiteful's top speed was in the 490 range; almost as many of them were built as Do 335's (in other words, not many)
The Do 335 was indeed fast for something with propellers, but its speed was in the same category as several other unusually fast late-model fighters.

But alot heavier armed ;)

But mine has a death ray! Bring on your nooks and b29's I'll vulch you from teh moon!
-
ok, of the war:cry STOP MAKING FUN OF ME!!!
-
Smidsy just giving you some info about it, not making fun of you :)
-
De Haviland Hornet was over 470mph as well.
-
not forgetting the modern russian tupolev. worls fastest prop plane, its above 575mph for sure. apparently some jets need to go to afterburners to keep up, yikes!
-
Ok shouldn't this be limited to piston/prop and no turbo prop aircraft.
Also the record is held by a striped down f8f bearcat ,528 mph.

Nope...P-47M could do 475-480 and the P-51H was capable of 487 mph.
More Trabants have raced at Le Mans, than Do 335s that saw combat.

That was an average speed. Rarebear managed 541 mph on the downwind leg of the record run.

I forgot to mention that this speed run was done at low level, under 1,000 feet.

FYI all you Do335 fans...
The Air & Space museum annex out by Dulles Air port in Washington has one of these bad boys...
I's a beautiful plane...but I was struck by its size. It's quite a bit larger than a FW-190F8 and P-47D(40?) which are parked directly accross from it.
:aok
-
Well the P-38 and P-47 proved that size actually did not matter, the bigger the better :aok

I'll drink to that!

In the case of booze, the size DOES matter though :aok

GIN!!! CANADIAN WHISKEY!! VODKA!!! SAKE!!! WOOT TOOT!! GOOD TIMES!!!

Too bad they removed the bottle of liquer out of the P-38...
-
no, it was a flask. the bottle is in the L-Gays.

Wow, I'm glad someone mentioned the Bearcat so I didn't have to risk being a fool...
Anyhow, it is my understanding that the F8F bearcat is the fastest non-jet aircraft ever produced and I'm glad I wasn't alone.

Rarebear, as impressive as it is, doesn't represent a military aircraft. It certainly hasn't been built in any substantial quantity. Military-spec F8F's were known more for their outstanding climbing ability than for maximum true level speed.

Oh, the Do335, is still the fastes twin engine, non jet powered plan in the world. Maybe im not coreckt but i think it is still so.

Its possible that a Merlin powered Twin Mustang could have a slight edge
