Kind of historically headache inducing reading about the parallels to the current conflict.
Rationale for Vietnam faked in 1964, NSA historian wrote
"A National Security Agency analysis released yesterday contends that an alleged 1964 attack on U.S. ships in the Gulf of Tonkin, which the Johnson administration cited as justification for greater U.S. military involvement in Vietnam, never happened, casting further doubt on the rationale for escalation of the conflict."

Wasn't the invasion of Cuba much the same way. A ship got blown up and the American public where outraged, but it was never proven that the cuban's blew it up?

The USS Maine. Still hasn't been proven if it was an accident or sabotage (by the US or Cubans) iirc. It also served to bring the "muckrakers" into prominence in the media.
