Title: Skuzzy + other guru's, My bottleneck
Post by: 38ruk on December 04, 2005, 06:46:16 PM
Hello all , I ordered a X850XT Platinum edition , but thinking about it , i ran some tests and here is what ive found.  I just upgraded the cpu to a 3700+ and i find if i overclock the cpu my framerates go up 5-10 fps in a loop than i watch sitting on a CV .  Now if i overclock just my video card i see NO improvment at all .  Maybe my X800 pro doesnt respond well to OC'in or the 3700+ is the bottleneck . It's A 754 socket so this is the max cpu i can install , Now do i cancel the X850 , and go to a 939 MB CPU combo , or install the 850 and hope my X800 was just unresponsive to the overclock .    THX     38

i would look for a X800XL , it has 16 pipes and is priced fair . with ATI and NVIDIA releasing new cards , you might find a good deal on a 6800GT , or X800XT , which the later is somewhat faster than a 800XL . ooppps , there is also a X800GT that is supposed to be good and cheap , havent research that one thou, might only be pcie. 38
EDIT , i ran a 9800pro in this board for a month or so  , it wasnt a bad card , time has just marched on hehe

NO current CPU can push any of new range of graphics cards to their maximum.
To get anywhere close current 'top end' CPU speeds would have to almost double.
Unless they find a way of doing this or getting the graphics card GPU to do more it's going to be like this for while.

Only big difference is with the current high end video cards you can typically run higher resolutions, more eye candy etc without losing frame rates. This is only because the extra work is done by the GPU.
