Ran across this 190 blip. Have no idea who wrote it & where he learned to spell or who the German pilot was, but well here it is.
Knew a German fighter jock from War Two (he was the amnager at the Hanau Rod & Gun Club while I was stationed there a long time ago) who said the best bird he ever flew was the FW-190A. HE'd been in North Africa flying Bf-109F(Trop)s, same ouitfit as Marseille who he admired extravagantly. Knew most of the Kannonen, of course, at least to speak to.
Said he felt there wasn't anything taht was any better than his FW-190A and few things as good, at least up to around 6 or 7000 meters. Above taht altitude, he wasn't much interested in getting into a furball with P-51s or P-38s (though he considerd the P-38 mainly dangerous because of its abilityt to fly high and bounce you if you weren't watching). Didn't like Spits at all (got shot down a couple of times by Spits while in Bf-109s, once into the Med off Italy; you should have heard him cuss the Italians for rescuing him so he was back in the war instead of getting picked up by teh Allies and becoming a Kriegie "in a nice safe camp" as he put it).
He did not think the P-51 was anything to take on casually, and complained about its ability to fly damn near forever and then still have enough gas to get home. Asked about the FW-190D and he said the radial-engined birds handled better, "much quicker when you need to manuever" he said. Reckon he'd have known... He didn't ahve much concern about any of the Russian birds except for the numbers you were apt to face. Considered German aircraft and pilots notably superior, on avaerage though he admitted the best Russian aircraft and pilots were to be dealt with very cautiously. and one comment I think I'll recall for a long time: "Young man, you must ALWAYS see the other fellow first. Otherwise he will kill you, no matter how good you are. Ya, always see him first". Applies in just about any combat situation, eh?
