No,but I've raced against them. I know I would like to drive one. I know there reliable suffer from tail swaping (You NEVER lift mid-corner, always stay in the gas.) Learned that from running a Boxster S. :D
There good cars, good reliablity, and a great compeditor to the Miatas. And I'm glad they are no longer in production and are hard to find.

MX5 is short of head and knee room for me but the MR2 fits like a glove, even with the top down. Solstice and S2000 are cool too, but fit me even worse than the MX5.
The more I read about the MR Spyder, the more I like it. I just need to find one on the west coast that hasn't been riced out, and some money.

the only small japanese convertible i like is the S2000.

S2000 is bad ass, but doesn't fit me, and is kinda heavy.

Form follows function... There's nothing on that car that doesn't need to be where it is. Zero ornamentation.
And the MR layout is an advantage IMHO. Better balance, less inertia.

Why not go with a mid 90's M3? About the same price...test drive one, then report back.

MR2 Spyders handle pretty good, but it's a Corolla 1.8 engine 1ZZFE. The tiptronic version is a complete dog and is outperformed by even the automatic. The only way to make power is to pay a ridiculous amount for the Veilside turbo kit ($8k last I saw). It's a returnless fuel system, so any type of forced induction requires quite a bit of time & money.
IMHO, they're only worth buying used. I'd never pay the price for a new one.

Z3 is the shizznit. I like it much more than the 4 or 5. Dunno why, just do.

Here's an example (http://www.pashnit.com/pics/road/morgan3a.jpg) of the local roads. I'm more interested in handling than power. And yeah I'm looking at used ones. If I ever have a desire for more power I'll do a 2ZZ swap or something.

That road screams Lotus Elise to me. 2ZZ + 6 speed + lotus suspension on a 1980 pound car :aok The Forced Fed Elise is really fast too for about 8k more.

I sat in an Elise once. Knees were wedged into the dash, and the top of the windshield was about chin level. :)

Rip I like small nimble cars. The problem is I don't fit in most of them. MR2 is a rare exception, which is why I'm interested and looking for more info.
I go to the SF car show every year and sit in different cars. I fit in about 30% of the cars I am interested in. I would have had an MX5 or RX7 a long time ago if they weren't so cramped.

I see. You wouldn't like the bolstered seats in an M3. They snug my lat muscles and I'm 200 lbs. Plenty of head room though, I'm 6'1".

I don't have any problem with "lat muscles" but with headroom and legroom.

Plenty of respect for them from racing against them. Only bad thing I've heard is relating to fuel leaks. Luckily, the 1ZZ-FE does not seem prone to early engine failure like the 2ZZ-GE.
There is a good forum out there...spyderchat.com. I'm sure they have a "maintenance" section that you can look through to find common themes.
Make sure you get the LSD to get power down on exits.
Not that it matters...but you know it doesn't have a trunk...I mean none at all...not just hyperbole "it has no trunk", but in reality there isn't one.
I'm surprised you didn't fit in the Elise. My brother is 6'5" 240lb and fits fine. Although it is funny to watch him climb in. I thought the Elise had a ton more room than the S2000 or Miata once you got inside.

spent an unpleasant day helping put a water pump in one of those mr2 thingies... after that the guy (daughters boyfriend) said I had to drive the car cause it was so fast.

My father owns one and I drive it oftenly.
Toyota MR2 Spyder.
Its engine is small, dont expect much 'power' but its a nice little car to go cruising around.
Personally, I hate it cause its small, I feel like im in a tin can waiting to get smashed by the nearest SUV. But the car itself is a nice ride.

Chevrolet engineers and designers took lessons learned from their ultra-successful C5-R Corvette Racing program and applied them directly to the new ZO6, and the results are spectacular. With 500HP in an approximately 3130-pound (1419.7 kg) package, the ZO6 delivers 0-60 performance of less than 4 seconds, will cover the quarter-mile in the 11's, and deliver a top speed in excess of 190 mph. It is the fastest, most powerful car ever offered by Chevrolet and GM. The new Z06 was developed in conjunction with the all-new Corvette C6-R ALMS racer, and the engineers ended up with a totally unique vehicle that has its own powertrain, body structure and chassis system, which are distinct from other Corvette models.

The package of aero tweaks delivers a Cd of .31.
Helping stop the ZO6 are 14-inch cross-drilled front disc brakes with six-piston calipers and 13.4-inch cross-drilled rear rotors with four-piston calipers (the calipers are painted bright red). The ZO6 also has specific, ten-spoke, 18 x 9.5-inch front wheels with 275/35ZR18 tires and 19 x 12-inch rear wheels with 325/30ZR19 tires, a 3-inch-diameter exhaust with bi-mode mufflers and larger polished stainless steel tips, engine, transmission and differential oil coolers; and steering cooler, and a rear-mounted battery to improve weight distribution. The interior has some unique touches including a revised gauge cluster, smaller diameter steering wheel and lightweight two-tone seats with more aggressive bolsters.

Ahh, just realised nobody pointed it out. Actually, for quite some time an MR2 dominated the JGTC circuits. Can't remember if it was GT300 or GT500. Either way, the team sold the car to build a new customer race car with a Nissan powerplant... and promptly were stomped on by their old car :)

I have a Best Motoring with Orido in an MR-S smoking some cars with >100 bhp more than the Toyota.
