I mentioned this on the Skins forum, but it'd also be appropriate here:
How about allowing players to have a truly custom skin--a completely unique skin for their aircraft with personalized markings/noseart/etc, rather than as it is now, where it MUST be a historical aircraft.
Obviously, we'd want this restricted so that it would have to be appropriate for the period (no modern markings schemes) and HTC would still have final say of "yes" or "no." I'd think it'd really help with immersiveness to be able to decorate your plane, and I can certainly see the benefit to squads to be able to develop their own markings schemes.

HTC is more rigorous in restricting the skins on aircraft that are brought upto AH2 standards, not less.
It won't happen for that and for technical reasons.

What would be the harm of fully custom skins as long as they're kept appropriate, using the same or similar schemes as the historical ones (IE, mid-war USN/MC skins in "tricolor" scheme, single Star and Bar on the upper port/lower starboard wing surface, fuselage number forward of the fuselage national ensign, etc)?
HTC would still have the right to turn down a skin for whatever reason (anachronistic or otherwise inappropriate insignia/markings, inappropriate or derogatory noseart). This would just allow players to make the game a little more personal.

The fact is that the number of skins they are allowing is certainly pushing the limits of video memory as it is. To add a huge number more of skins that will be far more contentions as there is no guiding rule would incur significant penalties in both system performance as well as community issues as people started to complain that person A got his special skin, why not me!
In short, for a myriad of reasons, it isn't going to happen.
