Turn everything off, let it sit a while.  While it's sitting, unplug/replug everything.  Unplug unnecessary stuff in there too, in case a lower load on the power supply will help.  Consider swapping in a new drive cable.

If it doesn't work the next time, put it in an IDE to USB adaptor (You do have one of those right?  They're like $20) and see if another computer will recognize it and spin it up over the USB connection.

If it still doesn't work, you have 2 options.  Send it to a drive recovery place and for $1000 they'll recover your data by pulling the drive apart in a clean room and putting the platters in another hard drive case.  Or try the freezer trick.  Wrap the hard drive in a plastic bag, with an ide cable and power cord splitter attached but the end of the cables sticking out of the bag.  Squeeze all the air out of the bag, and do something to seal the end of the bag around the cables (rubber bands, silicone glue, whatever).  Put the drive in the freezer and let sit for a few hours.  Pull out of the freezer, but leave inside the bag to help prevent condensation from forming as the drive warms up.  That's why you squeezed all the air out before sealing the bag btw.  Attach to the computer while still cold, and power it up and see if it works.

I've heard of this working for long enough to copy the entire drive contents, and I've heard of guys who had to refreeze the drive a dozen times because it only worked for a few minutes each time before it warmed up too much to work.  In any case...

THE FREEZER TRICK IS A LAST RESORT IF YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE

It probably just got overheated, so try soaking it in ice water.

Seriously, I saved some vital data from Fujitsu drives by freezing them in a fridge and swiftly copying everything before they start to bang their heads agaist the wall. Doing such things you have to be carefull with condensation, I wrabbed them in plastic bags with only connectors out.

OTOH several years ago I had an IBM drive that refused to start up when colder then +20-25C. I discovered it in winter ;) and had to heat it on a radiator to save the data.

not sure what the rules are in your part of the world but around here you don't get the right to call your father a dumb-ass until you are paying for his food and roof.

Get a free Knoppix (http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html) Live CD linux and setup your pc bootup from CD.

It could be still possible to read HD and copy the important data.

Well I've convinced them that all I needed was a boot up disk and not to reset the harddrive..

I swear he had to go get a supervisor just to tell him what all the 0's and 1's meant..

-I don't know what they are but It ain't my job neither-

:furious

Shut it off, and ask a linux-educated someone to start it up with a linux bootable CD like knoppix.

You'll be able to copy all your stuff on a external HDD (USB or firewire) and you won't lose anything.

EDIT: Duh! Xjazz beat me to it...

Be careful with the M$ win xp recovery console.
It can wipe out your MBR or partition tables in a blink and without much warning.

If there is one lesson you should learn from this...

It is BACK UP any important files.

Computers crash, hard drives die, even programs from that wonderfull mega corperation Microsoft as common and easy to use as word can currupt files.

BACK UP anything and everything you do not want to lose.

All modern hard drives implement some kind of "Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology" or SMART.

Most of diagnostic utilities can read SMART data.

Most of hardrive makers provide free utilities, some are even compatible with all drives like Data Lifeguard by Western Digital.

Most provide bootable CD ISO images with some or all utilities like BlastMax by Matrox for example (cloning and partitioning).

Using those utilites will provide you ample warning when HD start failing, and when this happens, you can clone your disk (in most of the cases) and you don't have to reinstall OS and applications nor there's need to restore from backups (real time saver) except when some of the data was corrupted.

If cloning wasn't succesful and no backups are available and if you really need your precious data back, you'll need 'Data Recovery" service.

I believe Gillware does it for 400 bucks only per HD.
