I am looking at getting another one. I am going for a single pump this time though, 10 pumps per shot gets tiring after awhile. Anyway, it appears as though the only single pumps Daisy has are in the "youth" section so I was looking at this model http://www.daisy.com/shopping/customer/product.php?productid=16133&cat=249&page=1 . It seems to have the best FPS of the youth lot. I looked at the Crosman sight but they didn't have prices so it was somewhat useless. The break barrels didn't seem like they would be too bad, but how do you charge them (can't say the other c word)? I'm not looking for any super gun, just a cheap $50 or less single pump gun. If there is nothing in that range, about about a sight? I was looking at the laser ones but they are kind of pricey, the sight I got with my Daisy 880 isn't extremely powerful, so i'm looking into upgrading it.

Use iron sights. If you're shooting at ranges you need a sight/scope for with a BB gun then you need something other than a BB gun :)
My 11-87, Marlin .22LR (the greatest plinking gun there ever was!) and air rifles all have iron sights with whiteout on the sights. Even my Remingotn 700 in .300 Win Mag had iron sights with a See-Thru scope mount. Can you say "FREEZE, GOPHER!"
And the cheapest targets you can ever buy are Cheerios. Then you can start shooting 1/2 of a Cheerio. Fire a few thousand rounds at Cheerios and someday when you're all grown up you won't be slinging lead at various animals like the other hoopie's out there in the woods. I've used 1 box of shotgun slugs (5 per box) the last 2 years and still have 1 left after bagging 4 deer :)
-
I like my iron sights, I can hit something at 20 feet away (granted there is no outside influence such as wind). Sometimes I like to go for distance though, just for a challenge. Besides when dusk starts approaching, I find that sights make it easier to see the target as my vision diminishes quite rapidly.

Keep your eyes open for a gun show.
At most of them they have 50 dollar chinese Air Guns. I have one of them. It is a single pump, but it's a hellofa load to pump it. It shoots about 1100 FPS every shot and is very accurate.
-
Whiteout on the sights helps. That or if you can find some "glow paint" which is exactly what it sounds. Paint it on the sights and they gently glow in the dark. If whiteout didn't work so well I'd look for a bottle of that stuff.

You'll put your eye out. :rofl

BB Guns....hmmmmm. For general plinking I prefer my Ruger 10-22. 500 rounds of Wichester XX 37 grain jacketed hollow points only cost about $10-12. I can spend all day at the range plinking with it. My AR-15 is nice also but a bit more expensive to shoot. I have gotten 2 inch groups with iron sights with it at 200 yrds using good match grade ammo but that stuff is pricey. Mostly I shoot reloads.
-
Kid... get a Ruger redhawk in 44 mag.
You can get speer plastic bullets for it. The case is plastic and takes a regular large rifle primer to power the plastic bullet... it will shoot 1/2" groups at 15' as you get better you canh shoot 44 specials out of it and then buy some reloading equipment and load light 44 mag rounds with Unique and cast or swagged lead slugs...
or... you can buy an old single shot bolt action 22 rifle and a couple a bricks of 22 long rifles... I would go for a ruger single six revolver in 22 tho or if you can find an old K22 smith and wesson in 22..
My first BB gun was a daisy lever action that I shot till it wore out after 10's of thousands of bb's in the back yard... my next gun was a 22 bolt action and a Hi Standard 22 semi auto pistol followed by a 45 acp colt and 38 special smith and wesson when I got old enough (12)
have fun... join the NRA

200 yards....
iron sights.....
2 inches......
:huh

My eyes are only 20/15 corrected these days... no way I could get that kind of group at 200 yards with open sights..
I can get a better group than that but it is for one shot only.

Well My AR-15 has lead inserts in the stock and fore grips. Overall weight of the rifle is 23 pounds with a loaded 10 round magazine. Pretty much NO recoil when it's fired. It also has a factory bull barrel on it. I figure after I get a new crome plated bolt assembly, some trigger group work done to drop the trigger pull to 2 pounds, and a few other odds and ends it will be a tack driver. My goal is to start shooting in "service rifle" comp. If I'm lucky I might qual for the Presidents Cup match in a few years. I have a long way to go but I'm working on it.

Anything requiring powder isn't going to go over well. I shoot in my back yard and let's just say the law doesn't enjoy people launching .22 cal bullets, not to mention the damned noise ordinances. I'm going to keep looking though, maybe Wal Mart has semi descent BB guns.
-
Take a 2 liter coke bottle and tape it over the muzzel on any .22 rimfire rifle and it sounds like a pellet gun. For a few shots anyways. My kid has a Crossman 760 pump BB/Pellet gun that is nice. It's multi pump though and your looking for single pump correct?
-
I'd prefer single pump, but Crosman has some nice multi's. Oh and thanks for the like Storch, been on it since my post before this one. The single pumps seem to max out at about 300 FPS which is to be inspected I think. Not really going to be at 1000FPS in one pump. The major thing i'm looking at is reliability for about $50.
-
there are 1100fps single pumps. I have a techforce that i use on the racoons for one shot kills at 30 yds with through the eye accuracy utilizing .177 match grade pellets
-
Ahhhh alright. Is it illegal to kill squirrels? I thought it was legal to use BB guns as "pest control".
-
Ask your local law enforcement to be sure, but chances are you'll need a hunting liscense and will have to do it in season.

Accidents happen........right? I've put in a few hours searching for BB gun laws in Colorado and can find next to nothing except "BB guns aren't considered 'firearms' under Colorado law, however they may be used in criminal acts blah blah blah." I just make sure I have a good backstop, or I shoot in my basement. The thing sounds like a nail gun at full power so there's no weird sounds going on there.
Oh also, do I need any sort of safety classes or anything for shooting at a range? And what are the advantages to shooting at ranges vs. backyard? It's going to cost about $10-15 for a day so i'm hesitant.
-
One...
Don't take your air rifle to a shooting range.
Two...
Get a cardboard box, newspaper and a scrap piece of spare old carpeting and build yourself a trap.
Fill the box (Computer box, copy paper box...any decent sized box) with crumpled newspapers. Take the carpeting and line the far wall of the box with it (drape it over the edge if you want to...will be just fine) and then lay an unfolded newspaper over the carpeting.
For nothing more than the cost of things you've already got laying around you have a perfectly good BB trap that is safe to use indoors.
-
Right, i've been meaning to build, or buy, a trap. They have one at the store for $15-20 and it inclodes the targets that flip around on the bar. I was going to build on out of diamond plate.....but then I didn't want to bend it. I was going to build one of of plywood....but lumber is expensive. Box with newspaper and carpet and such will work fine though, if I can find a box. Airguns are a no no at ranges? Or people make fun of you?
-
What's the point of taking your airgun to a range? Spending money to get in and use their facility when you can do this in your basement?
Paper plates make perfect targets. Simply touch a sharpie marker to the paper plate and shoot at that. Shoot at cheerios. Shoot at tiny tiny tiny targets and shoot them often.
After a few thousand shots you'll start to get the hang of things and when the time comes to move up you will have sound fundamentals.
I haven't shot twice at a deer in 3 years. The last one I did I had just changed to a new type of slug (a solid copper sabot) and at 120 yards I aimed high (expecting bullet drop of approx 10") and hit high.
It pays off. Each year before deer season our club has a turkey shoot and I usually go home with a turkey, ham and enough cash to cover what I invested in the events of the day. I haven't bought a turkey for thanksgiving or christmas yet! In fact if I bag a wild turkey in the spring I give the one(s) I win to the folks.
-
Ah right I see what you are saying. I've heard of some traps having carpet hang from the top to slow the round in increments. I'll try some of your ideas, thanks.
-
They work and it takes 5 minutes to make one. You can leave the box top open and not have any worries with ricochets also.
While it's not a good idea to put used BBs and pellets into your rifle they can be reused if taken from the trap.
Good luck :) My 'cat thwacker' weapon of choice is a Crosman .177 pellet rifle. CO2 powered, semi automatic with a 12 round magazine. It's actually a little revolver in a rifle's body but you can put get a few shots off with wadcutter pellets and get cats off of your porch quite easily with it. I'm still a regular air rifle user though a Marlin .22LR semi auto is my plinker of choice.

You Ohio pansies need to get real laws that allow you to shoot "real" guns and at real ranges!
470 H+H
Thats hunting.
Turn 18 Nirvana, and I will take you shooting at our range. It's outdoors, and the longest pit is 1000 yds. Mind you, if you are bored, you can shoot the .50 at the mountain in the background a mile and a half away.
-
It's not a bad law given how flat Ohio is. Around Columbus using my .300 Win Mag is asking for trouble because those rounds go and don't stop.
Oddly enough we can use anything we want to hunt coyotes. I've killed 3 with a .22 and not a one with a 12 gauge slug. One more during turkey season. This was actually something called a Coy-Dog which is a cross breed between a wild coyote and a domesticated dog. They're a black base with white patches but they're definately coyotes. I've also killed two with a bow, 3-4 with a 30-30 and who knows how many with the .300 win mag.
At any rate shooting a deer at 300 yards isn't hunting. Shooting deer inside 10 yards is hunting. I've seen Mr Jackie Bushman on t.v. take shots at 250 yards where you could do jumping jacks and the deer wouldn't see you. Cheating! Shotguns, slugs and open sights is where it's at.
I'll change my mind when I make a trip to Canada in search of Caribou. The 700's coming with me on that trip :)
"Real Ranges" PFFFT! No admission and the dirt was free.
Growing up we had a skeet range in the back yard. Also 15(guestimate) tons of free dirt dropped in the back yard for our shooting range at home. Our dirt pile is 8 feet high, 25 feet wide and 20 feet thick. Railroad ties with 2x4's and door hinges holding up plywood and pressboard target sheets.

A fun pellet gun I had for a while was a revolver that was co2 powered and had a ten shot rotary clip kinda thing.. it looked like a cross between a n frame smith and a colt revolver and had adjustable target sights... it seemed very accurate.

I'm not touching Co2, too damn expensive.
Once again Bodhi, you around Colorado Springs? I might make it down there in 2 years, but I won't be paying $3.50/bullet for the .50;) I plan to have a "real" gun by then though. And if I remember correctly, there are bounties on coyotes in some counties, possibly the whole state.
I picked up a standard powered laser sight by Daisy today, was $3.98 so I said what the hell. Need to go try it out now ;)

Got a Gamo....fixed barrel and scope. Action is pulled from a lever under the barrel. Shoots at 1000 FPS.
THAT PUPPY ROCKS!!!!!:O
