Great find!
Funny thing, not long ago I posted a oral history from a guy who was in the unit that did this:

My favorite part was that after they made sure it was safe with a sheep, the next test was on a LT -- before they tried it on the important guy, the SGT.

I like how they say flying over a suspended cable and grabbing it 'foolproof' and 'absolutely safe'.
There's about 10 things I can think of that could go wrong. :D

That is the basis of the Fulton Sky Hook. The system has been modified and improved over the years as a way to retrive pilots from enemy territory. The Air Force messed with this in the late 60's early 70's time frame using a ballon and a modified C-130. They would air drop the whole system down to the pilot. The pilot would get everything situated and hooked up and the release a small ballon that the C-130 would then snag in flight. Reel the pilot right up into the cargo bay.

Post that on PETA boards......:O

I live in Chesapeake, VA and drive past the PETA HQ twice a day going to and from work. I always have the urge to toss dead animals or something out the window as I go past. Anyway one of the local radio stations here FM99 WNOR has a PETA Fishing Tournament every year right in front of their building. They are right on the waterfront in downtown Norfolk. It's always a good time and they always protest but hey, the game wardens are there to make sure everyone is legal so it really pisses them off.
Also true story here. 5 years ago I was coming home from work and as I come down the road I see this huge crowd in the middle of the street surrounding this pickup truck. Come to find out this guy had broke down right in front of their building (during deer season) with 2 deer that him and his buddy had shot in the back of the truck. The PETA people saw it from their office windows and went nuts on this guy. I wanted to stop and help the guy out but you have to see some of the big burly women of questionable sexual orientation that work there. Needless to say I was a little scarred and just had to wish the guy the best of luck as I drove past. I did see his buddy holding a shotgun between his legs in the truck though.:aok

One of the guys in the squad who crews on C-130's and is just back from Kuwait was telling me about the Fulton setup. He said they don't use it anymore, but it was pretty safe and reliable. He said the only time they lost anyone is when a pilot they just reeled in, on a practice recovery I think, became disoriented and walked right out the back to his death.
