I think it's a good start.

I also think that the control surfaces have too much of a "shadow" on them -- it's far too visible, it would be much more subtle.

+1

And if you guys with the software and the talent to make all these awsome skins (which I don't) make more winter skins we might get one.  Go check SkyChimps post in the Wishlist and add your .02, he's already got a map done.

Anyone know what the cheapest graphics program is that I could use to take a crack at skinning?  I'd love to see a skin by me in the game, but cant justify dropping big coin on a graphics prog. just for that reason.

Oh yea, that skin is seckse, cant wait to fly it.

Start scouring E-Bay for one of the newer versions of Photoshop. I picked up the full version of PS7 for $25.

I've seen a couple of your works, and what I'm wondering about is the resolution you are working on. The feel of the panel lines suggest 1024 res, but the markings are pretty much fuzzy, and that's why I'm getting confused.

My guess is that you work with larger markings and then shrink them to proper size. If it is so, this is a must-avoid when skinning aircraft, because reduction of size fades out the borders with anti-aliasing, and the end result is that the markings look pretty awful.

The best way is the long way around - make your own markings, and start at the proper size from the beginning, so you don't have to enlarge or shrink to the proper surface. This also means the same markings for wings, tails, fuselage etc.. must all be separately made.

The shadows you gave to moving surfaces at their adjacent borders is a nice touch, but like Krusty said it could be a little bit overdone. Perhaps a little adjustment in opacity would be preferable.

Finally, the green undercoat, underneathe the winter white, seems to be a bit awkward in color. That's probably because the profile pic you used is a bit off in color.

Ah, a final tip - when taking screen shots, always put your plane at an angle where the sunlight shines down - dark and shadowed surfaces make it pretty hard for fellow skinners to comment. You can change the time at the arena settings so the sun is at a different position.

All the profiles i have of that yellow 4 are that shade of green it's RML72its is kind of funky

If anything the crosses would be solid, not clouded as your image.

Its subjective as all opinions are but the cross is called "weathered balken cross" its dirty and muddy. it was made to look that way, by a very talented skinner.  available for download  HERE (http://www.acesartwork.co.uk/)
I feel and this is only my opinion, that it makes no sense to have a  "weathering" layer yet keep the markings  pristine.
I see alot of that Around here.

There needs to be some room for artistic interpretation. Im not making skins  just to have  an  exact copy of someone else's profile. I have my own creative imput, thats the weathering aspect for me .

Its a personal choice to use weathered markings.
I can see if your computer resolution is well... just ok how one may see them as cloudy but to me they are razor sharp, only.. dirty.
to each there own

Being weathered and being fuzzy is a different thing.

Speaking of the iron cross... somebody caught the "4", but you also have the wrong style cross. Those early thin crosses went out with early 109Es. See the one on the profile, that's more representative of what the 109Fs used during their short lifespan.

EDIT: More like the profile, but also with black thin lines outside the white. Check the default F-4 skin from AH for what I mean.

Raven, I don't know what your underside crosses look like, but the ones under the wings ought to have thick white areas like the fuselage, but the upper surfaces ought to be narrow like you have there.
