Title: NFL Playoff Picture...
Post by: Nefarious on December 13, 2005, 07:28:00 PM
Hows your team doing...My Steelers have a tough road.

Viks, Browns, Lions...But right now were slotted #2 AFC Wildcard. But we cant lose this week or any week after that. If we do get there we have to the play the Bengals. Im sure, matter of fact, positive, we can beat them on the road. We beat the Bengals on the Road, and they nearly lost to the Browns at Home!

I'm kind of dissapointed in the Steelers, We did so great last season, and here we're struggling to get to the playoffs this season, with a team that is not consistent. I think the Steelers havnt been consistent for a long time. But we manage to do fairly well for the last 5 years.

I think we need to ween ourselves from the Steeler Running game. And move to a game where passing is our key. We have talented Recievers and Ends, and a Good QB, although "Injured", We can use the running game where the situation dictates.

Unfortunatley, I'm not the coach, and I can't nudge Bill (Although I've met him 3 times) and say "Look, we can't depend on our Running game to win every football game", "Our defense, while Stellar, can't be left to win our games either."

"We need to throw long, short, over the middle and play our games with more confidence in make big plays downfield, when we need too!"

Theres my Rant, See you in the Playoff's Bungals, this isn't your year.

I see Denver in the playoffs, hopefully going second round at the least.  And I hope Indianapolis implodes, hate to see teams do so well.

How 'bout them Cowboys! They will win the NFC East then die a horrible death in the 2nd round.

I've been thinking...

How well the Philadelphia Eagles do is usually the inverse of how well the PSU Nittany Lions do.

For as long as I can remember, if one was doing well, the other wasn't...

Vikings.
After a Horrid start have now won 6 in a row.
Mainly because they discovered Defence is part of the game too.
Problem is untill this past weekend they forgot how to play offence.
In that stretch they havent beaten anybody of note besides the Giants. In one of the weirder games I've seen in recent memory

Next up they get a damn good Steelers team in a game I think will be closer then people expect but with the Vikes ultimately loosing.

Playoff prediction.
Anybodies guess. Slim chance at a wildcard spot. But a better chance of slipping in as division winner if the bears loose one more before the final game between the Vikes and Bears which could end up being for the Division.

IF by some miracle they get in. The offence will either finally gell and catch fire and win a couple games before being crushed.
ORRR they will get destroyed outright from the first snap.

Team is too unpredictable to predict with any certainty

Could go either way for them. They have both Washington and Carolina up.
They have already lost to Washington once this year. and Carolina isnt a a gimme either.

On the other hand. Both are winnable games

Yeah, with all those first round picks they're getting, they're bound to have something good soon. I swear.

The best move the Raiders made was gettin' rid of the Gruden character. Tampa got their superbowl, and Indianapolis got a dynasty.

Let's see,
#1 offense in the NFL--check
#1 for rushing yards by a running back--check
#1 defense in the red zone--check
#1 defense in QB sacks--check

Everything looks good on paper..however our defense is banged up, we have 2 rookies playing Linebacker, we're missing two pro-bowler defensive players (Ken Hamlin, Jamie Sharper), our team-leading interception leader is out until the end of the season (Dyson), our starting Wide Receiver Darryl Jackson is still out, yet we've managed to keep winning....I'm really not sure what to think of Seattle's play off chances. Everyone will crank it up a notch in the play offs, but can Seattles defense crank it up with a make-shift defense and two rookies? Time will tell.

I do know this much, Sat. Dec. 24th will be touted as "a possible Superbowl match up" when the Colts come to Seattle...I certainly hope Manning can communicate by hand signals alone with his players while executing the no-huddle offense because myself and 67,000 other fans are going to make it very loud at quest field that day.  I highly doubt that the center will hear Manning changing the play at the line of scrimmage...it is THAT loud at Quest field.

Steelers fan but I don't hold out much hope this year. To many injuries.

Live in Indiana so I gotta root for the Colts.

As long as they play indoors they have a chance. Their only downside is their secondary.

One more hard game and 2 easy (hopefully) and they will be ready!

Can you say 16-0?

Seahawks problem is they are in the weakest division in the NFL. That is a bunch of games in a year against really weak opponents. Defense is gonna be there big let down, that and coming up against a team that can keep the rushing below 100yrds.

Beat Dallas, beat NYG, beat Atlanta, SMOKED Philly, lost to the Skins by a missed FG...granted our division (which has two Superbowl winners from years past in it) is weak, but I really think that our offense is that good.

I couldnt agree more, if the Vikes go into the playoffs, i see a strong Super Bowl run, if they dont, then this year was just "another" rebuilding year.  The Vikings have improved 10 fold on defence!

Darren Sharper is ranked 3rd in the NFL for interceptsions.  He has 8 interceptions for 265 yards, 2 tds, and his longest is 92 yards td return.  Brian Williams and Antonio Winfield both have 4 interceptions apiece.  The d-line has a lot to do with how well the secondary is doing.  They pressure the QB and force him to throw the ball early and often, not on target.  DT Pat Williams in a beast in a half!  Why Buffalo let him go, is anyones guess!  His is by far, the best NT in the NFL!  Vikes have 4 recievers who may not be known outside Minnesota, but these guys are anything but selfish like Moss!  They give 110% every time they step onto the field.  I remember the 98' Vikes, "3 deep" Moss, Carter, and Williams (I think).  Well now, we have 4 deep, and they will be around for many more seasons!  If i had my way, the vikes would go all the way, but i dought it will happen!  Just my 2 cents!

Just a nit, but Denver did not beat Dallas.  Dallas lost to Denver.  A nit, but a valid one.  It was a good game though.

Although Dallas did show why it is not playoff material in that game.  If they manage to get to the playoffs they will lose the first round.

Their achilles heel is their O Line.
Years past Iknew they woud go only as far as their defence let them.
And usually their defece let them down with missed assignments and piss poor tackling technique

Now their defence is playing well but the O line  which was once as good as any in the league is playing very erratically with last week being the only game all season that they didint give up a sack.
but they also did it against the Rams which arent exactly a league powerhouse these days

Now if the O'line gells the way the defence seems to have and they cut way down on their mental errors if they get in they can make some noise.
But getting in is still a big "if"

The Steelers game is going to be a HUGE test for them

I'm actually a Hawks fan. I was in Seattle when Zorn was qb and went to several games at the Kingdome. I think Hasselbeck is great, but he put a big monkey on his back.

If Dallas can just get some consistancy in their offensive line I'd love to see them play the Seahawks for the NFC title.

Flozell Adams going out for the season cost them big time. Their depth chart is not deep enough to make up for the loss.

On a  different note, I wonder if using Terence Newman was just a trick or if they have any plans of going Deion with him.  He is pretty fast and he knows how to catch the ball.

Largent was of course excellent, and has a good political philisophy as well, but I think Zorn to Herrera was a 50% touchdown ratio.  (IIRC they tryed it again, with less sucess... IIRC incorrectly, the touchdown ratio was 100%)

What difference does skin color make to an athlete holding or breaking records?  Why is skin color even mentioned...why not I don't think a WR will break as many records as Largeant did.  Afterall, isn't the athletic achievement the noteworthy item?

I don't understand why people can't just enjoy the records for what they are.....an extraordinary achievement of athletic ability.

Simple. There just aren't as many white guys playing WR today as there was 25 years ago.  I figured that statement would draw out a few apologists...anyway, it has to do with the number of white guys playing today compared to yesteryear.  Its my opinion that blacks work harder in sports, during the offseason, during the season, then white guys do. We're from the couch potato legacy and the 64% of America being overweight proves it.

If that's so explain the race discrepancy for the position of Tight End.

I'm must over-simplify things then.....an athlete is an athlete to me.

Of course, I serve in a position of responsibility that has taught me that you look at the person (and it's not just skin color, since I interact on a global basis, across cultures).  Folks, and maybe you fall into this category (I don't know), who aren't in those type of responsible positions usually can't or won't grasp that simple concept.

Oh, and I'm sure you didn't accuse me of being an apologist did you.

Sure do, they just put him in the "Ring of Honor", during halftime a few weeks back.  Great coach, but sometimes he was too conservative and cost us some really big games.

Just wait Rip, Horton is gonna get pulled to the side soon, Grossman is healthy again and is definetly a much better QB, once the last game of the season and the playoffs start, Grossman will be QB

I think tactically that might be "Bad news" for the Bears. Pun intended.

Meanwhile, how about them Giants?  Tiki gets 220 yards against a defense (Chiefs) that have not allowed a 100 yard rushing game for 20 straight games... Whoa!

damnit, i was hoping indy would run the table just so they could bow out to NE in the postseason again. what a great story of failure that would be

dont look now, but the patriots are somewhat healthy and our secondary isn't giving up 3 miles of yardage anymore..  there are better teams out there for sure but when it comes to the postseason, i would take the pats over any team out there, even indy. i just see that stigma of not being able to win the 'big game' too much to overcome for peyton and crew.. for once the pressures on them and not on NE to succeed.

I was hung on that game too, but GB can be tough at home. GB has a pretty good defense too, better than Baltimore's D (GB is 4th ranked overall in the NFL), and Baltimores offense sucks eggs (27th overall).  GB's D should hold.

Quite an ass-whooping. Farve looks as though he should have retired 2 years ago.  GB defense was highly ranked going into that game, but again, stats are one thing, gametime is another.  I tend to use stats to judge, but one cannot measure the true emotion once its applied on the field.

Gentlemen's bet, double or nothing for next week?

My picks this week:

Tampa Bay over Atlanta
Cincinnati over Buffalo
Dallas over Carolina
Detroit over New Orleans
Jacksonville over Houston
Washington  over N.Y. Giants
Pittsburgh over Cleveland
San Diego over Kansas City
St. Louis over San Francisco
Tennessee over Miami
Philadelphia over Arizona

Minnesota over Baltimore
New England over N.Y. Jets

Sure...Lets continue.

Tampa Bay over Atlanta
Cincinnati over Buffalo
Carolina over Dallas
New Orleans over Detroit
Jacksonville over Houston
NY Giants over Redskins
Pittsburgh over Cleveland
Kansas City over San Diego
St. Louis over San Francisco
Tennessee over Miami
Philadelphia over Arizona
Colts over Seahawks
Denver over Oakland
Chicago over Green Bay
Baltimore over Minnesota
New England over N.Y. Jets

My toughest pick was the Giants/Skins game. Kansas City and San Diego is another tough one, too much is riding on the game for both of those teams, for even a a whiff of the post season. Especially since those teams play Denver and Cincy next week.

Colts Seahawks is another tough one. But the Colts will win, But there is a great chance they'll see each other in the Super Bowl.

Looking forward to great games this week! Can't wait for the playoffs!

Agreed, those you mention were tough for me too. The toughest was the Colts/Hawks, the two best records in the NFL going up against each other.   The Colts have nothing to play for since their perfect season is done. The Seahawks are still clawing for that #1 NFC seed, they're hungry. OTOH the Colts could just dissect our secondary like the Titans did...sooo, I went with "emotion" rather than "Betting man" effort on my pick. Go Hawks! Look for me, I'll be there in the stands Bald guy with a skull cap, Nikon and zoom lens. I should be easy to pick out of 67,000 screaming fanatics. ;)  Sure hope the Colts can hear Manning changing the play at the line of scrimmage. ;)

This is my first trip to quest field, but I'm told by my brother-in-law that its much louder than the older kingdom, which I had a hard time believing. It does hold more people, but it doesn't have that concrete echo that the old dome had...maybe that's why part of the roof on the old kingdom came down ;)

it mite be louder cause of more jump on the boat fans..hehe.the roof tile was crap in the kingdome,,it had to be replaced every year..but the building was quite stable.. it was designed to stand for 500 years or more..good for a rainy place like seattle..but atleast it dont have turf anymore..we lost so many good players to that turf..i remmeber when we lost chris warner to that turf...that stuff needed to go..lol

The biggest question this sunday:
Can Manning communicate without speaking to his offense? No one will be able to hear his signals unless they're done by hand or scripted. I garantee that much.  We lead the league in offsides penalties on visiting teams. :D

Hawks played starters first half, Shaun broke the NFL record for most TD's in a season and got the rushing title (sorry Tiki, please deposit another quarter next season)...after that we had deep bench in.  None of our secondary played the entire game. Deep bench. Of 22 starters only 11 played for the first half, and none the 2nd.

Well, I called my Dallas choke and fold 2 weeks late. If we just had something resembling an offensive line we coulda been a contenda.

We beat you this season at home. And when you beat us at home you won by one touchdown.

Your Bungals, while a novel effort this season, will be taught this week how to win a playoff game, Hopefully some of your fans will rush the field, We can beat them too.

Face it, your team is going to the playoffs for the first time, on two straight losses. You have a good team, I'll give you that. Give it a couple more seasons, you'll have some more Division Titles, and you might get a Championship team.

Some great matchups this weekend, but the Bungals will not advance.
