Yeah it's a Springfield.

Very, feels much lighter then a normal M1.

Laz I don't have any ammo yet, but I have ten days to get it!

Sucks we can only have ten round mags in the state though.

Is this the same reason you're not picking it up for a few days too? Mandatory wait on it?

Yep 10 day cool down period.

I already own a ton of guns, but I gues spree killers only do it with new guns so everyone has to wait?

Nice!

We have a 14-day wait for our purchase permits here.  But our 10-round limit is only for handgun mags and the AR.  I just learned yesterday that we can get full capacity AK, M1A, and Mini-14/30 magazines.  Can't get them for the AR because "they" know about the AR pistol.  Go figure  .

Cali still has its own assault weapons ban, so I suppose I am lucky I can even buy this.

The store had a brand new Carbon fiber Ar-15 from bushmaster.

Fixed mag.

It had 5 round mag riveted into the reciever. The mag well had no hole in the bottom.

You have to pop out the takedown pin to load it!

Well GTO, sorry to hear about your wierd legislation, but meanwhile enjoy your new toy.

By the way, I bought one of their new production Garands a couple years ago and called their customer service number with a question or two about it. They made me feel like, well, a valued customer. AFAIC, they get good grades for their products and service.

Just watch that thumb as they can really grab in when your loading your clip.

Thank God for Texas as you can go home the same day you buy your rifle.

Dan
They had one just like that as well and I was tempted, but since I already have an M1 with a 22 inch barrel I figured shorter would be fun.

I can strap this to the roll bar in the jeep too for  remote area trail runs.

That would be harder to do with a fullsize barrel.

Got 500 rounds of 7.62 nato coming from ammo man now too!

  south african 7.62x51 (.308) (http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/copy_of__308.html)

pakistani and wolf (http://www.ammunitionstore.com/pricelist_308.htm)

don't let it turn into a locker queen. shoot the hell outta it. ;

Thanks for the link Hang, thats 980 round deal is cheaper then the 500 I got, but the 500 rounds are new from this year.

I wish there was someplace withen an hour or two I could go and shoot in the country side.

I hear you can do it near Cash creek but have no idea where..

The next ten days are going to DRAAAAAAAAAG!

the 20 year old suff shot just as good as the new stuff. not a single mis-feed or misfire. outta the 30 year old commie stuff, 2 misfires in over 1500 rounds. that's .8c a round stuff. ;)

don't pay thru the nose for break-in or range ammo. match ammo is for matches. that's a battle rifle. don't baby it.. load up on battle amo and shoot the hell outta it. Anything less than 2000 rounds thru it without a misfeed and it ain't battle ready.. you or the rifle. ;)

Looks like a Scout Squad M1A.

Congrats on the rifle.

Hang gave good advice on the ammo.  South African is probably the best easily available surplus going right now and it is getting good reviews.

Do not, repeat, Do NOT shoot Indian ammo.  Very dangerous.  Identified by headstamps OFV and KF762.

Aim Surplus is a good place for cheap ammo.  polygunbags.com is another great place, Chris there is a great guy and will take care of you.  He wont rip you on the shipping like some places.

I have better than a few thousand rounds of some surplus stocked up now for mine.  Plenty of Aussie surp, Portugese, and Belgian.

You can get a great deal on some new surplus USGI 20 round mags if you dont live in a restricted liberal dominated state like Kalifornia at Armalites sight (http://www.armalite.com/sales/specials/excess/m14magSale.htm)    I suggest only buying USGI mags, or the Taiwan T57 mags.  The T57s  may need refinishing by sand blasting and parkerizing, but they shoot great.  You can get plenty of top mags for $25 so dont get sucked into more than that by fools charging $50.

Do your research on the handling, cleaning and shooting the rifle.  A military gas gun has certain concerns and requirements, but they are a blast to shoot and accurate as all get out.

A few sights I recommend to learn a lot about the M1A:

M-14 Forum (http://www.m-14forum.com/index.php?)

M1A Forum (http://battlerifles.ambackforum.com/viewforum.php?f=108&sid=e869bcf79b586eee2ccc92e3bef1d9f7)

Warrifles (http://www.warrifles.com/forums/index.php)

Rifle Company (http://rifle-company.com/phpbb/index.php?sid=fe8ae28988058d595f7540c6d8f3195e)

Fulton Armory (http://www.fulton-armory.com/)

Enjoy and give us a range report when you get to shoot it.

Scott Duff put out a good book on the M14 type rifle, and there is a couple good videos to be had on ebay for shooting, cleaning accurizing.

Warning Warning Danger Will Robinson!!!

On that ammunition store sight, the first ammo is Indian, headstamp OFV.  DO NOT BUY IT, If you did, return it or throw it in a deep lake.

A rule of thumb some guys go by, dont buy the ammo from a country you wouldnt drink the water from.

I personally wont shoot Wolf, I dont think it is dangerous, but most of it is Russian and not the quality I am looking for.   I avoid the Paki ammo too.

Here is some stuff some guys are buying now:

LOL Dago.. the sportsman's guide link... the ammo's sold out. Haven't seen any belgian yet.. or aussie or portugese at reasonable prices either. Availability of Mil Surp stuff runs in cycles.. the 'cycle' for portugese, belgian and aussie stuff was about a year ago.

Every time I order a 1000 rounds of ammo I get a coupla boxes of something else to run through the rifle. I'm learning that my rifles 'like' some ammo better than others.

I tried a coupla boxes of the Indian.. it went 'bang' ok, but it wasn't very accurate, grouping about 20% poorer than the south african. I can't fathom the 'dangerous' bit.. aside from some reports of bullets sweating out of poorly crimped cases (you do look for this when you load your mags, dontcha?) and associated jams from cruddy quality control it ain't gonna blow up any service rifle worthy of the name. While I'll agree the indian quality was atrocious, (i sure didn't buy a 1000 rounds based on the two boxes of test stuff i shot) I didn't figure it as 'dangerous'. Cripes the stuff ain't gonna go off sittin in the can, is it? ;)

My rifle likes the paki stuff.. can't tell it from the south african on the range. No quality control probs, boxes in very nice condition; tins well sealed. So much for the 'gun board forum' rumor mongers... but that ain't all; found the 'experts' wrong again on the wolf..

The two boxes of wolf i got with the last load shocked the hell outta me. I had doubts about the steel cases but the rifle didn't give a damn. What was the shocker was the accuracy.. awsome. Was like I was shooting match ammo. Surprised me so much i broke a round down and sure enough it's got a boattail slug like the Lake City sniper ammo... in fact aside from it being 10-12 grains lighter than the lake city sniper stuff the slug appears identical. Without doubt, for the price, it's the most accurate .308 ammo I've shot so far. I look forward to the big load gettin here cause nothin makes me smile more than dirt cheap accurate ammo; I don't give a damn where it got made.

moral.. just like anyplace else, the gun forum board 'experts' apparently seldom actually shoot much; else the BS being repeated and passed around about wolf is either outta date or doesn't reflect actual inventory in the pipeline TODAY. So when it comes to ammo, can't ever try enough different kinds and take what yah hear on the gunboards with a grain of salt. Buy and shoot whats available in todays mils-surp pipeline, then draw your own conclusions. If yah have a caddillac ammo budget, no place to shoot and are just packrating ammo or have indifferent range habits and shoot 3 mags of ammo at a clip and then go home then you'll HAVE to rely on other peoples advice on ammo. On the other hand if you have a voracious ammo appitite, then you'll check price carefuly first and proceed as I have.. look, shoot and see for yourself and draw your own conclusions based on actual performance in your rifle.

And Dago, just between you and me.. I wouldn't drink russian, south african, belgian, australian or portugese water any more than I'd willingly drink indian.. and the water quality nothing to do with their militarys ammunition quality control.

;)

Hang,

I bought 1000 rounds Belgian two months ago.  Came in steel ammo cans.  Havent had a chance to shoot it yet.

Bought an additional 1000 rds of Aussie on Bandoleers to add to my Aussie stock 3 months ago.

It's out there if you know where to look.   Got 1000 rounds Radway Green coming next.  :)

It hasnt all been gone a year.  Matter of fact, most of its still out there if you look carefully.

Running joke around my house with my wife is that she should stop buying stuff so I can buy more ammo.  Get it while you can, where you can.  She isnt amused when she sees another heavy box at the door, but when I go shooting, I run through about 200 rounds an outing, give or take.

I havent bought from Sportsmanguide, but the link showed that they had the 250 round packages in .30 cal ammo cans still available, and that is the current page.  Have you checked with them to see if they are sold out at that quantity?

Indian has had some serious issue, and it is not worth shooting.  It has failed in weapons, and often the cases right out of the box are dented and damaged.  But Hang, if you singularly have more knowledge than all the other shooters in the country who will not risk Indian, who have seen ruptured cases etc, then I am sure you will enjoy shooting it.  I dont need to risk low quality ammo in a rather spendy rifle.

Wolf ammo is normally lacquer coated ammo, and that lacquer coating can start to melt in a hot rifle.  Has been known to cause failure to extract, smells bad, and on occasion has lead to white smoking coming from the receiver.   Because I typically shoot a fair amount when I go out, I dont want to worry about it.  I have shot it and it shot fine, but again, why buy Wolf when I can get some excellant quality mil surp elsewhere?

And yes, I look at the rounds as I load magazines, but with the better quality milsurp,  a detailed inspection of every round isnt necessary.

Links? If it's 'out there'.. then where? secret stash? Love to try some.. but I ain't paying .25 a round for it in 1000 round lots. That sportsmans guide link shows outta stock.. scroll down and look yourself. it's YOUR link, buddy! LOL!

the wolf laquer melting is hype. Pure and simple. take a denaded case and hit it with a propane torch, heat it red hot. no sticky goo. I shoot that stuff in my sks's and have had that gun so hot I burnt the hell outta my fingers when i touched the rear sight leaf. never jammed, never misfed.

and again.. the bogus wolf rep is oft repeated by folks that never shot the stuff. i'm pleasnatly surprised by the quality of the samples, and I'm looking forward to blowing off a coupla thousand of the stuff. If it's as reliable as it is accurate, i'll probably stock up a big buncha that stuff cause it's very, very cheap for new ammo and obviously a cut above the surplus stuff in accuracy.

my opinion on ammo is changeable.. but by experience, not hype. I'm not trying to mislead anybody.. just reporting on what I've done, myself and how I felt about it. Again, the South African is fine, so's the pakistani. good value for the money. I din't like the indain. shoddy stuff. haven't seen any portugese, belgian or australian yet, and repeating; would like to try some. Links?

I have fired a lot of wolf ammo through handguns and have never seen any buildup of anything that could be called melted laquer.

Like hang.... I have gotten the guns so hot that you couldn't touch parts of em.

Oh, I have fired a thousand or so wolf 223's out of my mini 14 and it didn't seem to care... accuracy with wolf is allways pretty good in any gun I shoot it out of.

From reading your recomendations before lazs, I recently ordered a bunch of 9x18mm Mak, 9mm Luger and .30 M1 carbine rounds of Wolf ammo. Great price and no hassle from Sportsman for picture ID's or other stuff.

Hangtime, do have a recomendation on 7.62x54R surplus ammo? I'm almost out of my Albanian stock and looking to order some more ammo. Would like to try a different type.

Someone should ban firearms in the US so we can be safe from all of you gun owning nut jobs.

Hang,

Here is a good starting point for you.

Cheap Ammo Sights (http://rifle-company.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=431)

This sight is kept updated and has plenty of links.  I recommend staying away from florida gun works.

The Lake City is good stuff.

I'm about outta the 'albie' too. Liked it, wuz good stuff. Been shooting Polish lately. Groups about like the albie. the polish brass isn't as 'bright' as the albie, has a funky smell. Shoots good, no misfeeds or misfires. The cans look like they got dredged up from the bottom of a river, lol.. even worse than the czech spam cans. Gettin this commie martyr surplus ammo outta the cans is half the fun of shooting the damn gun. ;)

Stay away from the hungarian heavy ball, all of us (using nagant actions) are having extraction problems and misfires, about 1 in 30. Coupla split cases too. Doesn't group well either. Has a heluva whallop tho. Cranked the firing pin out a turn to try to get the stuff to pop, found I was smackin the pin right thru the primer, still no bang improvement.

Anyway, give the polish a try, we all like it, shoots mighty fine. yes indeedy! Aim Surplus is one of the places you gotta fax a 'em a copy of your license (once) BUT they've been real fast shipping once your in their system and the shipping rates are very good.. 17 bucks shipping for a 50lb load of ammo. they got polish for 33 bucks per 440 tin. not half shabby.

Hey Wulfie.. you want my gun.. come 'n get it yerself. Don't send some poor peace officer to do yer dirty work. YOU come get it. Muahahhahhahha!

Thanks Hang, I'll grab some Polish ASAP. I also enjoyed the 'Albie' rounds, not too pretty but they went pop everytime and good grouping also. Looks like a lot of Polish on the market right now, good to hear it's decent ammo. Good to know about AIM Surplus's shipping rate. That's a great price.
