when I fist played the demo I didnt like it much. Seemed like a fa meets eaw/janes with a pretty lame fm.
When it was 1st released I bought it (dunno why but I did). I played it long enough to get my stick scaled and a sge profile set up the way I like. The german campaign I thought was bs because I would have a harder time fighting off the other 109s to get kills then fightin the nme. Online play was just like eaw or janes or mcfs1/2. Some laggy hosts and idiots who cant click ready and when you finally get in game you lost half the guys on the way in.
I'm plum burned out on Ah for the most part and still have a sub to wb and wwiiol. I only play wb3 but its much the same as AH.
wwiiol just is very little fun to me.
been playing SH2 which is great fun and a little ghost recon. I'm burned out on ofp and MOH demo is crap.
I'll admit I own rtcw which is a kick just to fek things up.
I'm off till jan 3 and basically spending it chillin out lookin at all these cds and I decided to go ahead and suffer through some Il2 campaign.
By the 5th mission I was really diggin it. Theres just not enough vvs aircraft sent up at 1 time.
All in all it kicks ass. I downloaded a few user made missions and 1 ge campaign. Haven't flown a vvs plane yet (dont really care too) but so far I'm into it.
Online I moved over to hyperlobby which is some what better then ubi but same deal I spend the majority of the time waiting around to actually play (just like all box sims with online aspect)
Anyway I've changed my mind and despite some quirks I'm currently enjoying it.

Well, I have been a believer since beta and every minute I spend online with IL2 reinforces that belief.
How do I avoid the unpleasant wait in hyperlobby?
I take guys in with me, we go to a team room and fly.
Also, every online game you join is stored in net cache, just pair up the .mis and .properties files, rename them, move them to the coop folder and voila! missions you can host online yourself or use as single play by opening multiplay and launching your own server.
AI flies the rest and it ain't too shabby.
I have been reluctant to post about IL2 here due to the mindset of many of the natives but if you are a WWII flightsimmer, not strictly an online with 200 plus flightsimmer you must not miss this one.
The Box is just the beginning guys!
-
Well i bought it but never managed to get a single online game yet.
Always get left behind with a failed to start game engine or some such message.
I have come to the opinion that IL2 does not coexist happily online in a comp with a network card and ADSL modem.
1 Boxed game gathering dust may as well be in the trash for all the good it does me.
-
When you go to fly for the VVS, shooting down the bombers will be easier, but fighting cheato AI 109's in Mig3 gets to be pain in the bellybutton :)
-
Graphics and sound are the best I've seen. Scenery, sky, weather, plane 3d models, weapon effects, contrails, dust trails, etc. Attention to detail in this area is unequalled by any product I've seen.
FM and GM and DM are very good. There are flaws but the models are "good enough".
Also for me it has been very stable and free of major bugs. I've yet to see anything resembling a graphics glitch.
But offline gameplay is nothing special if you had Falcon 3.0 or Longbow 2.
And friendly and enemy AI range from weak to bizzare.
All the immersion I get from graphics and sound is lost when I see some of the things the AI do or what my plane does on autopilot which I have to use in order to stay with my AI squadron.
I'm going to try online. Maybe it's a better game when you minimize the effect of the AI?
-
"Longbow 2."
Now THERE's a game that really rocked but got screwed in the MP aspect.
Even with its limited MP, it was VERY fun to play. I still try to play online, but not many people to play with. When you get yourself a good front seater to man your guns and you can concentrate on flying.. oooh boy, its a pucker factor!

I have a single question about IL2. Does it support multiple controlers at the same time like AH does?
That is, if you have more than one joy you select the joy and the axis for each axis the game uses.
-
I do not know the answer Mandoble but if you base purchasing IL2 on inclusion or lack of that feature alone you will miss one hell of a show.
I totally agree that the offline aspect out of the box is a bit bland but when you go online and see some of the user created missions you will be amazed....well you might not be but I sure am.
IL2, with its powerful mission builder, will probably soon have a zillion missions for the offliners and the online mission file grows everytime you join a new mission on hyperlobby.
I am not so much burned out on AH as I am burned out on the Main but since Big Week I have not done any AH and have not really missed it.
I hope 1.09 rekindles my interest in high level bombing which is my reason for being in AH to begin with but until then IL2 mud moving is a totally....err, moving experience.

Yes . Brakes are only one side or the other on USB CH Pro's , they don't have a left and right one , unless I missed it .
I have Saitek x 36 , USB CH Pro's , works fine without the "Bob Church" driver .
Do I like it ? Don't know really , it sits getting dusty .
-
ĀFAIK, these drivers join the CH pedals with X36 as a single joy, not as two separate devices.
In my case I have USB X36 and CH Pro pedals atached to an old TM F16 joy (that is the second joy).
-
Yes, but it appears you cannot calibrate joysticks beyond J/S 1.
So if your pedals/throttle are on J/S 2 it doesn't let you calibrate or scale them.

Hey, Funked, coop missions with both human/AI elements are a blast. You get none of the maniacal furball behavior in the il2 dogfight arenas, you have a mission to complete, and when it's over, it's over - rtb.
I really like it w/o icons, because it makes you a lot more attentive to what's going on. Combat seems more 'real' too, because the environment has a way of lulling you into a sense of security, then bites you in the ass. With RW and a few squaddies against another group from a squad with some AI elements, it can be very intense and immersive. Last thing I like is that it's one mission, I fly my vector, try to hold try to the mission and my squaddies, and hope to make it home alive. And all this with these graphics and effects. It's great :)

Vulcan, so you can use several joys at the same time but calibrate only the first one inside the game, right?
-
I can't get it to see my TM TQS analog throttle in Windows XP. Others are having the same problem. Is there an .ini file to force it to recognize another joystick?
-
Dunno how to make it recoqnize that stick, but scaling of second controllers (that it CAN recognize) can be done manually in the conf.ini
If I want to adjust my pedals thats what I have to do.

Hi Sun, I know what you mean. I really enjoy the buff role too and the Main Arena with the Super Goons are kinda fizzling out my fun too.
I got IL-2 for Christmas and all my Squadmates are ga-ga with it. I'm wondering how well it will play on my P3 550/Voodoo 5500 or, if I should hang on until I breakdown and buy a new system.
-
Well I tried some multiplayer and I'm not impressed. It's not at all in the same league as AH/WB etc. Lots of waiting, lots of warps, lots of bugs. A lot of hosts use no icons which is simply unplayable. Planes are just dots at ranges where you can make out details in real life. Maybe Soviet pilots had bad vision due to malnutrition? :)
There are some big FM problems too. The more I play, the more significant errors I find.
However I still like flying the planes around. The air AI in single player is borderline unplayable, but blowing up stuff on the ground is a blast. The ground units actually have battles with each other, and you have to make an ID pass some times just to make sure you don't bomb or strafe the wrong side.
Eye and ear candy counts for a LOT, so I'm still playing it. If have a fast machine and you don't have a copy, you should buy it.

About stick calibrating.....
In game you can only calibrate your "flying" axis' ie. pitch, roll and yaw. This confused and pissed me off the first day until I realized that when you adjust the scaling, deadband and dampening ,from within the game, it makes the adjustments to what ever gear you have hooked up to your system and mapped to that function. I've tried this w/ 2 diferent joystick setups and it was the same for both.
With that said, I'm starting to get really disapointed in IL2. It was really good for the first 2 weeks I had it, but then the flaws start showing themselves. Can' hear when I'm getting shot and stuff like that. The worst part is the online play. This thing has been out for a month and already it's hacked. I've noticed it online several times, by getting 100 yrds on somebody's 6 and hit them with a 2 second burst of double 30mm wing gondola's and they simply pull a high yo-yo at 100 G's on my 6 and Im dead. All this with a 100 ping ;) I haven't hardly flown it since Christmas. Single player is ok and it looks neat, but AI sux compaired to any human oponent.
I'll put it up there with EAW for now, only the FM is way better than any boxed sim I've ever bought. So I guess you could say I too have changed my mind about IL2, only this time it's for the worse :( Great potential, but not even close to the fun I've had in AH or WB or WW2 OL.

Hi funkedup, I saw you in hyperlobby the other day, how long did you stay?
I ask because I only saw you in one mission and was wondering if you have given online coop a fair shot.
If you think you have, no problem but I would like you to join me and some others in coop missions we run with Roger Wilco and see if we can change your mind.
And please specify the FM probs, your statement amounts to a simple bash in my opinion.
LePaul, I played it on a P3 500 with 192MB memory with the beta and it ran well but not perfect.
I have a V770 TNT2 with 32MB in that computer and have heard the VooDoo cards may not work as well but I guess you will only know if you try it.
I will fly with you anytime if you want to check it out on your machine.
ICQ is 48730960 or email at enthor@sbcglobal.net , let me know if and/or when you are ready.
oops, almost forgot.
and Udie, the sound, or lack thereof issue is supposed to be addressed in the next update....I hope.
Also, there is no hit bubble, want to shoot an aileron off ya gotta hit it.
I never shoot outside .30 and miss a lot, a real lot.

I will continue to give online play a try. I'll definitely try to hook up with you guys on HL. All the toys and gadgets are there to have good missions, so I'm sure it can happen.
The FM thing was not a bash. It's probably got no more FM errors than AH or WB. But after all the hype from beta guys on various boards I figured the FM would be a big step forward from current offerings. And it's not that. Those beta guys clearly didn't know what the hell they were talking about. If you want examples I can send them privately, I don't want to turn this into an FM bash thread. :)

I should say that I have had good stable online play with it. Gadfly makes good coop missions hehe with out icons though :)
I'll go hang out in HL tonight....
-
Hey guys,
I haven't been able to play it online yet, due to my network card, but I have to agree with Leonid about flying without icons. I set up a quick combat mission the other night (4 Fw-190s vs 4 P-39s, one of which I was in :) -) and it was awesome! A couple of times I pulled onto aplanes six, then noticed it was a friendly. It really keeps you on your toes.
Also, using the instructions by Uberdemon to fly the AI planes, the the water plane has very realistic hydro-dynamic effects. It follows the various steps in the hulls during landing (i.e. as speed changes). Also, the I-153 M52 is an awesome stunt plane! I hope someone makes a cockpit for it soon. It performs great tail slides. It would also be cool if someone added a cockpit for the Hs-129 so we could play 'IL-2' from the other side (As opposed to the Fw-190/Me-109 rides).

Coop is a blast but You have to know who You fly with. There are some people that make excellent missions.I/JG3_Crunch for example is a master. You join a mission he host,You`re guarantied to have fun.Crop_Duster is another one who`s missions rock.
Btw check this out,I`ve never seen a tread like this (http://forums.ubi.com/messages/message_view-topic.asp?name=us_il2sturmovik_gd&id=zzejf)

Try this: after connecting to the internet, and before running IL2, run il2setup.exe and on the Network tab make sure the proper IP address (ie the one for the internet, not for your local NIC LAN) is selected. Exit il2setup.exe and run IL2. Some people (including me) have found this fixes the problem of multiplayer with an installed NIC. Its worth a try.

Yes mando it does (got my copy yesterday) and to be honnest it's a pain in the neck...
AM using 2 CH fighterstick, 1 USB, the other attached to Analog pedals... there's no way to select WHAT joystick it will use properly. (yes yes yes... you CAN set the axis and buttons, but you can't control damping etc... if the joystick you're using is not Joystick #1).
Also, try to remap the View keys.... took me over 30 minutes (try to go "Oblique" with that little hat without hitting left/right or up/down...grrrrrr)
Haven't been far yet, in the campaign (playing the LW one, of course) and the only two planes I saw only flew straight (150-300 yds) in front of me, I kept shooting (1 min per plane) and they went down without ever doing an evasive...
WIll see later tonight what gives... but am not too impressed so far.
