Title: Not WWII, But Some Interesting New Big F-22 Pics
Post by: ShortyDoowap on December 22, 2005, 09:33:30 PM
Not sure if anyone here likes jets, but I got a disk with F-22 pics during a PR meeting I attended at Langley AFB a few weeks ago as a part of my company's Military Affairs Committee.  These are pics of the first F-22 delivered to Langley AFB, and AFAIK, they haven't been posted on the net before:

That plane has a really peculiar finish, very unlike the F-15.  The F-22's finish has some depth to it, the F-15's is matte.   The finish on the F-22 sort of changes color depending on how you're looking at it.

I always thought the F-15 looked fast, even when sitting on the ground. It just looked like 100% raw power ready to spring to life. Now I look at it in flight next to the F-22, and it looks like it has to work hard just to stay in the air. The F-22 looks like it is just slipping through the air. Sleek and smooth. I need to get up to Langley and check them out. I only live 20 miles form the place. I'm sure they will do a flight demo this year at the open house and air show. I will be there this year for sure.

Awsome pics....thanks for posting them.

From Globalsecurity.org

Quote

The F-22's close-range weapon is the M61A2 20mm cannon and its associated components. The M61 is a proven gun, having been the U. S. military's close-in weapon of choice dating back to the 1950s. The F-104, F-105, later models of the F-106, F-111, F-4, B-58, all used the M61, as does the Air Force's current F-15 Eagle and F-16 Fighting Falcon, and the Navy's F-14 Tomcat and F/A-18 Hornet. The system is integrally mounted in the aircraft and located on the right side of the aircraft between the wing (top side) and fuselage. It is a fixed-forward firing mount. A gun door, located in the wing root area, is hydraulically controlled to open when firing the gun, which allows the rounds and blast pressure to clear the muzzle. A 480-round closed loop ammunition feed and storage subsystem is housed integrally under the right wing root/fuselage for easy ammo upload and download of empty casings. The gun system consists of the M61A2 gun, the Linear Linkless Ammunition Handling System (LLAHS), the hydraulic drive system, and the gun door/gun port and gas purge system.

B2 is the Most expensive airplane in US inventory....1 or two billion a pop and I think there has only been 19-23 ever built....

and yes...the YF-23 looks like an alien fighter haha...it almost looks like those "jets" from the movie "stealth" which by the way is the worst movie ever made

The YF23 outperformed the F22 in all categories.  It even cost less.

But now we have the F22.

But now we have the F22.

The reason they chose the F-22 was it cost about 1/4 that of the YF-23.
Just looking at it, it looks like the YF-23 would have a nasty tendancy to flat spin (but hey, the B-2 flies)

Now's time we call REMATCH against all the nations that beat our F-15s in mock dogfights

I imagine that is the "RAM" material the aircraft is covered with.

The F-22 was an easier design to build than the YF-23 - I imagine that also had a big factor in the F-22 getting the nod over the "Grey Ghost."

Was a rumor there at one time the YF-23 would be turned into a carrier plane for the Navy - wish they would have instead of going with the F-18 "Super Turkey."   :cry  I doubt Congress would have gone for building both the F-22 for the USAF and the F-23 for the Navy. The F-22 barely made it into production. Now that the Soviet Union isn't a threat anymore you can forget ever seeing it.

Last I read which was awhile back the the navy is planning on putting the X-35 into production.  Its a single engine vertical take off plane and looks similar to the f-22 but has a giant engine in the back.

The X-35 is a "Strike/Fighter" along the lines of the F/A-18 Hornet and while it is a multimission aircraft it doesn't have the perfomance of the F-22 or the would be YF-23.

BTY, the USN & RAF versions of the X-35 won't be a VTOL like your pic but a standard take-off version. The USMC and the Royal Navy will be getting the VTOL versions though.

Should be interesting to see what they will do in service.

:aok

The YF22 was one fat ugly pig, no doubt. But the F22 is a much different and much better looking plane.

Simple modifications such as avionics, a seat that reclines at hi Gs, and improved g-suit will be enough for the F-15 to keep the title belt *The Undefeated Fighter*

Back when I was in Nellis in Oct of '04 I looked inside an F-15 cockpit it looked like some bad handheld Video game from the early 1980's I remember one of my extended family member had back when I was a child.

Looking at the Cockpit of an F-22 from what I've seen it's like owning a new AMD rig :D
