As some of you may know, I have a computer installed in my car. One of the things I've done with it is install a little camera on the dash that takes a picture every 4 seconds and creates a time lapse movie of every drive I make.
My drive from Seattle to Portland was smooth sailing until just before the 205 when the temperature dropped to freezing and it started snowing. Cars were sliding off the road around me, and I managed to limp to my sisters house to wait an hour before continuing south to Eugene.
Here's the clip of Seattle to just north of the Oregon border in two and a half minutes, followed by a period of slow, careful ice driving for your entertainment.

BTW, I have a time lapse movie of every drive I take in my Buick Regal, the software handles it all automatically. Ain't technology great?
-
Well cool....but what the heck did you do to the sun!
-
I used a nucleonic inhibitor to allow the CCD to function as a neutrino detector as well as a standard camera. That, coupled with a magnetically coupled Zoehn capacitor also provided a two order improvement in controlling blah blah treknology blah blah.
-
Sweet, how's that set up? Have a write-up on your web site?
-
looks like your sister's my neighbor (only a couple miles away anyway)
-
Actually... I don't, but should.
Here's the setup, it's been in place over a year:
7" LCD touchscreen mounted on dashboard.
Epia Mini-ITX M10000 1ghz computer w/ 512 RAM
20gig system drive (notebook) for software/OS)
250gig media drive with about 28,000 songs
OBD-II interface to connect with engine computer
802.11g card
Shuttlexpress tactile interface pad so I can control the system without looking
Webcam (as mentioned earlier)
Opus DC-DC power supply (no inverters, no A/C)
GPS
Bluetooth adapter
It's tied into my stereo too, of course. :D
-
See kids, this is what happens when you don't get laid!
-
Are you talking to Chairboy's kids? ;)
-
LOL...
It's probably a US beta test of a system the government intends to install on every vehicle in the US sooner or later.
To fight the war on terror, of course.
Nothing like the British system though....lol (http://www.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=167268) The US citizens are convinced it's "cool" and post about it on the web and stuff. Pretty good marketing.

That was cool...no sound :(

Wait a mintue...if this movie was all 1 clip. then that means that u drove for about 16 minutes. heres my math.
Since you said it takes a snapshot every 4 secs that means
60secs/4=15secs... Means for every 15 seconds in real time=1 minute in movie time
15secsx4=......1 minute in real time=4 minutes in movie time
movie length is 4 minutes
4 minutes in movie time x4 minutes of film=16 minutes of driving
In movie however it looks like longer!?!?
???? is my math correct?
-
black hole sun, wooont ya come, n wash awaaay the raaainnn! :)

The playback is not at 1 frame per 4 seconds, or "real time". That's what is throwing you off.
-
lol not to many cars passing you leadfoot. why do people always bunch up in bad weather then hit the brakes? 7 inch lcd on the dash. bet odot would love that.
-
no he said it takes frame every 4 secs

He recorded 1 frame every 4 seconds. You are not playing it back/viewing it at 1 frame per 4 seconds, you are viewing it much faster.
-
Yeah, the camera takes a picture every 4 seconds. The video, however, is playing at 15fps.
15 fps * 229 seconds = 3435 frames * 4 seconds = 13740 seconds / 60 seconds = 229 minutes / 60 minutes = 3.82 hours
-
thats more like it

Chairboy = Gyro Gearloose
-
I recommend doing the same for newborn kids, if anyone is expecting one (or six).
-
Not that I want to curse you, but it would be interesting if you got into an accident that was your fault. Can they claim the video as evidence?

Only if they know about it.
:D

I noticed he was in the car pool lane alot, never saw anyone else get outta the car!
-
Heh, one of my sons was in the back. It's funny, on the drive UP to seattle, I had both kids, but I was so used to driving alone that, when the traffic got backed up, I sat just next to the carpool lane (looking at it enviously) for about 15 minutes before remembering that "Hey, I qualify for this!".

I'd have no problem with carpool lanes within a city... But carpool lanes on freeways between cities are ridiculous.
-
Why?

Actually... it's every vehicle sold in the USA since 1996 that has OBD-II. But you can't just rub a zombie car statue on your computer to make them talk to each other, you need an interface, and that's what I have. It works out the voltages, signals, and provides a serial interface.

For the same reason people climb Mt. Everest, except with less dying and freezing.
-
That's why Mora has a problem with carpool lanes on freeways? I think maybe we're not talking about the same thing. :)

Yes my friend all that came with the vehicle,it need not to be installed.
-
ATA: You are operating under a really big misconception.
I have a full computer, running Windows XP with a music/video/navigation/network scanner etc etc etc running, and that computer also hooks into the OBD-II port on my car and also logs/analyzes the output of the computer that's built into the car in the factory.
Does that make sense now? I think you are very confused, but it's ok, it's Christmas.

How did you make the OBD-II interface?
-
chairboy, you are like some uber nerd or something.
you get up to some crazy stuff... i love it! :aok
-
Mora: Didn't make this one, got it at obddiagnostics.com. It's saved me a bundle already when a crooked emissions tester told me that my car failed because the 'Check Engine' light came on at one point. The computer said differently. He really didn't expect me to be able to pull that stuff up.
-
Thanks, I hadn't realized that you can buy them online. Maybe I'll get one.
-
I noticed that Chairboy does a lot of aggresive driving. Lots of tailgating and pushing other cars to move over to the next lane. Not a very road friendly driver I would say.
-
Everything looks aggressive at 100x speed. :D The 'tail gating' you saw near the end was at between 2-4 mph.
-
very very cool. you do all the cool things i wish i had time to play with chairboy
and yea mora, every car has obdII, but the cables to connect are not free. hell, a simple reader runs you like 100 bucks at autozone.. got one to troubleshoot a check engine light on my saturn and found it was a coil pack misfiring once in a great number of cycles
-
A couple things, Autozone will give you a free reading if your check engine light comes on.
ATA was thinking that just because your car has a diagnostic computer, that automatically means you can just magically "plug it in" to your computer without an interface. But he knows better now, and all is well.

That's a very cool video. Where was the carpool lane at? I know they're up in Seattle, but I didn't know there were any this side of Tacoma anymore. I did recognize the Tuttle river bridge which made me check your location.
I did like the semi at about 3:10 that made 3 lane changes as he wove his way through traffic, on the ice.

-
Last time I was up there, the carpool lanes ended right at about Federal Way.
-
There were some carpool lanes on the 405 in the beginning I think, but can't remember where else. The carpool lanes incident I referred to was on the way up to Seattle, and was between downtown portland and Jentzen Beach.
Nuke, you get coal in your stocking this year? Chin up, 2006 is another chance to get on the good list. That Red Ryder carbine-action 200 shot range model BB rife with a compass in the stock is as good as yours if you put your mind to it!
-
By the looks of the vid (SOB)... the carpool lanes were in Oregon. I didn't know we still had them. I guess we do. Shows you how much I drive I-5 between 205 and vancouver.

i saw tailgating in the sunny part of the video.
passing on the right
weaving lane to lane
speeding (you were passing every car on the road it seemed except the few you followed for a few miles)
general aggressive, mean driving, you should be ashamed.
:p
:rofl
-
Heh, I'll take it under advisement. :D
-
I saw nothing wrong with his driving. as far as passing people on the right- he wouldn't have to if they'd get their slow bellybutton into the right lane.
lead, follow, or just get out of the way.
-
In Oregon and Washington, drivers are told to use the left lane only for passing. If they were following that guideline, I'd hardly be able to pass them on the right, eh?

Shows how observant I am...I still can't see the carpool lanes in the vid around Portland.

Because if they exist on the 205, they're covered with ice and snow in the vid.
