With five games to go, Seattle needs two victories to tie the 1998 New York Yankees (114-48) and four to match the major league mark set by the 1906 Chicago Cubs (116-36).

One is doable.. the other would be a miracle.
Lou seems to be sticking to a planned rotation of players. I think this record is not important enough for him to deviate from it.
My fingers are definately crossed.

If they do match the Cubs mark, will there be an asterix much like when Maris eclipsed the Babe? '06 Cubs played 154 games, '01 Mariners will play 162. Personally, no asterix is necessary. This years Mariners can't beat the '06 Cubs winning pct, and that IMO takes care of the 154 vs 162 game seasons.
edit only 152 games for the Cubs? I thought they were playing 154 back then. hmm...

Hehehe.. either way... the record has stood for nearly 100 years. There seems to be quite a few 90+ year records falling this year. I only hope there's room for one more.

If they do it, great, if not, it's ok. Need to keep everyone healthy and get ready for the playoffs. Would be considered a waste of a season if they didn't make it to the World Series.
I'm just hoping for the A's to beat the Yanks. I want to see Seattle/Oakland in the ALCS.
Oh my!!! Seattle has 4 games remaining, with the Rangers coming in. That should be 4 straight right there, and how's that for irony! A-Rod will be on the field as the Mariners possible tie or break the single season record for wins. Of course, he'll be in the wrong uniform! Guess money is more important to Pay-Rod than winning! (Just imagine if he had signed with Seattle again. They might not have even lost 30 games all year adding A-Rod's production into the equation!!)

Texas is not a given, we've got "Deep Bench" playing...Lou's resting alot of starters for the play-offs.

Texas still doesn't have a pitching staff. 5.68 team ERA. They lead the AL in hits and walks surrendered. I'd take your reserves against their starting pitching staff any day. :)

SEATTLE HAS DONE VERY WELL THIS YEAR, BUT I WOULD BE WORRIED ABOUT THE A'S IF THEY HAVENT TIRED THEM SELVS OUT GETTING TO WHERE THEY ARE NOW THEY MIGHT BE A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH.
I JUST HOPE THE BRAVES GET HOT WITH THE BATS SOON...

Yes maam! Though I won't be there to personally deliver it :(
What kind was it again?

Hey Nifty...I can't help it....I have pinstripe Yankee blood running through my veins. It's in the DNA. YANKEES ROCK!!!
Rip,
I hope that the mourning period you had to undergo last year when the Yankees spanked the Mariners was as painless as possible. :D
Absolute vodka is fine or I wouldn't mind a nice, dry Chardonnay either. Are we wagering again this year????
Sorry you can't be here in person :( . Maybe next year. I'll raise a glass to you when I'm in the Sports Bar watching the game next weekend. :)

Yankee.. you may want to wait to see if the Yankees even get the chance to meet Seattle in the finals before making any bets on them ;)
Oakland is no push-over.
Personally... I'm visualizing an all west-coast AL Finals.

BTW.. back to the original post...
Last night was win 114. A 16-1 thumping of the hapless Rangers. The only Ranger run was a solo HR by A.Rod.
The game was made special when Jay Buhner hit a 420 foot shot to right center field. Its great to see him finally trotting around the basis again.

116 with 1 to go :D

The "Ram" Bar and Grill was CRAZY last night and we watched the final out, you could not have scripted a more deserving ending, Rodrigez up to back, 2 outs, 1-0 lead...fans two for 0-2, then foul tip into Dan Wilsons (catcher) glove for the 116 win. Go Mariners!
Thks Yankee!
-
well, 116 was -all- they could do... <S!> to the M's!
I'm thinking D'Backs and M's in a very, VERY close series. I don't even think I want to pick a winner... but... Seattle in the full 7 games. Think it's gonna be loud when Randy pitches in Seattle? ;)
I don't expect much in the post season for my team, but... You can't dismiss 10 straight division titles!!! Feels damned good after the 5 straight dead last seasons ('86-'90). Oh, and for anyone that wants to say something about me being a Braves fan and not a Marlins or Devil Rays fan. :p Atlanta is a closer drive than either Tampa or Miami (hell, Houston is a closer drive than Miami!). Besides, I went to my first Braves game 10+ years before the Marlins even existed. :D

LET'S-GO
OAK-LAND!!!
-
Oakland is the only team to give the Mariners a run for their money during regular season (play-offs are different story, different levl)...at Seattle 10 wins and Oakland 9 wins in the 19 times we met, Oakland was the only team to win a series at home to the Road-bound M's. One series at home lost (Toronto, early in the year) and Oakland a couple weeks ago. Oakland scares me, but they have to get past the Spankie's first.
Personally, I still believe that the Yanks have the most talent in the league, but who the best team is the one who plays consistant ball, and utilizes the talent to the best of their abilities.
