What the heck is it and why is it on my computer? It keeps telling me I have a "dangerous malware infection". I keep Xin out of it but it keeps coming back. I dont remember installing it and even after uninstall it keeps popping up.
-
Sounds like you got yourself a good old fashioned infection to me. Better get it fixed before your joystick starts dripping.
-
Its a trojan virus.
-
Wow, apparently this is getting pretty big. Googled it and here's the synopsis
This is not a virus or a trojan. It is detected as a "potentially unwanted program". This is an anti-spyware application claiming to remove unwanted malicious spyware programs. In an attempt to get you to purchase the full version of the product, it may be installed by a Trojan (see Spyaxe ) which will display fake warnings (some appearing to be Microsoft Security Center or Windows Update warnings) which may lead you to believe that your computer is infected with malicious spyware programs. In order to clean or delete any files labeled as “malicious spyware”, you must first enter a valid serial number to activate the full version or click on the “Buy Online” button and purchase the full version.
Basically the $!@$@ have created a program that falsely warns of an impending computer crash due to spyware. Those gullible enough click on the "fix" and end up buying the full version. How the hell is this legal?!?!
They've even gone so far as to get a sister company on the first hit of Google. The "fix" apparently screws up your computer even more.
I only fixed it by going to a system restore point that this piece of @!$% wasn't infecting my comp.

It is installed by a trojan as it said above but the trojan remains and you will have to remove it to stop getting that spyware ads.

If you're really really worried about this stuff invest in one of these:
I dunno what US retail is, but the ones I sell go for ~NZ$695 RRP, thats less than US$500 and NZ is located on the ass-end of the planet.
That price will get you: Gateway Antivirus (shouldn't replace desktop AV tho); Antispyware; and Intrusion Prevention. Also included is Content Filtering (basic version, backends into Blue Coat's CFS system), and ViewPoint reporting (needs a computer thats on 24/7 to collate data tho).
So for less than US$500 (probably a lot less) you can:
- protect 10 PC's (license limit)
- stop 99.99% of virus's at the gateway
- stop spyware even getting near your network
- stop attacks/worms hitting your network
- enable content filtering if you have kids (I use it for ad blocking)
- use IPS to stop apps like kazza, MSN, etc if you're not comfortable with your kids using them
- log whats going on and get pretty reports on attacks blocked, virsus's blocked, etc etc plus what websites are being visited or blocked the most
- get automatic updates on all the above
I know this sounds like a sales pitch, it is the baby product of what I sell, but it rocks as a security solution. Hell I even brought one for my old man so he doesn't have to worry so much about rubbish on the net. So please execuse the pitch, I doubt I'll sell you any from NZ,but I did want to share whats available if you are a concerned net user ;)
p.s. its a Sonicwall TZ150 Comprehensive Security Bundle, AKA Sonicwall TotalSecure 10.

I just got ths POS, and after three hours still cant get rid of it.
I will give a thousand dollars to the person that can bring me the creator of this.
Just so I can punch him/her dead square in the face.
have a nice day
-
Exactly how I was feeling doobs. The only cure I can see right now, is to go into Windows XP system restore(please tell me you have XP) and go to a point where the virus didn't exist. It seems to have worked for me the only thing now, is Norton won't stay on Auto-Protect. I'll click on "Enable Auto-Protect" and it just declicks itself a few seconds later.
I can usually forgive people pretty easy, but the creators of this and things like it can go suck on a electrical cord, while greased up with vasoline standing in a grille, while watching The View. %!@

Ug Spy-Axe....I had fits trying to get rid of it(it reinstalls the moment you remove it right?)...I had someone email me on how to remove it and it fixed it..There is a Spy-Axe removal fix somewhere on the web.
and for gods sake DO NOT purchase WinVirus2005(one of the popups SpyAxe keeps shoving in yer face)...it's a fake antivirus program that will install it's own spyware on yer PC....$$$
Yep..surfihn pron getting dangerous now eh?..:)

Have you tried spybot or adaware? I have both and regularly screen my PC.

all you need is some pron friendly platform :]

lavasoft adware and a redigestry cleaner took care of it for me, the spyaxe site has a fix listed on its site but I would not trust these **** heads, it may take a 2 or 3 scans to clear it but it should fix it. good luck:aok :aok
-
There is a file the registry cleaner will miss for spyaxe...there is a specific file(or 2) u have to search and remove.
-
The thing to remember here is, Spy Axe is just one example of what can be done with this bug, until the Devil Billgatesebub puts out a patch to cover it. Right now its just trojans and little spyware apps.
If somebody writes one of those nasty worm viruses based on this type of exploit it could get ugly real quick.

Competition creates better products, but seeming windows has no real competition, we are stuck with the pos
If microsoft were a phone company, they would have been broken up years ago

Vulcan,
Everytime anyone clicks on this thread that sonicwall company tries to, or does put a cookie on their computer.
-
Tried to edit it to point to a locally hosted file but: " vBulletin Message
The administrator has specified that you can only edit messages for 120 minutes after you have posted. This limit has expired, so you must contact the administrator to make alterations on your message. "
So its cookie... if you had a Sonicwall firewall it could've blocked it for you ;)

If you already have the cookie, it won't show up on the prompt again. I have my system set to prompt if a cookie is being sent. I routinely refuse all of them including the temp cookies except for a couple sites, AH being one of them. I have had much fewer problems with my system since I started doing this.

Nup, first I turned on cookie blocking at the gateway, only cookie it got was from htc, second I telnet'd in to see what was being sent, all the site does is send a gif through, no attempt is made to send a cookie. Is your browser trying to preload stuff?

LOL uh huh. Well my Mac people (here) have finally given up and are gonna do the Sonicwall training. I think they've had a couple of sites get hammered lately.

Now why would my browser try to "preload" something. One more time. I have my system set to PROMPT if a site tries to load a cookie. If you have all cookies blocked you won't see any attempt since you set your system to block them automatically.
-
I dunno dude, by when I try a telnet'd connection to that webserver asking for the GIF all I get is this:
GET http://www.sonicwall.com/products/images/pic_TZ150.gif
GIF89a] ....gif garbage deleted...
No cookie, this isn't even using a browser so ummm yeah :) can't get much simpler than that can it now?

My computer was recently infected with SpyAxe. I got rid of that, and a bunch of other stuff by using this spyware removal regimen at MajorGeek's:
Spyware Removal (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407)
It involves going into safe mode and doing multiple scans with various antispyware and antivirus programs provided for free, (Ad-Aware SE, CCleaner, Microsoft® Windows AntiSpyware, Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, SpyBot - Search & Destroy, Hijack This!,CWShredder, Kill2me, BitDefender and Panda Active Scan) then disabling system restore, rebooting and enabling system restore and creating a fresh clean restore point that will not be harboring infectious matierial.
What was surprizing to me is that even though my freshly updated ad aware, updated spybot and updated Norton's antivirus gave me a clean bill of health, an additional 47 infections were discovered and eliminated by following this procedure.
I'm using sticking with Firefox and Thunderbird.... IE only when absolutely necessary.
-
Vulcan, there is a cookie coming from sonicwall. You might have to open the images directory at their site to see it, if you are using telnet.
