On the first week of their maiden cruise they take a slug from one planet and place it on another planet, no doubt causing ecological disaster!
No wonder everyone ended up fighting them over the next few centuries...

I think everyone just resents the humans and their lack of forehead adornment. ;)
-
LOL! The second they put that slug on the different planet I turned to my wife and said "Great... they most likely just killed the entire eco-system on that planet".
Hehehehe... its almost embarassing to be so sci-fi conditioned.

I cant believe they had that in the script..
Was it written by a soap writer?
-
What can you expect from a show with that opening sequence starring that guy from Quantum Leap?
The first Star Trek failure?
Maybe loosing that slug on the planet is what led to the prime directive concerning messing around with development on other planets.
Doing plastic surgery on Seven of Nine to make her Vulcan is the only good thing so far.

That's not 7of9 is it? Thought she was off doing "Boston Public" now.

No thats not Jeri Ryan. Her name is Jolene Blalock, a hottie for sure though.
I like the series so far but I agree the slug thing was stupid but then so is the whole hoshie character "shes the translater" Thats going to be one of the most important characters, why put such a whiney bellybutton hypochondriac as that role. Other than her whom i find annoying I like the other characters, exp Scott Bakula, hes more reminiscent of Kirk, kick bellybutton take names later.
One of the biggest perks of this series is no hollodeck. The hollodeck was responsible for more stupid boreing episodes than I care to count.
-
And you have to admit its funny watching them try to use their weapons in their infancy :D
I enjoy the show and think it has more room for growth than virtually any other Star Trek so far. I also like Scott in the lead role... think he's doing a great job.

I know it ain't Jeri Ryan, just the "type"

Star Trek?
Oh dear... I just don't get the whole 'cult' thing about it. I can watch an episode of the Next Generation no problem, but the original series either makes me laugh or change the channel. As for the others, I'm left with a feeling of 'What's the point?'. Different cast everytime (or not as the case may be), but little else changes.
Is this new one any different to the others?
-
Yea its a lot different. All the technology is in its infancy. The ship is half as fast weapons are so far limited to torpedos that almost look like rocket powered. Havent heard an order for shields to go up yet :) Communication is funny at times, no instant translation to english, learning languages as they go. All of this translates to a different way of doing things, and makes for different story lines and IMO more interesting episodes
I dont consider myself a trekie but i have followed all the series, and I havent enjoyed an episode of ST so much since the last 2 seasons of DS9. This has the makings of being the best of the series yet.
-
I've enjoyed it for the most part. Agree with the slug/Hoshi comments, wtf was that all about? I like the doctor though... "And those two seem like they're ready to mate. Do you think they'll let me watch?"
-
Well, as someone who has seen every ST episode as they were originally aired at the original times, I have to say, I like this one.
One thing I have noticed is how fast the cast has gelled. Most of the recent ST series took at least one seaon for the cast to act like they really are a team. This group seems to have gotten it together pretty fast.
I do wish Rick Berman would get over all his "temporal" fantasies though.
And, although the Vulcan is a babe, I really found the "rub some gel on me baby" scene a bit over the top for a ST series.
And what's with the startup music???? ST has always had classy music to kick it off. I really dislike what they did to the startup.
I really am enjoying the pre-prime directive stuff though. It will add a lot to the story line.
The doctor is good comedy relief. I like Bakula's dog. Nice addition. The other crew members definately draw from the other series characters, except for Hoshi.
Seems Star Fleet training is not up to what we have been used to seeing. She is anything but a ST/SF character. I find her somewhat refreshing as a character like hers has never been in any other ST series/movie.
As far as the timeline goes, they seem to have thought it out pretty well and given it a lot to work with as they evolve the SF rules and regulations.
Notice, the captain putting himself into dangerous situations, and no one having much to say about it. They explicitly brought up this point in the second episode via the Vulcan.
The prime directive is definately not in effect or the slug would have been returned to its home world.
The rules of first contact are not established yet as they boldly barge into anyone's world without a whole lot of thought.
Technically, they have a very long way to go to get to the original ST.
Quite a bit of room for a whole lot of stories. Something the series needed. Instead of building from the past, they can start anew and create and define the story line as time passes.
Overall, it has potential. The second episode was better than the opening one, imho.

I missed the opening episode :( but I did catch the 2nd show. I liked it for the most part. It looks a lot better than the first season of TNG. I love how they don't have phasers, they have EM-guns. I assume by the model numbers that they are electro magnetic devices.
The main thing that I noticed in last week's show was that durring the climax the away team had to board the shuttle and dock with the enterprise to save there arses. I kept thinking "why don't they just beam over" then after a couple of minutes I snapped, "oh yeah they haven't been invented yet" :D I love that aspect of the series already...
-
Udie.. they have transporters. They just don't trust them yet. The Captain was saved in episode 1 by a timely transport... because there was no alternative. It is the fist time the show has shown it being used for a person.

I guess Hoshi was too caught up in all the exolinguistic classes to pay attention in exoecology. hehe. Actually, upsetting the ecosystem wasn't what I thought about at first when they let the slug go. I was thinking "poor slug, there isn't another one of its species within light years. Hope it's not a sexually reproducing slug!" I bet the slug mutates into the first Tribble. Then the Klingons will set foot on the planet... ;)

Someone wanna post some pics of the Enterprise and new crew? Haven't seen much about it... (too busy on AH! :) )

I guess what I like about this new series (asides the exceptional nipple shots on the season opener...no wonder their ears are always errect!) is the extra effort made to show this is a prequel.
Remeber when Star Wars: The Phantom Menace came out and every ship, weapon, etc all seem more advanced than the sequels? I think Star Trek is learning from that.
The ship is more crude, and follows the examples of modern ships...cramped, no spacious 10-Forward and stuff like that. No fancy touch pads everywhere, levers and dials all over the place. Looks more like a submarine, you know?
And when in action, lots of "Can't" 's or "Out of Range". Scan that vessel, can't, out of range, same with weapons, etc. Its nice to see how infantile that vessel is compared to what we saw in 7 years of Voyager (which was an extraordinary series IMHO).
I'm not a huge Scott Bakula fan, I would have preferred an unknown, since whenever I see him, I'm thinking 'Quantaum Leap' and not trek.
Voyager was a remarkable series. TNG was very good, but some of the Roddenberry episodes were a bore. If you watched the TNN 5-day Marathon, its amazing how poorly lit the first few epsiodes were. He had some good episodes, but once he passed and Berman took over, the series took off and the stories improved. Some of the episodes got too "feel good" for me but I did like how they all related to one another. For example, the "Booby Trap" episode, where Geordi consults with the holodeck version of the original engine designer....a few episodes later, he meets the real person (anyone else annoyed Geordi continually strikes out? I mean, lonely, holodeck, HELLO! Mop the floors! :D )
DS9 was the worst one to watch. Its too bad it took so long to work into some action near the end. But the politics, Bajoran, Cardassian, etc...I mean, it was a brain teaser to keep track of how was on our side and who wasn't, etc. Plus, add the Prophets stuff and it jsut bores me to hell. I like Sisko, and enjoy how he taught me the word "apifany" or however the hell you spell it :)

Yowser,
Things are looking up for us Enterprise fans, not meaning to be shallow, but it's reason enough for me to watch it.
Here is a blonde version of the Vulcan. Momma...

I'm with you Paul on the first episode "Headlight" shot, got my attention and I'm gonna tune in next time.

I kept thinking "why don't they just beam over" then after a couple of minutes I snapped, "oh yeah they haven't been invented yet"
You know what's funny? They invented "beam me up" bit cuz they couldnt afford to build shuttles and proper "space transfers" stuff when they were filming the first ST :D

That is because they are more advanced. The republic civilisation of The Phantom Menace has been stable for thousantd of years, with Jedi Knights to keep peace, trade, science, etc.
Afterwards they have jedi wars, clone wars, republic crumbling, creation of the empire, rebellion against empire...
By the time of Luke Skywalker the state of technology is way behind what it was in the TFM.
Not just lousy ships - they have to use dumb pesants for storm troopers instead of those cool and personable battle droids.

The last couple of seasons of DS9 with the federation at war with the klingons, then the Dominion. That was the best Startrek to date IMO.
I would have agreed that Voyager was a real good series but They used the borg too much and totally ruined the mystery and creepyness "for lack of a better word" of them. Also the whole series was leading up to them getting home, and they did, in the last 30 seconds of the last episode...I couldnt believe they just ended it like that. Talk about a dissapointment.
IM looking forward to tonights episode of enterprise though :)
