and can only relate to lowbrow sit coms?

http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/TV/01/04/tv.arrested.development.ap/index.html

The show has won six Emmys and one Golden Globe, but some critics have suggested it's too zany to keep up with and the upper-class characters aren't "relatable" to audiences.

Hmmm, I dunno. I'm about middle class, barely, and I think the show is hilarious.

funny..

"I don't think the Home Builders Organization is going to support us," George says.

"Yeah, the HBO is not going to want us," replies Michael. "What are we going to do?"

"I think it's show time," George then says.

Arrested Development.  It's one of the funniest shows ever.

It's too bad few people watch it.

This just in... the networks are not motivated by awards, or talent, or quality.

This is purely a popularity contest.

You're not a consumer. You're the product.

The Coen Brothers are an acquired taste. Try "Raising Arizon", "Fargo", "Ladykillers", "O' Brother Where Art Thou?".

As for Napolean Dynamite... I didn't much care for it either.

This just in:

If people aren't watching it, maybe, just maybe it isn't as popular as the self agrandizing, self congratulatory media "we luv us" awards folks "think" it is. The ONLY award that really counts for the networks is how much money the network can make by keeping viewers watching the freaking commercial adds playing during popular shows.

Never saw it. didn't miss it, won't miss it and don't pay much attention to network television either. Frankly, IMO,  most of the sitcoms I have seen were vapid at best.

so you never saw it, yet are commenting on it.

Its worth a watch, it really is.  Honestly I think it would do good on HBO.

Yeah, popular shows like American Idol or who wants to marry a bajillionaire or meet your new insane mommy or etc.

That is lowbrow garbage and yet it constitutes 90% of the crap on TV.

According to critics apparently "it's too zany to keep up with and the upper-class characters aren't "relatable" to audiences."

Hence my thread title. However, considering what is popular, maybe I wasn't too far off the mark.

"Raising Arizon", "Fargo"...."O' Brother Where Art Thou?"

The  Nashville Network ran those three as documentaries a few weeks ago.

Immediately after the "simple folk" version of Masterpiece Theater titled "Hee Haw"

One can only conclude Jason Bateman is small screen poison

The number of viewers doesn't necessarily correspond to the quality of a show.    The original Star Trek only ran three seasons after all and look what that started.

Unfortunately, the networks don't care a whit about quality.

i think there is a very different "feeling" in each of those movies at least IMHO.

there is a kind of "eletist" comedy out there, and it is usually quite off the wall. i don't much care for that personally. give me a pauly shore movie instead :lol

but thats like most TV too... i have not watched "TV" except for packers football and family guy in literally over 6 months. nothing on is worth my time to sit there and watch it (at least network TV). i do enjoy mythbusters, and most of discoveries shows, but thats about it.

The whole western world is dumb.
As evidence I submit: The popularity of "reality" TV. The prosecution rests, M'lud.

History channel is a pack of lies. Should be killed completly.

On another note Family Guy was very funny. Think it jumped the shark real quick tho. Just a cruder version of the Simpsons. American Dad is crap I think.

Well I dont watch many of the sitcoms things since I work a midshift (2pm to 10pm).  But back when Friends was winding down to their last episode, they were showing all of the behind the scenes and rehearsals.  Every line, phrase, quip and such are all but tweaked and tested for maximum laugh quality.  After seeing that, it was hard to ever enjoy the re-runs.

The last few sitcoms I've liked were shows like "Everybody Loves Raymond", "Frasier"  and a handful of others.  I'm still a big fan of Law & Order as well as CSI.  But not many of the comedies are right for me.  I just grow weary of this "tested" humor.

"How does Nielsen Media Research know who is watching?

The way that Nielsen Media Research finds out about who is watching is to measure what a sample of television viewers are watching. For our national ratings estimates, we use a sample of more than 5,000 households, containing over 13,000 people who have agreed to participate. Since there are over 99 million households with TVs in the U.S., it might seem that a sample of 5,000 is just not big enough to represent the nation."

Nielsen Media (http://www.nielsenmedia.com/whatratingsmean/)

How can a statement be made that The whole western world is dumb when samplings like This are used to define who watches shows?  Is that a poor attempt at a troll or have you been raised in a sound bite oriented world for so long that fact checking and miniscule amounts of research are too far out of reach to be looked at.  I mean, really, I have invested about 2.5 minutes finding that link, and presenting it.  "The whole western world is dumb" clearly took a great deal of effort to slather out.

Drawing a conclusion about a hemisphere based on the TV Habits of a few?  ....  dumb.

Now you're talking statistics. In my limited stasticial education, one can't take the results of a non-random sample and apply them to the population... but DMF  knows far more about stats than anyone else here, I think. Ask him.

Too bad, was a funny show. Reminded me a lot of Showtime's Sherman Oaks back in the 90s.
