Title: the german helmet..
Post by: ~Caligula~ on January 05, 2006, 01:37:46 PM
i ran into this pic today.german firemen at the site of the collapsed skating ring.
the helmet we all know...is it still in production? what kind the army uses? i`m kinda shocked that this design is still in use. not because it`s bad (the new US helmets are very similar, and they were designed by computers for max protection...germans were way ahead the allies in this field I guess) but this very shape symbolises something not so pleasant.

Definately creepy "in a way" but I got to admit, its great helmet technically.

Remember when the current US combat helmet came out and everyone was critical of it because its styling was similar to the german helmet.
Point being, it provided the best overall coverage/protection of any of the helmets used in the second world war.

In any event they are firemen and they save lives and property in emergencies.

I'd say it's a symbol of Germany rather than anything unpleasant.  They had the same helmet back in WWI so it was around a lot longer than the German Socialist party as it was known in the 30s and 40s.

finland still uses the the stahlhelm style helmet. the fact is that it is an astoundingly good helmet. could stop .45 colt pistol rounds. there is even a story from WWI about a bullet going in the helmet, skidding around the inside of the brim and shooting out the other side. it is probably the best single helmet design (for it's time) in history.

Theres a  G.I. helmet in the D-Day museum in New Orleans that showed this. (Or was there, soneone probally looted the place.)

Boy a helmet that could stop a .45 round. That would be one headache you'd be grateful for.

Sorry Caligula, i see so many ww2 reincarnation in the us all wearing
real german ww2 helmets. Is this no so pleasant too?
This today helmet the fireman & Red cross uses have nothing to do
with the former ww2 helmets. Maybe if you cut the rubber from the back
part and paint it black it would look close. But who cares, this guys are
there helping people.

Would you happen to have any sources for this? I don't know what's being used in the basic training these days, and what I got from our Defence Forces (mil.fi (http://www.mil.fi/english/)) didn't show the basic gear... Just the comment "special forces have a composite helmet", which is shown here (I hope the pic shows)..

The English version offers even less information, equipment (http://www.mil.fi/maavoimat/kalustoesittely/00040_en.dsp), but it does show the composite helmet as the standard..

Guess the germans figure. If it aint broke, dont fix it.

Pretty amazing that the germans have been using that helmet so long  and
the americans using a computer aided design come up with almost the exact same design style wise.

Equally amazing is that some numbnuts  or group of numbnuts actually thought the helmet the americans and brits used during WWI was a good idea.
