None of you guys new this guy I don't think.
The story makes him sound like an idiot.
He acted like it sometimes, but he was a smart guy, smart guy with no common sense.
He paid for it with his life.
I have known him for 8 years, since he was 19.
He lived a wild life, and was a loyal and good friend.
Just remember, sometimes stupid can get you killed; mixing booze into it makes it worse.
Today is worse then yesterday on this because now everyone is sending out pictures and stories about him and some are funny and so him, and you laugh and then realize the guy is gone.
All we have left is memories now
. The story in the papers. (http://www.insidebayarea.com/argus/localnews/ci_3376828)

GTO,
Sorry for the loss of your friend.
I have to say that he made a dumb choice for a "bright individual". There is a difference between living life and doing things that in effect equate to throwing that life away. From what you have said, even though you are his friend, you realized it too.

I do Mav, we all do. His stupid antics finaly cought up to him.
Even bright guys can do stupid stuff.
We all get stupid when drinking heavily.
Hell him and my boss had a conversation not to long ago about how he needed to get away from the crowd of guys he hung around with most. He knew it was taking its toll on him.
I never hung out with his other set of friends, way to wild for my tastes.
His death is pretty close to being darwin stupid.
Just a stupid waste. I think that makes it harder to take.

GT,
Truly sorry for the loss of your friend. Remember him well...

GTO very sorry to hear about your friend. I think that even at 27 it would have been a good idea for his friends that were there to call his dad and tell him that his son was hurt and refusing to go to the hospital...
Not placing blame... don't get me wrong.. just asking that the code of silence be broken sometimes.

GTO,
The EXACT same thing happend to a friend of mine about 5 years ago. They were partying up at the lake and even rented a cabin so no one would have to drive. Well he and others got restless and decided to go look for a bar. While driving there my friend clay decides he wants to go truck surfing. He did not succeed in getting on top of the truck but did manage to bounce his head off of the pavementl.
The worst part about it was that he was fine. He didn't lose conciousness and like your friend did not want to go to the hospital. They went back to the barracks that morning. Clay went to his room. at about noon the duty NCO stopped by to check on him and found him convulsing on the floor. They drove him to the hospital and then life flighted him to San Diego. He was pronounced brain dead 6 hours later. at midnight his parents pulled the plug on their son.
I feel your pain and I'm sorry for your loss. It sucks that good people do stupid things and pay for it with their lives.

GTO,
we've all done stupid things. This didnt sound any stupider than some of the things I've done. Just an accident.

Yeah, I'm sorry. That was in bad taste.

Sorry GTO, few guys at my school were killed doing a stupid thing, well a couple stupid things, and it finally caught up with them. It happens.

Thanks guys.
The memorial service was Saturday. A friend flew in from Boston for it; it was nice to see people who I had not heard from in years. Tons of people came. It was interesting; he was friends with everyone, punks, Goths, geeks, skaters, surfers, teens, older people etc. He also new some amazingly hot girls!
There was almost an hour of people getting up and speaking about him.

I must have missed this thread previously. That sucks GTO...sorry to hear you lost a friend.
On this:
"Zegelin slightly opened the vehicle's door on the front passenger side and when the driver made a quick turn, Zegelin fell out of the vehicle and slammed his head on the concrete, the official said."
It really *sounds* like the driver did this on purpose (if not then apologies)...my roomate did it to me once on a golf cart. I leaned out to pick up my ball after I hit an errant shot, and he yanked the cart the opposite way...intent of seeing me go flying. It worked...thank god it wasn't done on pavement.
Were any charges laid against the driver?

Curv
Thanks.
I dont know any of the dudes that he was with that night.
And I agree it sounds like it was on purpose, to try and be funny, but thats just ****ed up when the guy only had one leg and was drunk.
Last I heard the Police were looking into things but since none of it got reported untell everyone was sober, I doubt any charges will come down on it.
