Title: Flight School..NOT!
Post by: ASTAC on January 06, 2006, 07:15:46 PM
So for awhile now, I had the idea that once my military career was over, I'd become a commercial pilot in some capacity (most likey not a major airline)

So I looked into it today deciding I'd finally do something about it.

Being in the financial position I am in( Recovering from bankruptcy brought on by my first wife) I wanted top see if Navy Tuition assistance or the GI BIll would cover it.

They will. Here's the catch.

THEY JERKS WON'T COVER THE INTIAL CERTIFICATION!!

only the follow on training you need to get certified for more stuff.

What kind of freakin' sense does that make?

Another unattainable goal for at least another 5 years or so until I have the credit to get out a loan for the training. What a load of crap!

One thing that's cool about the USAF is the aero club.  They offer free ground courses and discounted flight time.  It's a club on base I wish I had the time and money when I first moved here but couldnt.  Now I'm leaving to do something else.

It's been that way as far back as I can remember. You have to get your private license on your own to show some aptitude, fitness and perserverance before the taxpayers fund additional ratings.

I don't find that shocking or awful.

its the path I took.  I had to pay for my private out of pocket.  But everything since has been paid for and not by the government but by the college.  In Texas, veterans get free tuition at public colleges.  Have to be a Texas veteran though.  This could be changing in the future.

So I get 45-50k worth of training for free, small price for 6k out of my own pocket.

<----just came in from flying on one of these courses.  Weeee approaches all over houston tonight.

didnt head up to IAH, did try one at hobby.  I Told the instructor it wasnt going to happen....practice approach on friday night into a semi major airport and in a 172.  Nothing like trying to do one in a 172 at 120 indicated.  2 minutes into the approach they cancel the clearance and boot us out back to ellington.  I giggled like a school boy.
