I'm disappointed. Rather than build a vehicle that will challenge a Jeep, they went the easier route and built one to challenge the Nissan Xterra.
-
What the **** is that? What the **** were they thinking.
Toyota, what the ****?
-
Looks like someone took a real Landcruiser and ate it.
Thats what came out the other end.
Nice and rounded like the **** it is.
Paint brown and add peanut decals and you would have the perfect car for a plumber.
:D
Since it is prolly to compete with the hummer it needs more bling.
-
Isn't Nissan Toyotas real competition? Jeeps are not that reliable or competitive are they? I like the new Toy, looks cool, though a bit too overt looking for me. Should be quite peppy with that 4l liter engine. I prefer the Nissan Pathfinder better myself.
-
This is not the 70s, jeeps are just fine reliability wise. In fact the wragler is pretty damn good from what I can tell. I don't know anyone who has had problems other then general maintanace stuff.
In fact every person I know with a toyota has had for more issues then I have had with my American cars.
Maybe they got the few toyota lemons.
The current wrangler will eat this thing alive off road, as will the 07 model when it comes out.
-
Looking at reliability only - repair records - my impression was that Toys and Nissans lead the entire pack of SUV makers... (hey I hated the 70's anyway)
-
It is all relative now.
I would not buy a car based on reliability; no automaker is producing really crappy cars that are going to break down all the time.
I was speaking from my personal experience with Toyota, (granted I am bitter of there treatment of my mother) I will NEVER own another car with Toyota on it.
If I was going to wheel something new I would buy a Jeep Rubicon (I did as a mater of fact).
I wheel all the time with an 03 Xterra and it does OK, can't go the places I can on trails but it was way better in sand.
They are marketing this as an off road capable vehicle like the original was.
That market is the Hummer H2 and H3, the Nissan Xterra, the Powerwagon, and the Jeep Wrangler.
The Mopar products are the kings of the hill off road. The H2 and H3 and 05 and Newer Xterra is really what this is aimed at since it is also an IFS Car.
I bet 2 years after Toyota puts this thing on the market, someone comes out with a solid axle swap for it .
-
This thing looks more like an oversized Jeep Liberty.

Bet it is about as capable off road too! :D

I don't think that color does it justice..
Needs a darker color to possibly look more manly..
I dunno though, I kinda like it..
But then I don't like it..
-
Damn, that thing is a solid 9 on the smurfy scale. I'd give it a 10, but it's beat pretty solidly by the Honda Element and the Pontiac Aztec.
-
I looked at the pics again...
It is a Rav4 for dikes lol.
-
Speaking of Jeep, you guys might be interested in the new concept vehicles. I'm too lazy to link to them, but if you google "Jeep Cocept", you will see about 3 pretty awesome vehicles.
-
Sure thats not Tonka?
-
Toyota and Nissan dominance is in the real UTILITY vehical market, ie not "sports". The likes of the Landcruiser and Patrol are awesome vehicles and jeep has nothing in that range.
In the SUV range the Toyota 4Runner and Nissan Pathfinder dominate here, they are more reliable, but they are also commonly found in diesel, which is prefered by offroaders here for its survivability in wet conditions (big difference you notice with a lot of american 4wd piccies is the lack of breather or snorkle kits (note the mod on this piccie). Dunno if Jeep even offer diesel (certainly never seen it here):

Heh, I thought this was going to be about F1.
-
GTO what do you think of the 07 Wrangler? Its not too far of a stretch from the classic, and I think itll grow on people just like the TJ did.
Nuke: Jeep Compass?:cry
-
I will never understand why they insist on putting up the same poorly designed roof rack on SUVs.
They look cool but are next to useless.
although that one in particular has a little area you might be able to place luggage in
-
Looks like some Tonka designers made it to the big time.
-
ewww.. looks like a Playmo car.
Playmobile

They are selling Jeep Cherokee CRD in here with a 2,8liter 163hp/400Nm diesel engine. IIRC those are manufactured in Graz in Austria and only for european markets.
-
I like it. The price is expected to be about $20k. I'm waiting to see the interior still. The concept interior was awesome... hope they at least keep some of the detail. I've only ever owned Toyota's though. Celica, Corolla, and now a 4Runner that'll be paid off the week these's FJ's arrive. Tempting, tempting...

Don't forget the third "10" candidate. Chrysler Pacifica, and heck, the Buick Rendevous.
Karaya
PS - If Toyota had a brain in it's organization they would drop the "FJ" designation from this POS. It gives THE original FJ's the Clap.
-
GtoRA2, for you, I'm going to have to recommend the Toyota Scion xb ... perhaps better suited to your hip lifestyle :p
-
I used to own one of those old Toyota Landcruisers.
Looks like they have kept the design true to the most loved features of that model. The wrap around windows at the back, the exterior hinges on the rear door, the front end is pretty exact in how it looks, the short wheelbase.
That old Landcruiser has a huge following around the world. I can see why they are trying to update the design but stay true to the roots.

I own a 2000 Xterra. Like you say, offroad it does okay. A few things would make it more capable. Locking diffs, solid axle, better armor, etc... That said, I'd stack a stock Xterra or Pathy against any H2 or H3. There are advantages to being a lighter and narrower vehicle.
As for the solid axle swap... if they come up with one I bet it's going to be expensive. Calmini currently has an SAS kit for the Xterra. IIRC, it's roughly $2500 or so. Still have to find an axle and that's going to cost $1000 or more. One of the guys on the XterraOwnersClub BBS did the swap. He was up to over $6000 on just parts. For that kind of money and hassle, I think I'd rather buy a vehicle that already has solid axles and locking diffs.

Ouch. They're actually not bad. I drove one for 6 months before they were on sale in the US. It was all done up with TRD rims, exhaust, suspension, alpine system & screens. It was pretty fun. I'm kinda baised though... I was paid to drive it.
-
SRT8 Jeep Cherokee.
'nuff said.

Like I said, I wont ever own another toyota.
I am far from hip, I just bought a 4X4 to actualy wheel it. I bet most new FJ owners buy it because it is cute or their rainbow sticker will look good on it.
:D

I kinda like it, it is a little weird looking but still looks more or less like a jeep.
I like they kept the solid axles.
The rubicon model comes with 32s.
The only real downside I see it the oilpan is really low hanging and the exaust is a bit messy.
I am sure the aftermarket will fix its offroad flaws.

Yeah the brother in law decided agaist the SAS, he is going to sell the X and buy a 96 to 99 Grand Cherokee. Solid axles, good suspension off road and V8s!

YUCK!! and whats with that huge panel on the side towards the back with no window in it?

Your right there, the wragler does not have much utility. You can not take 4 people and any cargo at all.
I have not see many pathfinders on the trails here, lots of older toyotas though. Even a few new ones with SAS swaps.

I've seen a couple of Pathfinders on some Xterra club runs I've made. As near as I can tell, there's little difference between the X and the Pathy other than cosmetics.
-
I just bought a used 2002 Pathy 4wd, I love it. I bought it for boat towing, (rated for 5000 lbs) and to keep from getting stuck in sugar sand when I visit my brother who lives in the middle of a huge orange grove. It is really good in sand... like the Xterra.
-
Does your X have the alternator mounted at the bottom of the engine like the 03?
I know there is one guy who ran a Pathfinder on the rubicon trail. He has the story posted on his site. Pretty cool, they said it was harder then hell!

Your point?
-
Looks like rice on steroids. Visual appeal is a personal taste.
-
I like the look of it... I'm dissapointed by the way it's equipped.

If your alternator is on the bottom like the 03 model Xterra, if it ever goes out have it done by a shop.
My god what a pain in the ass.
The whole setup is a boondoggle.
The Alternator is right next to the steering box, we had to take off the front skid, the tire and the rubber wheel well liner.
Getting the wonky electrical connecter off was a royal *****. (needle nose vice grips and a long flat head screw driver and lots of cussing)
The bolts are a ***** to get to even with all that removed. If you are right handed it sucks even worse. If you have big hands good luck!
Me jeep took 10 minutes. It took two days and about 8 hours to do this.
It has its own belt. The belt tensioning system is really cheesy.
I do not think the Nissan enginers thought about the engine compartment layout to make it a better offroad vehicle.... Since even a shallow body of water will drown the alternator.
I wish I had some pics lol.
It was so frustrating I was about to sugest we tow it to a field and light it on fire and claim it was stolen! :D

The 2.8 4 cyl diesel Jeep Liberty is available here and gets very good reviews. I've never noticed one on the road (of course the only external difference would be a name badge).
That toyota looks like crap.
-
Looks like the product of an incestuous encounter between a land cruiser and a rav-4.
-
Looks like a Hummer.

THanks for the tip. :)
From what I've read at the xterraownersclub, the biggest issue with the alternator isn't water. It's debris in the water that mucks it all up. Not much water around here for me to worry about in any case.
-
True that.....
I am sure your right, semi clean water is ok. Drowning it in muddy good is the bad.
Still, OMG it sucked to change!
