Title: Fire Direction for SBs
Post by: Rino on January 12, 2006, 10:22:48 PM
What we have now was surpassed by smoothbores firing stone shot,
could we at least have some sort of rudimentary range finder?

LOL.. I hate the shore batteries for that very reason. You fire a shot... WAIT.. WAIT... Where did my tracer go???... WAIT... Splash...

Was that in front of the boat or behind it? That splash was so close I can't tell...

Damnit... Reload!!!!

Fire!!!... WAIT... WAIT.... Splash!!!!... Damn.. I can't tell if that was too close or too far...

Damnit... Reload already!!!!

Turn turret... CHIT.. Hard stop... Golly-geen the boat is out of view!!!! Damn stupid slow gun...

How far is that damn boat anyway?

I was lighting up a CV pretty nicely last night in one. First time playing with it, too. :D

When people figure out how to zoom, CV's won't stand a chance.

Rangefinders of some sort need to be implemented.  The other end (Naval Gunfire vs a fixed SB) is just as bad.  If you are going to have "land mode" gunnery, how about at least showing the mountains the shore batteries are located on when you pull up a map?

Even a "simulated" rangefinder where it just gives the range to within 1K would be something during a sea battle.  We don't need to implement some complicated visual rangefinder here, we just need something to get the gunners in the ballpark.  Naval gunners were scoring long range (20K) hits at JUTLAND (thats WW I folks), so I don't think it is too much to ask for a system that lets supposed WW II naval gunners get hits at long range.

While we're at it, how about colored dye for your shells.  I was firing
at a CV the other day and couldn't tell my shots from the 5 inch guys
apparently shooting at PTs or something.

that was a problem in real life. that is the exact reason why the Dreadnaughts were developed, with all main guns the same caliber.

Having no experience with heavy artillery, I'd still think an 8" shell
splash might be a tad bigger than a 5 inch one.

I did a quick google of coast artillery and found a wonderful site
concerning some coastal defenses at Sitka, Alaska.

This guy really spent some time researching the site...here's a link
Shoals Point (http://www.sitkaww2.com/harbordefenses/Locations/shoalspt/shoalspt.html)

Here is the part I noticed.

Also located along the beach are two small concrete 20mm Anti-Aircraft gun positions.

They didn't just stick 'em out in the open like they do the AA positions in Aces High.

I know how to zoom...

1. put mouse cursor right on the cross hairs.
2. put view mode to pan
3. zoom in to max
4. elevate gun to guess of range
5. pan view down to see the boat again
6. fire

Then repeat all the crap I typed in my first post.

The last time I tried to hit a CV with the SB, I think I fired maybe 25 shells and I only hit the boat once.

Boat guns have land-mode that allows them to click on the map to get range and baring to target. Why don't SBs have a feature like that?
