Sadam was dangerous for real if not temporarily neutered.

Yup this guy scares me as well.  He's a madman and a radical.  Years of European appeasment HAVE gone no where (as usual) with this man.

Years of European appeasement **HAVE** gone nowhere.  (past tense)

Even some of the Euro's are getting pissed, though only because he has been denying the holocaust.

Years of US threats seem to have achieved equally little.

I think Ahmedinejad is a different kettle of fish: Saddam was ruthless and evil but at least he was more or less sane. Ahmedinejad is a religious extremist showing increasing signs of a messiah complex (or Mahdi complex I gues if you are a Muslim). However Saddam was more or less an absolute dictator whereas the President of Iran is much more limited (by the electorate and MPs, by the religous establishment especially the Guardian's council, by the military and ultimately by the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei).

And decades of American meddling in Iran ended up in the 1979 Islamic Revolution that caused this present mess, so you're hardly in a position to point the finger are you?

The CIA's Operation Ajax overthrew the elected Iranian government and imposed an oppressive dictatorship.

Once that dictatorship fell you imposed sanctions unilaterally that amount to little more than economic warfare by any standard.

You then encourage Iraq to attack Iran and a war that kills hundreds of thousands of young iranians is the result.

You then invade Iraq on a bogus pretext and make it quite clear that Iran is also on the hit list.

Now why would they feel they need the ultimate deterrent that nukes offer? Why indeed.

Personally, I would love to let Iran do whatever it wants... unfortunately, a single modern day nuke would affect the whole world.

Hate to say it, but Iran won't get a nuke... either there will be a massive airstrike or assassinations will be used. No, I won't thinking about US reactions I am thinking about Israel.
