This was posted by SOB and it was generally considered to be genius at work due to the potential for chicken wings being cooked while computing.

Wait...that was the FDB boards...never mind.

Be sure to change it every 3000 miles.

Intetesting idea.

Wouldn't it have cooled better if they had left at least 1 metal wall of the case?

You don't get a lot of heat transfering from the oil to the air via the acrylic.

Where if there was a metal plate or wall (say under the motherboard)
I think it would have  significantly lowered the oil temp.

They didn't say why the used acrylic. Probably what was laying around, and pretty easy to seal up.

The last page of the aritcle says motor oil is even better to use. Tempting project, but.... imagine being in a furball, and having to abort because your leaking oil... not your plane... your computer.

Cooking oil isn't exactly explosive at 100 degrees. It doesn't even burn well at 450.

Pretty cool setup, except for being a monumental PITA to swap parts out. Definitely one of the most interesting rigs I've seen.

I'm sure it works for a while, but what cools the oil, after three days of DLing Torrents?

Wouldn't it be easier (and perhaps cheaper in the long run) to just mod out one of those mini fridges?

I mean set it up under your desktop, there would be I think plenty of room for a pair of towers inside on the bottom. Run a couple of holes out the top for wireing, set the thermostat at like 25 degrees and voila.

You now have a cool computer, and an handy spot to keep a few cold drinks close by.

No modifications needed for your computer at all.
Might want to add an external cd/dvd drive to save opening the fridge.

thats where condensation becomes a problem , a fridge would prolly produce alot of it .  38

Actually condensation happens only when cold surfaces meet warmer air. The motherboard generates heat and would not get wet inside the fridge. The cooling element of the fridge would (and will) produce a lot of water/ice though.

just put the gear in the oil and then put the whole thing in a free standing freezer.  No condensation worrys, and you can overclock the bejesus out of the cpu  :t

Did you boost the voltage on the ram a lot? Heat's a killer.. ;)

Wow that is a great barton overclock. My old 2500 would do 2.4ghz on air, but after that it was unstable ever after i raised the vcore and dimm volts. I almost order a vantec stingray water kit last night , but saw a danger den kit  and now cant make up my mind. Is yours a custom water system or a kit?  Any suggestions?   38
