Title: Upgrade tips (especially graphics card)
Post by: hogenbor on January 18, 2006, 07:30:04 AM
Ok, I'm going to upgrade very soon. Gonna get me a nice new motherboard, AMD Athlon3700+ processor, a Gb of RAM. The rest I'll carry over from my current PC.

Question is, what graphics adapter should I buy? I do appreciate good value for money. AH2 is about the only reason I need a halfway decent graphics card so I'd like something that works well with it. Suggestions are appreciated.

For under $275ish, try the nvidia 6800GS.  For more than that, the nvidia 7800GT is very very fast.  The ATI 1800 series is also pretty fast but I've had better luck with nvidia.

$230 got me an X800GTO 16 pixel pipe POWERCOLOR/ATI (if ur gona go the 256meg route)

BTW.. for the 3700 I followed eagl's advice and got an Opteron 148.  Same thing, but server grade (only 10-15 bucks more).

In my business I build a lot of PC's and there have been issues lately with the fans on the ATI cards. Dunno if they got a bad lot but I know I have had to replace the fan on the ATI Card I have in my system two times in less than 6 mos. Ive also known a lot of other people who are having same problem. I replaced it this last time with the arctic cooling fan and no problems so far. just my 2 cents.
