It seems clear from all of the info presented that the 8th Air Force did indeed use 150 octane with all 3 types. It sure would be nice to see those options available in the game. :aok

Mike,
I just ordered AVIA 18/761 from the PROCAT. It is the F4U Corsair trials etc. almost 200 pages. I also have AIR 1777 which is the reports on the F4U from the USN as well as other smaller reports.
Have you ever run into any (British) tactical trials with the F4U and any Axis or Allied aircraft. I assume you visit the PRO where as I have to order and wait to see what shows up.
Anything you have or reference would be great.
Thanks

Hello Mark:
I recently obtained a 5 page Material Command Report on "Flying Characteristics and Design and Maintenance Qualities of F4U-1", dated 23 August 1943, which purpose was "To obtain pilot's comments, combat and maneuverability characteristics and design and maintenance qualities of the F4U-1 airplane, No. 02296". Combat characteristics were compared between the F4U-1 vs P-51 (Allison), P-47C and P-38G. That report might be of interest and could be a good fit for your web site (nice, btw). Send an email to the address on the page listed in my sig. with your email and I'll send that to you next week sometime. I'll keep my eyes open for F4U stuff for you. Neil has worked the F4U more than I have though, and is more knowledgeable on that subject. I'll talk to him about it or you can just contact him direct.
Cheers,
Mike

'404 mph was obtained at sea level after "cleaning up" the aircraft by removing the bomb racks and aerial bracket, repainting the wing's leading edge and rubbing down the aircraft'
404 at sea level for a P-51... and the climb rates are unbelievable too.

Thanks Mike!!
It's on the way.
Keep up the good work:aok

Flight tests of the P38G and P38L added.

Fight Journal Special Issue Winter 2005 "German Fighters". article page 68 "Butcher Bird vs. Hellcat and Corsair" ( A test pilot recalls)
test included:
rate of climb
horizontal speed
horizontal accelerations
rate of roll
manueverability
stability and control
angles of vision
general characteristics in mock combat
armament
salient features
pilot opinions of the FW190, F4U-1 and F6F-3
tactics to use against the FW190
extenuating facts to be considered
final thoughts
maybe not as detailed as desired but was a good and informative read.
would also suggest the Flight Journal Special Issue Winter 2004 "F4U Corsair" excellent read throughout

Mike/Neil,
I have received the AAF Report on the F4U-1/P-38G/P-51A/P-47C. It is facinating in that I have heard it reffered to so many times but had never seen the report.
I just wanted to ask for permission one more time before putting it on my site and say thanks for doing all the hard work.
Do you mind me asking where you found the Army Reports?? Never had much luck with those unless they pass through the PROCAT.
-
Hi Mark:
Sure, run with it. (btw That flight card was the best I could get it.)
Mike
-
Mike,
Did you read the flight card? I can't figure out why they kept repeating the test at 49" MAP on the F4U when it is good for 54".
Where there any other cards for the other A/C?
This is one of those reports where I end with more questions than answers. It is like an episode of the X-Files.

Any info upcoming on 9th USAAF Neil? Would be interesting to see, so far most of the docs are concerning RAF use and USAAF 8th AF FC usage. Since 2nd TAF went to it in early 1945, its a logical line of inquiry.
-
Hi Squire, at this time the only organizations that I know of that used 100/150 grade were ADGB, 2nd TAF and the 8th.

Read the pages posted by Sable about half way down.
Hope this helps.
Neil.

BTW I think the P38G test may well be of the P38 G stripped.
Many thanks RTO.

the 8th.
The 8th is doubtful.
-
Copy that, it looks from those docs it was considered but not done. I was just curious since most of the talk is always about the RAF and/or the 8th AF specifically.
