engines will be same as Sukhoi Flaker series (el-cheapo), avionics and missiles are obviously made with Russian assistance

What does everyone keep saying about Chinese thinking on the idea of copyright? :D
Anywho, It seems they've started to copy something other than Russian military equipment. Me thinks that like most knock-offs the biggest differences between this and the F-22 will probably be the quality, pricetag, and the numbers produced.
Oh, and that you'll be able to buy the J-XX via Walmart.

Close. The profits we give china via walmart is whats paying for 'em.
how very zen.. this centurys version of being hoisted on our petards.

Ain't it the sorry truth? I hope they really are as crappy as we'd like 'em to be...but that might be wishful thinking. Not that I don't think we'll maintain an edge, but it's way narrower than I'd like.
Seems like, time was, a technological advantage of this significance would have stayed secret longer. Sometimes, I don't think we're careful enough with who we grant security clearances to.
Even if it is crappy, numbers can be a problem. And large numbers of, maybe not invisible, but hard-to-see, aircraft is just not good.
Hey...just to leap completely off-topic...Anyone see that now the Chinese claim to have discovered America? Only one highly questionable document supports the notion, but they're yelling it to the rooftops. It is to laugh...
We have simpy got to stop being such dorks when it comes to protecting our national secrets...and start hanging traitors, in public.
-
We should just outsource our military to them.
-
Can't we just start feeding them opium again?
-
2015? I highly doubt they are going to get this thing built, tested, developed and fielded with any kind of quality in 9 years.
This is nothing though, the New York Times had secret documents on this aircraft years ago.

Well If you knew some history yourself you might understand a little more .....
..... it's a Chinese claim? The man who did the bulk of the modren research and wrote "1421" was a BRITISH submariner:
Gavin Menzies (Royal Navy Submarine Commanding Officer, retired) first went to China in 1937, where he spent the first two years of his life. He joined the Royal Navy in 1953 and served in submarines from 1959 to 1970.
You can go through his evidance if you want, I doubt you'll be able to discredit him. Do you know who Prince Henry the navigator is? Do you know about the Zheng He at all? The Chinease backlash to expansionism?
That's just basic stuff. If you don't know about that stuff your hardly in a postion to critique.
There is much, much more than one document.

=======================
Don't underestimate China. Respect the dragon. Speaking regionally, look at the Japanese..... never in history has a civilization transformed like they did since the late 19th century.
China on the moon? how soon? IMHO space is the future, Investment in NASA and further private projects, like the X-Prize, are needed.
Not that we should stop makeing jets or anything :D

China bought lisence to produce Su-27 series, but IIRC they still can't make engines - AL-31 series uses some interesting technologies that can't be copied by a "blast furnace in every village yard", like turbine blades made of mono-crystal steel (!!!).
Pictures above look like planes were made by famous Chinese designer Mi Ko Yang :D They even have a scale-model of 1.42 that never flew (J-XX)...
Did I tell you a joke about cheap fake Chinese Christmas-tree decorations?
-
What a rip off, lol.

I wonder when the first spy plane will get rammed by one.

Having had experience in Aircraft developmental testing I was speaking of practical knowledge not American boasting.
That and as of late I never pass up a chance to take a crack at the NYT.

A few things about the Chinese first "discovery of america"
Zheng He never claimed it and he left no landmarks of the type his real voyages left all over the pacific islands, arabia and african coast. Hundreds of gigantic ships visting america would leave a considerable record of some sort.
By 1421 the vikings had quietly discovered, polulated and colonized norh america for long time allready.
Nobody from the "old world" did anything productive with the discovery until columbus.
So its really lame to even talk about a chines discovery of america.

There's a very good book out there by Coontz. It's about a near nuclear war between Russia and Japan.
Anyway, technology advanced to such a point that it became much like WW2 dogfighting. If you turned on your radar, you were dead. If you turned on jamming, you were dead. If you tried to use a missile, you were dead.
Basically, the japanese had a long range decent fighter that had great stand off power. But this meant nothing because any use of technology would result in the death of the pilot.
The Russian's "Leased" a squadron of american pilots and planes. The planes were F22's with skin that changed color. They basically became invisible.
So here you have invisible planes fighting fast invisible planes. Pretty much comes down to tactics and speed again.

Thats Stephen Coonts' "Fortunes of War"

Stealth aircraft will look like a stealth aircraft.
They've allready built the J-10, and I don't doubt they can built a stealth fighter too, but I doubt the timeframe.
Even the Iranians are building a light(A-4 size) subsonic stealth attack plane.

Wow.
I hope it will be translated and printed here. I love to read Western fiction about Russia, always find something new about my country.
"Duchess Grishka was drinking vodka from samovar under a shady cranberry".
So far my favourites are Clancy's "Red Storm Rising" and Turtledove's "Worldwar" series.

I dont think Russia is much different than America really. Very different socially and politically, but the very base of the two nations is very similar.
Manifest Destiny is pretty much the goal of all developed nations.

Well, I dare to say I see some differences ;) Protestant ethics is absolutely alien to Russian people.
Looked into Wikipedia, searched for "Manifest Destiny", got intriguing result.
"Manifest Destiny is a phrase that expressed the belief that the United States had a divinely inspired mission to expand, spreading its form of democracy and freedom."
Well, it's almost opposite to Russian tradition. During the expansion of XVI-XIX centuries Russians always kept original local forms of government and didn't interfere into details, affiliating local governments and elites and letting them participate in all forms of activities of the Empire, thus giving them another dimension of opportunities. In Soviet times this tradition was kept, in fact in Central Asia and other national autonomies local lords kept the power, only called "Party leaders". Same policy can be easily seen now in Russian Federation. We don't force "our form of freedom".
More to say, I find this "MD" stuff dangerous. :( I don't want any "democracy" or "freedom" forced here. We have our own way, and so do other nations.
-
What I mean to say is, you want to spread your influence and become powerful. You don't have to do it our way, but it's in all nations interests to do the same. It's mans base nature. It's why we chase women. It's why we explore. It's why we go to space.

In this way we are probably closest nations in the world.
What I meant about "shady cranberry" is that Western writers don't understand anything about how things are here. Like some Soviet writer making a book about Americans where he describes how they hang black people for fun every Friday, 90% of the characters are unemployed or homeless, and all the bad guys are bloody capitalist exploitators (frankly speaking I don't know if such books exist, I just collected propaganda nonsence).
