Title: Superbowl history question
Post by: airbumba on January 25, 2006, 12:45:03 AM
Hey folks.

I'm trying to put a finger on a distant memory that I'm pretty dammm sure was at the superbowl.  it was Dallas playing , and during the game someone threw a bottle and clocked the ref ( sideline dude) upside the head, knocking him out cold, does anyone remember that, and if so what friggin year was that?, it's been driving me nuts.

After figuring my aprx. age, and checking the Dallas superbowl games, it has to be Miami /Dallas in '72 , Pittsburg /Dallas in '76 or a distant possibilty of the '79 game, which was also Pittsburg / Dallas.

Let me know pleeeeaaaase, this crap is bugging me.

Thanks.

It was in Minnesota in the NFC Championship game if memory serves me right...a drunken fan threw a whiskey bottle at the ref for a really, really bad call that cost the Vikings a superbowl berth.

Edit: Yah, here it sure...
Quote
1975 - The Vikings go 12-2 and again meet their nemesis in the playoffs, Dallas. With no time on the clock, and trailing by 4, the Cowboys throw a hail mary. Drew Pearson pushes Vikings cornerback Nate Wright to the ground before making the catch and scoring the touchdown in what many consider the most blatant non-call in playoff history. This loss also marks the first time a Viking fan comes to realize his fate. He then responds by drilling the offending ref in the head with a whiskey bottle. After the game, Vikings quarterback Fran Tarkenton is notified that his father has died of a heart attack.

edit: I see their's nothing new about not calling offensive pass interference, hehe.

That was really a mugging...they'd have called that today in a heart beat, unbelieveable that they didn't call it then (I grew up in Minnesota and was watching that particular game)  The ref was 5 steps behind those two watching it all the way.  I'm sure there was a healthy sum waiting for that ref from the Dallas organization in some Swiss bank account. I'll see if I can find a film clip of it. Its really amazing...

Edit: Here is a picture of the result, it doesn't show the blatant shove, just Pearson turning for the ball after he's pushed down Wright:
