I have a rockfire unit for my gameport pedals, which works brilliantly for that. I have a spare gameport CH combat stick which i want to give to a squad mate and so he'll need a USB adapter for it. The Rockfire unit has 4 modes:
- 3 Axis 4 Button
- 3 Axis 4 Button and POV hat
- 4 Axis 4 Button
- 2 Axis 8 Button
None of them really match the combat stick's 3 axis (X, Y, Throttle) 10 buttons, and POV hat.
What i want is a recomendation for a better unit, or ideas on how to get the full functionality out of my spare old-skool stick. Even if we cant get full functionality, something better than 4 buttons has got to be an improvement...
Any suggestions????

well, if he is using WindowsXP, you could go to here:

and get the lil boot file to program it, or you could run a dual boot system with win98se & winXP loaded so you could program the stick with "speed keys" CH program and save it then ingnore the stick mapping of Aces High.
( one thing - I am trying to remember if the combat stick has built in memorychip like the Fighter Stick does on the analog styles? I have not used my old combat stick since like 95 or when ever I got it )

So does that allow you to program it etc? But my squad mate doesnt have a gameport, so we need some sort of physical adapter (like the Rockfire i have but better, if thats possible).

How about adding a soundcard that has a gameport on it? Is what I did for my last setup.

It needn't be a sound-card, a MIDI-card for 10 or 20 bucks would do just as well: a MIDI-port is the same as a game-port, only another name for it ;) .

yes it allows you to program your stick's buttons and download them to the stick......then any GP to USB adapter should work fine.................
or as S2A mentioned and install a cheap SB PCI 128 or 512 sound card ( if trying to save money )
as for midi/gameports - I a week or 2 back was thinking I was having problems with getting a CH analog pro throttle to work, in trying to figure it out, I reinstalled the on-board midi/gameport to this ASUS ASN whatever Deluxe MB, it was very spikey, so I installed an old PCI SB512 sound card, it was jittery/spikey as well but not as bad, I reverted back to the USB adapter and it was smooth as silk......

edited: I am thinking it will let you program with out any problems, last time I read thru it , at first it was for fighter stick only, but he updated it supposedly to include the combat stick as well, since it is almost identical to the fighter stick with a couple of hats removed being only difference between the 2.....so don't hold me to YES IT WILL, it is worth the try though..........

Radio Shack also carries a Gameport to USB converter, I believe it has more functions, but I can't be sure since I use the Rockfire myself to connect my rudder pedals via an old CH flightstick. My red-hot modern P4 PC STILL has a Sound Blaster Audigy LS in its sole PCI slot so that I can plug in my FLCS, WCS, and rudders into a genuine gameport.
It works beautifully.
Plus I get much better sound then can be offered with the built-in sound chip. Plus I get true 5.1 surround sound. Plus I get lower CPU utilization during audio playback.
Its win-win all around.

Combat stick has the memory chip also, just as the Analog Fighterstick.
