Teenagers, they think they know everything.
A few months ago I fired a boy for hiding in the storeroom making out with one of the female cashiers. I guess he decided he would exact his revenge on me for being such an a-hole by stealing gas. Not only did he steal gas, he sold gas to his buddies at 10 cents on the dollar. Seems he figured out a loophole in our customer appreciation discount program and talked his buddies that still worked in the store into helping him.
In the last 3 months I came up $15,000 short on my gas inventory. That's around 7,500 gallons or 1 tanker load. After calling in our loss prevention nazi and the local PD, tonight we busted 3 teens that still worked at the store and 4 others that were in on it. Too bad for them they are all over 17.
Yes, it's a felony. Yes, we are procecuting. Yes, they are facing time in the pen. I'm just happy they thought this thing thru before they made a huge mistake that will haunt then for the rest of their lives.

Way to go RPM. Sorry about the a-hole teens. I'm glad you made an example of them rather then just slapping their wrists. Then again $15,000 isn't anything to just be slapped about. Are you looking toget some of that money back?
-
We'll ask for restitution but probably won't see anything for a long time.
-
Once again the petroleum industry stomps on the common man.
No Prison for Oil!
(sorry, coudn't resist)

You sound like your taking it philosophically RPM. These guys hardened criminals or errant teens? Hell, they did make a huge mistake seeems like. Are they going to repay what they stole from you? Would serve 'em right if they all had their driver licenses revoked for 20 years.
Oh well, the loophole part they exploited, what was their thinking or rational? What was your discount program, how did it work?

We offer 5 cents a gallon discount when you buy $25 in groceries. It prints out a code on your reciept that you enter and it changes the price. Problem was that if you entered it as a pre-pay, the code would automaticly authorize the sale and the fuel desk would never know about it. They were saving the tickets and reselling the codes. They would come back after the store was closed, enter the code and get the gas.
That was not enough for them, tho. They started pocketing cash, never ringing the sale up and turning on the pump anyway. We watched them for a week before making the bust.
It's really sad. One is a student council member, another is the organ player at his church. Ya just never know...

They stole $15,000 worth of gasoline. That's not a slap on the wrist and that's a large operation.
First offense or not...if you want to play the felony game you need to pay the felony admission. You're playing ball in the penal league.
Maybe one of those judges with creative sentencing (I'd love to be a judge!) will make them wear a sign that says something like "I stole gas, laugh and point as you pass"

My step brother got 3 years in federal pen for grand theft auto, first offense, under 18. Last time he did it was my mom's car and he went to state pen for 5 years I think. He's up for parole this year or next. He got his, they should get theirs. They'll be out in 2 years with good behaviour.

In 10 years, I say one will be a banker, one a millionaire from an IPO and the other a Microsoft vice-president. ;)

Aside the main topic.. isn't that a bit harsh action without a warning?
Oh well, I just don't find it thaaaat serious, I'm not so conservative or religious ;)
Otherwise, what a bunch of handsomehunkes.

One time I coulda been in trouble for that, believe it or not. I was hitching a ride from college back to home town due to expedient love lost interests. I left the dorm at about 12 midnight wearing a huge diamond shaped dayglo orange poster on my back ( I made so I'd be visible.). Walked to the interstate and a black guy pulled over to offer a ride. After checking the car and it was just him, I got in and after going down the road a bit, I noticed he had a screwdriver where the keys should be in the steering column.
I asked why that was and he snapped back, "you got something against riding in a stolen car?" I said I needed to get to Mobile fast and I'd pay him for gas. He said he stole the car we were in from a used car dealer's lot about 30 minutes before and wanted to get rid of it and get another car at a motel parking lot, and I could have that one.
I didn't like that idea but agreed and he said to let him know when two minutes were up. He had a roll-up bag of tools for stealing cars. Two minutes passed and he couldn't get into the car he picked out, I said let's go and we drove on to Mobile, after making a gas stop with a sheriff's car there and a deputy inside the station. This was about 3 AM. We were lucky...and I had the chance to, but I said not to worry about me (and by that I guess it made me an accomplice in a way, but I was wearing a big orange sign on my back like an idiot and had nothing on my mind but getting home)
We rolled into Spanish Fort at 4 AM, I thanked the driver, shook hands and gave him $10 (all I had) and wished him luck. I told him to try to return the car but not to get caught. He had told me earlier that stealing cars was his hobby and that he did it on weekends just for something to do. Actually he was a pretty nice guy all things considered. Not a violent sort. I didn't want him to get in trouble.

But I am a good teenager :cry

Thats a nice little story.
Marv Albert has some crazy hobbies too
-
Lol Leslie.. From the looks of it you were amazingly lucky to not to be found in some ditch with that said screwdriver pointing out from your chest. :D
-
Wow, that sucks. Not that I feel THAT sorry for them but yes those kids screwed up and now they have to pay the piper.
So RPM could you hook me up with some gas coupons? ;)
-
was the girl he was in the closet with involved in the theft?
what happened to her?

That's a fire-able offense?
Was she hot?
Then again, I can't think of too many gas station cashiers that are. Most of the hot ones go work at the mall or the strip club.

Would have been cheaper just to throw the kid a rubber and say carry on.

Not if she was legally a minor (unable to consent to sex). Depending on state laws, in some states if you are the adult "responsible" for the property, and 2 minors have sexual contact on that property, you can be charged with anything from "contributing to the delinquincy of a minor" to accessory to statutory rape. Depends on the age of the boy too.
Not that I wouldnt have done it too at that age, but the kids arent the ones that end up getting screwed over by the legal process.
-
You are certainly within your rights and I respect that. Personally I would (Well I think I would, you can never know) have given them one chance to repay me, with interest. Make the punishment fit the crime.
As I said, in your shoes, maybe I would have done the same thing. At least you caught the bastiges.
-
The juvenile unit I work at is full of little twerps just like that.
NONE of them will end up being millionaires or ceos.
Don't waste a lot of time or sympathy on them. They definitely know the difference between right and wrong. They choose to do what they WANT to do, and always lay the causes at someone else's feet.
We don't turn many of them around. They're the future criminal class. In the last six months we have released about twenty of them back into society. Two of these have committed murders that were related to drug or gang activity and another shot and injured a man in the course of a burglary.
God alone knows what the others have done.
-
I would have handled it in the same way rpm. That's a hefty crime those kids pulled off. It wouldn't have even crossed my mind to offer them a second chance.

I think it's good to know about contributing factors, but ultimately we are responsable for our own actions regardless.

You're dang right it's a fireable offense. They both should have been at their registers. That's why I even noticed they were gone. We got way backed up and customers were griping. We are not just a gas station, we are a full service grocery store that has gas. I compete aginst 2 Wal-Mart's and 2 major chains nearby, customer service is my only drawing card. I don't own the place, just manage it. I have the owner to answer to.
Yeah, she's hot and she knows it. Blonde about 5'0", 90 lbs, built like a brick outhouse and a cheerleader. You have to shift your thinking a bit. There is no mall or strip club out here in the boondocks. She's definitely the type to wind up in Dallas working at The Lodge after graduation.
-
it's a felony offense, if they didn't know that apparently they should have taken more U.S. Law classes. If they want to say anything that they didn't know what they were doing ws a felony, then it's their fault for not being responsible Americans. Felony offense you get no second chance, brotha.
-
They might all end up stupid, poor & incarcerated, but it sounds like she at least has a shot at marrying some $$

Dude, your entrepreneurial skills suck, I woulda hooked up the back room security cam to a live web feed, your woulda made a fortune in no time.

So, they both got fired...right?
-
I can't believe there are some of you that believe that they should only get a slap on the wrist.
Thats whats wrong with our Justice system...There are too many slaps on the wrist..too many 2nd chances.
-

Did I understand it right that SHE didn't get fired? :D
-
Wouldn't he be accused of discriminating because of gender ? I think he was wise enough to get rid of both :)
-
If she's hot, blonde and obviously easy, only an idiot would fire her ass. ;)
-
If she's hot, BLONDE and unable to keep herself under control for a simple working shift only an idiot would consider keeping her at a CASH register.
If she's a true blonde, how does she make change??????
-
could always ask the guy who was with her in the closet if she is a 'real' blonde;)

From a business standpoint, dating in the workplace can often be disastrous, particularly if it results in loss work hours, or acrimonious break ups that lead to workplace disasters. An employer can prohibit dating in the workplace, so long as the employer enforces the guidelines consistently – that is, against everyone. Whether dating is allowed depends largely on the workplace policies, and is not governed by statutory laws. However, if there is a policy against dating in the workplace, it is a legal cause for termination.
I read this on legal-database.com
