...I was surprised to find just how interesting a match the Friederich v. the Spit V has been. The spit still has the upper hand, but not by much.

I'm more of a BnZ guy and to me the 109F seems to have a very useable edge over the Spit V - as long as you avoid any kind of Co-E turnfight. The 109's rate of climb and speed advantage mean that you can generally always enter the fight from above, and then can escape if you get into trouble.
The 190 is a class better IMO - it's a little faster and still outclimbs the Spit, but has a more forgiving gun package, and it's handling at high speed and roll rate at all speeds are much better then the 109. Also it has much better visiblity.
I'm really interested to see how the Spit IX is going to alter the balance.

Yes it is interesting. The 109F fought the Spit 5 over Malta and the good LW pilots took a good few Spit V pilots to their graves.
Anyone ineterested, "Battle Over Malta" by Anthony Rogers is a fantastic account of the air war there. The story of the death of Flt Lt Norman McQueen is particularly poignant and interesting from a tactical point of view. I often thinkof that encounter when playing AH. How sudden death came to the unwary.

I think the quality of the 109F pilots has been outstanding - the Finns are really giving us Brits a run for our money. The ability to engage and disengage at will, as well as climb like a rocket, are incredible assets that they're using against us. The only 109 kills I've gotten thus far are when I've caught them unawares. Mind you, I'm just an average Spit pilot, and a lot of the 109 pilots are dedicated to their craft. I'm much more comfortable driving air-to-mud in my Tiffie.

I have to say the Hurricane was propably the best plane during these few days.
In the hurrie I didnt ever have any problems dealing with the BnZers, as long as I saw them (still adjusting to the 3.0k dot range) and any one who stayed to fight was dead.
The Fredrichs melted like butter in the sun to the quad hiazookas of the Hurrie.
Found it much much more usefull then the spit. The spit doesnt have the same lethality as the hurrie. It doesnt have as distinct turning advantage as the hurrie and that is very important when you fight against BnZers.
Also the fragile wings of the spit make it much less resilient and exposes it much more to stray pings.
So personally Id rank the planes of this period like this.
1. Hurrie IIc
2. 109F
3. SpitV

yup the hurri should still be in production as front line fighter as long as HTC does the modelling on it.
