We got a bunch of Aces High guys in the area who shoot or have wanted to go shooting.
I wanna organize a get together to go shooting sometime soon after the superbowl on a saturday or sunday. I'm thinking Rifles and Handguns and evil black assault weapons if u got em. ;) I really liked the outdoor range up by Lazs place in Dixon it had great pistol and rifle ranges but I'd be open to other venues, how is is Chabot? Also in the plan is to get some food and drinks after shooting.
Who is in the bay area or nearby and wants to go? Some names come to mind who are locals and not sissies afraid of guns! :)
FunkedUp
Russian
GtoRa2
Mietla
Ramzey
Lazs
Airhead
Makarov

Good response so far guys!
We got:
Greencloud
Russian
Wolfala
Ramzey
As for the range details about Dixon, I'll have to defer to lazs about that. And maybe Gtora2 can fill us in on the Chabot range.
-
Shame it's on the other friggin side of the country...
Shame its on the other friggin side of the Atlantic. :lol
-
They only go to 100 yards at the range in Davis. I am going on vacation in February. Should be back towards the end of the month.
Russian.... you didn't buy any makarov ammo yet?
lazs
-
i know you will all probably laugh at me but here goes. i live in san fran area and have never fired a gun. mind if i come too?
-
smid... get ahold of me and I will take you shooting some time regardless of if I can get to this event or not.
Probly for someone who has never shot before this is not the kind of event you would want to be at.. Lot's of people who have never met and a lot of unfamiliar firearms around. You need to have someone pay more attention to teaching you the basics the first time you go shooting..
That is my take anyway.

send me an E-mail some time: magichamster87@yahoo.com

I'm in if I'm around. I have some things coming up the next couple of weekends...but hopefully I'll be free the day you ladies get together. Speaking of, mind if the wifey comes along?
-
I am pretty sure I can come depending on the day.
Chabot is a little bigger then the Dixon range, they have a 200 yard line but it is members only.
You can only shoot paper there I am fairly sure.
I am fine with there or Dixon.
I will have my M1A and Sig. None of my other guns are back from WA yet.
-
Here is a link to the chabot gun club site. (http://www.chabotgunclub.com/)
-
I might be interested. Sounds fun. Don't have any firearms, but it still sounds fun. I have shot in past, grew up in Idaho hunting so not totally unfamiliar with firearms. Been good 12yrs though. Would definately be willing to kick in some $$ for ammo costs.
So if a non-gun owner is welcome, I would be interested. Will depend on the date. I know end of Feb & about first 3 weeks of march I will be traveling.

just curious lazs...
not that i would be involved with this, because of where i live, but this is about gun "training"
i have shot guns before, nothing special, a .22 ruger semi auto hand gun, a ruger .22 rifle, and .40 S&W
i never had official training in any way. the .22 handgun, we were stupid teenagers in the country shooting my buddies fathers gun without permission, just plinking at trees in the woods. yeah i know it was stupid.
the other time i shot was in a range at a gun store. the .22 rifle was my friends, and we shot like 500 rounds (cheap ammo).the .40 was just a guy in the range offering to let us shoot it. he also offered a .357 with a 6" barrel, but i didn't.
anyway, other than knowing "common sence" like always point down range, don't put finger on trigger unless you are intending to fire. hold the gun securley. know how to properly unload the gun and make sure there is not a round in the chamber, and stuff like that, what else would "need" to be known to shoot for recreation?
just looking for insight from an experianced shooter.
-
Sometime towards the end of Summer we might be in the area of northern California. Perhaps we could do this again then.
Are there much in the way of RV parks in that area?
-
Mav
The Chabot gun club is in Chabot regional park. I think they have an RV area. I will see if I can find out.
I would love to do it again when you in the area! I may even have my M1 Garand back by then.

just ordered 3K + rounds Green Cloud; that'll hold me for another month or so... !
The resta you bums... I expect photos and range reports after the meet!!
Lucky bastidges!!
Any interest amongst the east coast crowd in a similar doing on eastern long island? (itsa ***** to get out here, about 2 hours travel time east of NYC)
-
Everyone is welcome! :)
Though I think lazs makes a good point that this from a safety perspective wouldnt be the best time to come shooting with so many people if you have never handled weapons before.
-
That Chabot range looks like a nice central location for most Bay Area people.
-
I'm in of course.
-
Ok... I didn't mean that you shouldn't or couldn't shoot with so many people but.... If you have not handled guns before then there is a lot of basic stuff you need to know as mustain pointed out.
mustain.. you are about right... you need to know the basics you have pointed out and the rules of the particular range you are at... they will toss you out if you get too confused. When I am with a new shooter I still like to enjoy the day but it is much more relaxing if you can take your time showing him/her some safety stuff without a lot of distractions.
It really isn't that complicated and not even that dangerous... target shooting is rated, I believe as the safest sport... even more than golf but... the potential for real injury is there.
It's a fun thing and if there is time it is allways neat if someone with some experiance can also let you try a lot of different guns and maybe throw in some tips on how to be more accurate..
If there are enough types of firearms tho.... seems that new guys will allways find one that they just click with and do well with... that is great... builds confidence and is more fun..

I’m a poor student with no money for such an expensive hobby… actually I’m barely able to afford apartment right now. (Looking for a roommate, can’t find anyone) Since last time we met, I haven’t bought any food for my ever-hungry toys… but I do have abundance ammo for rifles. :-)
-
We should get a list of what firearms will be there and maybe some of us can bring extra ammo for them.
-
I'll be bringing my HK USP 45.

This particular range has rules against extending bayonet and, with a war cry, stabbing people….. ….. ;-)

Russian,
Have you been to Chabot?
They have signs that say no more then 2 rounds in a SKS due to to many sear failures.
Do they enforce it?

Never been there...but I know Dixon does not care about it. I usually have 10 round clips...and ranger doesn't care about it.

List I can bring:
Makarov (duh)
Beretta 92FS
Yugo M59 SKS
Yugo 24/47 Mauser (my new fav.)
Mosin M38
-
post list of amno required for this guns, for those who bring girls beer and amno :)
-
I have a good bit of the following ammo for the weapons I can bring:
9mm Makarov (Wolf)
9mm Luger (Wolf)
7.62x39 (Wolf)
8mm Mauser (1950's Yugo)
7.62x54R (a crap load of Polish and Albanian)
-
Do you give them one last wish before you shoot 'em?
A ciggarette mebbe?
Line 'em up against a wall?
What sort of weapon do you fire at them when you are shooting these guns?
You dont shoot 'em, you fire or discharge them and technically they arent even guns, but small arms.
:)
Pity it's half a world away, or I'd join you guys in a flash.

I'd love to do something like that. I have limited experience with handguns but a lot of shotgun and rifle experience.

I'm definately interested. I have an 1896 45-70 Springfied that needs some room to stretch it's legs. I have a Ruger MKII 6 7/8" bull that I shoot at my local indoor range regularly, that I would bring as well. I might even bring my Air Force Condor PCP air rifle. Supposed to be capable of 1" groups at 100 yards.
May I suggest:

I haven't been to these yet, but it's a heck of a lot closer than Dixon, for me and Wolfala at least.
-
The chabot gun club is not in dixon, and I really doubt most of the people going will want to shoot on a 1000 yard range.
I am flexable on the location, but Salinas seems a bit far.

Yeah I missed the Chabot range for some reason. Looks good to me!

1000 yards is ok for hideout/backup style small handguns, but for full size service auto sized guns (like my Glocks!), I prefer a little more room to challenge myself! :D
-
The sights on my 45-70 are adjustable to 2000 yards!
-
LOL come on guys, some of the shooters will be old. Maybe not even able to see a target at 1000plus yards!
(hell I have never shot at anything past 150, I doubt I could hit a 1000 yard target)((I bet I could see it though))
-
Goob listed off most of the places we can shoot.
(you missed the dirtball range in Sal leandro, if it is still open, but it is small dirty and next to the dump. They also wont let you shoot anything but softnose ammo on the rifle range. The one upside for the place is no one shoots outside so you are your own rangemaster. Course the last time I was there is was falling down. If this is of interest I can find out if it is still around)
Ok so lets get a place chosen so we can start tossing around dates.
A: Chabot gun club Hayward.
B:Laguna Seca Rifle & Pistol Range, , Salinas,
C: Terra Vee Rod & Gun Club, Cupertino, ******* Note this is a private range, we need to confirm we can shoot there without a member to get us in***********88
D: Los Altos Rod and Gun Club, Los Gatos, ((( I hear this place has a pit that you can shoot stuff like water jugs in, never shot there so not sure)))
E: Field Sports Park, County of Santa Clara Parks & Recreation, San Jose
F: The range in Dixon. (do not remember what it was called, but I liked the rifle range here, since there where no range masters it would be easier to check targets etc)
My preference is A, with F and D being my second and third choices
I will bring my Sig 220 .45ACP and my M1A .308/7.62 Nato with a bunch of ammo.
-
I vote A, B or D.
-
I vote for A b/c being in the southbay is a trek going way the hell up north.
Unless there is an outdoor range that is worth the trip.
Wolf
-
I'll take F.
-
Chabot Gun club looks to be the clear choice.
We will meet at:
http://www.chabotgunclub.com/
As for dates this will have to be a Saturday or Sunday thing. Obviously not this weekend because of the superbowl.
So these are next few non-superbowl weekends:
Feb: 11/12 - This one looks good to me!
Feb: 18/19
Feb: 25/26
March: 4/5
Chabot's weekend hours are: 9AM to 5PM
Cost is $14 per person
I'm thinking we meet later in the morning 11am or so shoot for a while and then go meet somewhere close to eat and drink and shoot some bull.
-
I would prefer a sundays, but can do either.
I would also prefer the 18/19 or 25/26 because it will give me a chance to get more .308 here.
-
I can do any weekend in Feb, except Feb 4-5 and March 4-5 b/c of parents comming to down.
Also, I don't have a gun or rifle, so is it enough just to buy ammo for someones spare?
Wolf
-
Prefer Saturday's and I should be free the next few weekends. FYI on the Los Altos Gun Club range. It's the one I go to most of the time. They do have a 40yrd and 100yrd "tin can" range. It's a nice range and the range officers really have their act together.
-
any sunday, saturdays im not sure
-
Grun has posted the place, everyone come back with what dates he posted work best.
-
Any day will work.
(FYI, Dixon costs 8$ for none-members)
-
Sunday Feb 19th looks to be good for ppl so far - lets get some consensus around that so we can plan our schedules.
-
I can swing it.
-
wolf...
you can pretty much go to any gun range with no gun...and shoot
us gun owners enjoy people shooting our guns..
If you buy/bring ammo..you are a great guy
Me personally I liek the gun ranges with no rnage patrol...the 1 shot a second cramps my style...how are you supposed to practice the mozambique triple tap?
The range South of Beale AirForce Space has a 300 yd range...and all the rapid taps you can squeeze
im in the process of moving so this month is wacked for me..and its my birthday weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeee
-
That sunday is good for me.
-
Any weekend in Feb works for me.

We all going to meet at Chabot, or meet in other locations and carpool?
-
Just a random thought... I was thinking it might be a fun ride on the motorcycle. What are the legalities carrying guns on motorcycles? Not that I'm going to do it, my 45-70 is too precious to me to risk, but I'm still curious.

Does that make more sense, is parking an issue at chabot?

I'm curious about that too as I ponder trying motorcycles sometime this year.

They have a large parking area, but I have been there when parking was scarce. With 10 plus people it may make sense to try and carpool. Its a long walk from any alternate parking lol.
-

I think it' fine as long as it is in a locking container, and the ammo is in another container. I would not do it with anything a Policeman can see though, Like hangun in a locking bock in a saddlebag.
Rifle is just asking to be pulled over and questioned for an hour.

I'm coming up from Santa Cruz if anyone wants to carpool.
Can I bring a friend or is it AH'ers only?
-
Sure, you can bring friends.
-
It also may be easier to meet up in fremont first, and pack into as few cars as we can, and then everyone follow me (or anyone else who has been there)
I know the first time I went I missed the turn off.
-
Guys
Pop in with if you can go or not so Grun can get a head count?
-
I'm a go. I live in South San Jose. Meeting and regrouping in Fremont is just fine with me.
-
Aw man, I wanna go! Being in Texas when all the action's out there is no fun. And here I'm old enough to do it, too. :cry
Damn it, I'm going to have to get out there one day. :D
-
I'm also in. I'm in the Campbell area so I can also carpool or just meet in Fremont.
-
I will post a map to the place we can meet in fremont that will have enough parking in a few days.
I will be using my truck, since the Jeep wont fit more then two people with any cargo.
My truck can take 4 people, but that will mean either the rifle cases in the bed or on peoples laps.
-
I will be on vacation that week.

Give me a shout I go out to backwoods trap twice a week.
Its in Little elm tx off of hwy 380 between mckiney and denton.
The name says trap but they have a great 100yd rifle range too:huh
-
I usually shoot at the Fort Worth Trap and Skeet Club on the weekends. It'll be more often when the days get longer.
I've heard of Backwoods but have never been out there. What's the place like?
-
I'll bring Winchester 94 .45, Mosin-Nagant M1938 and a 12 gauge shotgun. I can also bring my 1860 army colt. It's a modern replica and fully functional, but I'm not going to to fire it. If I'll bring it, it'll be just for show.
BTW, I do have ammo for the Winchester and the shotgun, but I don't have any 7.62x54 for the Nagant. The guy at Big 5 told me that they are out and that all of it is in Iraq :)
-
mielta, I have a bunch of Polish 7.62x54R ammo I can bring. Whoever wants to shoot some of it can reimburse me. It's cheap but accurate ammo.
-
Cool. Bring it with you.
BTW, Grunherz and I are planning to create a new web site "Bayarea AH Shooting Club" or something to this effect. I'll try to do it today and when it's ready let's move this thread over there.
Since I'm pretty sure that this is not a one time deal, and we'll be doing it over and over, I'm planning to make it permanent. All the events will be documented there.
-
This is gonna be great. :)
Lets get thsoe confirmations in.

Awsome! I would love to have a group to go shoot with on a regular basis. Hell we could even have a little 100 yard compition!
-
Great idea!
-
I noticed today while driving on freeway little bright color signs advertising GunShow which will be this weekend….. I think it’s hold in Vallejo. I don’t know if this is too much for one day (probably is) but we can met there, and then after GunShow drive to the range….

ok dudes, we have a new home. Go to...
http://www.northoltwing.com/shootingclub/phpBB2
...register and let's rock and roll
For now, I'm using the northoltwing.com domain. I'll get something appropriate tomorrow (any suggestions for a name of the domain are welcome).
The main page is missing for now, only the forum is available. I'll put some skeleton later tonight, but will have to wait for Ramzey to make it pretty.

Awesome mietla, thanks for setting the website up so quickly!

for pistols, right?
Qualifcation for the Vermont Militia in 1787 was 5 consecutive shots in 5", standing; in 5 minutes... at 200 yards with a flintlock.

I've added a skeleton front page, Ramzey will finish it hopefully over the weekend. Can't you swing it Ramzey?

Is that for reals? Got a source? 200 yards offhand with a big bellybutton gun is extremely difficult.
-
Yup. Source for the above is Boston's Gun Bible.
Just to satisfy myself that marksmanship of this level was routine for American Riflemen as far back as the revolutionary war I did a bit of digging. You may find this interesting:
To make sure that the message was loud and clear Washington ordered a spectacular demonstration of the abilities of his riflemen. With a huge crowd of spectators on hand Washington publically had his men fire at a seven inch diameter pole from 200 yards. The riflemen riddled the pole. Others fired at 250 yards. Some companies, at quick march, hit seven inch targets at 200 yards. By the middle of August there were 1400 riflemen facing the British in Boston. With their hunting shirts they stood out from the mass of soldiers as something elite.
Link: http://www.americanrevolution.org/riflemen.html
Data point: For the last 200 years there has been a steady decline in training and expectations of American Military Rifle Skills. Such suberb skills from bygone days were not only possible, they were considered normal.. and in truth, todays combat soldier with his rudemntairy marksmanship training and small caliber mouse gun carbine would be out-ranged and out-gunned by a company of Revolutionary War Riflemen.
These days, if it's beyond 100 yards it's considered 'mortar, artillery or 240/ma-duce territoy'. Pitiful.

Ye' gads. I feel so... inadequate.

LOL.. in those days those men's rifles were their most valuable & prized posessions, and accuracy and efficiency were instrumental in effectively putting food on the table as well as defense against brigands or indians.
'Necessity breeds efficiency and skill'... and since rifle skills are no longer rudementary requirements for survival in todays world, the 'handed down' knowlege and training from an early age in those skills went away long ago.
Regardless, with any rifle; exceptional accuracy and speed ONLY come with determined practice and experience.. lots of it. The more you shoot, the better you get. Simple, really. Just takes mounds of ammo and time. ;)
-
OK, so now that I've discovered some outdoor ranges within a reasonable drive I'm ready to buy a rifle, as I don't want to put too many rounds through my 45-70.
I'm looking for a semi-auto in .223 or 7.62x39. The local shop carries the following.
http://www.kel-tec.com/su-16ca_rifle.htm
http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Firearms/FAProdResults?function=famid&famid=22
http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Firearms/FAProdView?model=5806&return=Y
They also have some used SKS's and the like.
The kel-tec is cheap, light and takes 10 round mags stock. Takes AR15 20-30 round mags as well.
The Ruger seems better quality, nice wood, solid feel and is avilable in .223 or 7.62. Costs more and only accepts 5 rd mags.
I presume there's some cheap russian and chinese weapons that might work well. I don't want to spend a ton, but I do want something that will last for quite a while if properly cared for.
Any advice?
-

Tons. ;) Nothing on that list is worth a damn. They look kewl tho.
A former military weapon will out last anything made for the 'sportsmans' market. If you want a semi- auto that's magazine fed with the 'evil black rifle look' there is nothing better or more accurate in it's price range than a 'Sporterized' FAL. These are available from Century Arms, Enterprise Arms and DSA. California legal versions are available.
A bit pricier but very efficient at the designated task.. the M1 or M1A's.
If it's a bolt action rifle that'll shoot better than most riflemen and do it for the next 100 years or 10,000 rounds of ammo check out the M-39's at http://www.gunsnammo.com NO FFL required, will ship direct to your door.
Cheers!

I really don't want to spend more than about $600 maybe up to $800. Looks like the FAL goes for about $1500 and up.
This is just for fun at the range. I don't want a .22, if anyone made a .177 in semi-auto I would be interested as well.
I want a semi-auto in .223 or 7.62.
It has to be CA legal.
It has to accurate.
It has to be reliable.
10 rd mags are a plus.
It must be reasonably light.
I want a new gun or at the least a VERY nice used one.
I want some nice iron sights.
hmmm, what else.... I'm sure I'll think of something.
I really haven't seen anything other than the Kel-Tec SU-16CA and Ruger Mini-14 that fit the bill. But I'm open to options.
-
g00b, I placed an order for an SU-16CA. They are hard to get right now. I've been waiting a few weeks with no word. If you see one, grab it. After a lot of research, it's the best buy for a .223, especially in CA. I would like to have an AR-15 but they are too dang neutered here in CA. If I want to make a loud boom I will shoot my Mauser or Mosin's. Oh, I have an SKS and it's fun to shoot, but 7.62x39 ammo is scarce right now.

Hangtime,
Those guns are all banned specifically BY NAME in Californiastan.
http://www.nraila.org/media/misc/ca.htm
-
goob...ill pm u later...i got some rifles for sale..im busy movn right now
.223's ; )
-
Hey, did you get the $$$ for the Glock magazines?
-
Goob
If you want acurate skip the mini-14 and 30, they will take ten round mags though.
those prices are stupid hight though Wally world had them at one time for about 450.
They are not acurate though.
You can get a FAL in cali, but it has to have the magazine release changed so the mag can not be removed. If you shop around you could prolly find one. (you may have to build it, but I hear thats not very hard.)
You can also get AR-15s, that have a fixed mag. They may be out of your price range though. They are also stupid and prolly have no resale value at all.
You want a great Semi Auto cheap? Check with your local rifle range, see if they are CMP affiliated, if they are ask if you can compete in a service rifle match and if they have loner rifles. If they do, I think you just have to do three matches and you can order a service grade M1 Garand from the CMP program for about 600 bucks.
Nothing you can buy in Cali can beat the gun or the price.
Here is the link (http://www.odcmp.com/Services/Rifles/m1garand.htm)
M1s are considered Curios and relics and you can buy and walk out with it the same day if you find one local but you wont for under a grand.
CMP will mail it to your door as long as you meet there requirments.
May take a bit of time but will be well worth it. The M1 Garand is the finest service rifle ever to see service.
Oh and 30-06 is a much nicer round then the rat round .223 or the commie 7.62 by 39mm

You can’t take all credit. I helped killing it too.
-
OK, the blame goes to the German K98, the Mosin Nagat, the laser sighted M-14 , and Goob's 120 year old cannon firing 45 breech loader that at 200 yards rose 2 feet above the pipper.
And the humans behind those. Photos link will follow shortly.

Had a great time gents. We need to do this more often. Sorry I had to bug out around noon, would have loved to down some brewski's and eat a cheeseburger afterwords. Btw, while at Ano Neuvo State Park I witness Elephant seal molestation of a young female and a few bull deathmatches, so it wasn't a bad trip afterall.

Yea, it was a tremendous time. Not sure if my shoulder hurts more from the Mosin Nagat or Mietla's slug slinging shotgun. But we had a pretty decent turnout - more then pictured actually.
Poor Mak though, with full knowlege of the Elephant Seal sex that awaited him, he still came out with us until 12 with his Mosin, left us with lots of ammo and then marched off to his doom courtesy of his wife.
What a gentlemen!
Great time guys!

Mietla, looks like a decent caliber yah got there... whut in hell wuz it? (note to self, don't piss THAT guy off)
The other guys in the photo musta had mouse guns, whut wif all dem tiny hoes..
Post pics of the guns plz! (except for GTO's sluttified lazer carbine.. I wanna cry evey time I see that goiter on the top of that fine weapon ;))
-
Wow, looks like a great time there guys. I really have to reconsider our travel plans. Perhaps a side trip into cali should be a definite option..... I'm limited in what part of my collection I bring. How is cali on a M1 Garand? I know my carbine has an evil bayonet lug on it.
-
Mav
The state of California still considers the M1 Garand a curio and relick so you can bring them in.
I am not sure on the M1 Carbine but I though you could still buy them here, maybe not though.
-
M1 Carbines are still legal...for now. I have one and will have to bring it next time.
-
That would be sweet, I have never shot a carbine.
-
GTO,
They really aren't much different from shooting a Ruger 10-22 except for sound. The carbine can be LOUD depending on loads. Really a very fun gun to shoot depending on ammo costs just like the RUGER MINI 14. I don't reload right now as it's way too much stuff to carry in the rig. I just have to choose carefully as I get to the storage location only once a year and can't carry too many in the trailer. They take up too darn much room and I don't consider the trailer to be all that secure. Our pug isn't very fierce either. :cry
-
It was FUN guys. My shoulder's only a bit sore from all the shooting :) Nice to know the 120 year old 45-70 still shoots better than I can. Highlights include shooting Funky's M1, Russian's SKS and Grun's HK 45.
I just bought a kel-tec su-16ca, starting the 10 day waiting list today. I'll be going to the Los Altos (http://www.losaltosrodandgunclub.com) range in 2 weeks to test it out. Anyone wanna go? The spot looks cool, and they have some "tin can" ranges. It's an awesome motorcycle ride, anyone have any info on carrying guns on motorcycles? Looks like as long as it's in a locked box it's ok?
g00b
-
g00b, I'll be picking up my SU16-CA on the 27th. I'll gladly join you at the Los Altos range; it's the one I normally go to. I'm looking forward to firing the Su-16. I just ordered a Burris Fullfield 2 Scope 3x9 scope for it.
-
I'm waffling on putting a scope on it. I have a couple lying around. I'll see how our groups compare. Yours with scope, mine with stock irons.
What's up with the tin-can range? We can bring stuff like siloettes or (duh) cans?
g00b
-
They just allow plastic bottles or cans up to a gallon size. You can fill them up with a water ther if you enjoy seeing the spray.

Its a real nice place $12.75 and no limit on time shoot all day if ya want to.
They have a nice pistol range and a really nice 50 and 100yd rifle range.
And there trap shooting is incredible.
Let me know Imwould meet ya out there any time.

Someone take pics of the "tin can range" for me please. I have been trying to convince our range to set up something like that but so far they resist based on the mess it will create. How do you set up the cans and bottles? best would be just setting them on the dirt bank.
