Title: How hard is it?
Post by: nirvana on February 05, 2006, 02:38:03 AM
How hard is it to stand up for 15 seconds each morning, put your hand over your heart, and at least listen to the Pledge of Allegiance?  200,000+ Soldiers in the middle east, facing death each day, and you can't stand for 15 damn seconds to at least think about how much you truly have?

Not sure about you older folks, my dad had to say the Pledge of Allegiance and a porayer each morning before class actually begun, that was in the 70's, and kids these days can't use a few seconds to salute those who give everything.

It is cooler nowadays to protest this and "go against" the flow.   Personally, those are the a**hats that should be exported by the bargeload.

I just got into with this really political guy.  He's saying we should support the people in the hoods that get shot at everyday.  It's their fault for enlisting in the forces.  I'm 50% sure i'm enlisting after high school.

He goes on to say how America sucks and he is living in poverty.  The guy just leased a $3000 TV set, and he just got a $1,500 computer.  Reason he's living in poverty?  Unknown:rolleyes:

I told him to go live in North Korea and say that Kim Jung Il sucks like he says Bush sucks freely here, see how fast he lasts.

To every working person that gives up 1/4 of their paycheck to pay for some crack potato with 5 children that won't try to better her life.

A compulsory pledge or oath is meaningless.

"How hard is it to stand up for 15 seconds each morning, put your hand over your heart, and at least listen to the Pledge of Allegiance?"

Sound pretty easy.  So, is this the only way that one can pay respect to our troops overseas and reflect on how lucky they are to be citizens in the United States?  Is it not possible that this constant routine has less meaning to some than it does others...regardless of their feelings toward our country and its soldiers?  Is it really necessary to quote an entire post when your reply appears directly after the post you quoted?  Enquiring minds want to know!

What effect would this have upon the troops out there?

I'd bet you're right, but that doesn't mean they should be exported.  Maybe I'm just taking your post too literally.

Perhaps it does nothing for the troops, and perhaps a compulsory pledge means nothing.  A constant flow of the same thing may lose it's effect as well, but could you also say that their protest is a reflection of the pledge?  Ironic?  A small bit of time during which you were doing nothing anyway.  Just sat there and stared at all the others looking at the flag.  Fight for the country and not for the government, simple as that.

Just think of all the booze the extra 8 hrs of pay will buy!  Certainly more than enough to make you forget about the 8 hrs of work.  :D

I am proud of who I am and where I came from, and I support the troops and what they're doing.

However...

I only ever said the pledge one time in high school, and it didn't make me more American than I am today. I don't need to stand up every day to talk to the flag to think about what I have. I do that on my own time.

I went to school in the states (Columbia, SC) for a couple years, and we had to stand up for that... I had a teacher try to force me to recite it with everyone else (I'm Canadian). Almost got the b--ch fired.

The pledge should be shortened to " I pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america with liberty and justice for all" The end.

How about just I pledging allegiance to the pole every morning?

Before you know it there is no more pole (you old folks _don't_ need to elaborate or explain the marvels of modern medicine).

Incredible.

The more I learn about America - the more I wonder.

Do you mean kids at school repeat it every morning?

In 1989 I spent 4 weeks in a Jesuitic Catholic school in St.Louis. We didn't attend morning prayer, because we were not Cathilic and not even all Atheist or Christian (we had Jews and Moslims in our delegation), but I never thought that our American schoolmates had to repeat anything like that...

Under "Evil Totalitarian Soviet Regime" (tm) we didn't have anything like that.

i remember in elementary school they told us that we didnt have to do the pledge. many didnt because they were lazy. i did every day (except when i had severe broncidus.) even today when i go to DEP meetings when we recite the Salor's Creed, i yell it as loud as i can and top it off with "HOOYA NAVY!!"

Did the pledge of allegiance every day until high school. If you were in boy scouts, you could do the salute.

Things were a lot better back then, you had pride in the country and the only thing people worried about is if it was going to rain on Friday.

Nowadays people can't wait to sue schools, get money, worry about terrorism, blame the country, etc.

I want a time machine. I want to go back to 88-89.
