Ever wondered what a "world series" would be like with other countries in it?
Well heres your chance! Round 4 of the IRB Rugby Sevens is going to played in Los Angeles, at the Home Depot Center on February 11th and 12th.
What is sevens? http://www.rugby7.com/7rules.asp
Basically its seven-a-side rugby, with games of 14 minutes. However instead of going to see a game, you go and watch a days worth of games as the teams battle it out to be top each round.
Heres the current rankings and teams involved:
OVERALL STANDINGS
DUB GEO NZL USA HKG SIN LON PAR OVERALL
Fiji 16 20 20 0 0 0 0 0 56
England 20 12 8 0 0 0 0 0 40
South Africa 12 12 16 0 0 0 0 0 40
Argentina 4 16 6 0 0 0 0 0 26

If you can get to it I'd recommend it highly, it usually involves very entertaining sport, great sportsmanship, alchohol, and loose barely clothed woman!

Which Home depot parking lot they having that game in?
-
Theres a pretty good reason american football and baseball are named 'world championship' and 'world series'
i would say without a doubt that no team outside the US could ever beat the team that won the WS or Super Bowl. None.
It would definitely be interesting seeing a game between the winner of the MLB WS and whatever the Japanese have for a champion, but I dont think it'd be a close game
that being said i'd definitely say europeans got us in football, rugby, and cricket.

Fijians are on a roll but the game to watch is always the Samoans vs the Tongan's.

The Sumo wrestlers may be really huge in the circumference department, but they're still pretty short.

You'll get your chance to find out. MLB players are going to the Olympics, at least thats what I got from the ads they ran on TV this Sunday. I was initially dead set against it but heck, look what its done for the level of play in Hockey and Basketball. Bring it on! If nothing else, at least we KNOW they'll be getting drug tested. :)

There's a small minority of us here that actually enjoy soccer & have been to cup games. Who knows, if there was actually some popular support for it, we could probably be really, really good... as opposed to just good enough to qualify for the world cup 8 times. Funny, we don't even have a national league. :)

Real Madrid are now the richest football club in the world, thanks in no small part to the marketing power of a certain David Beckham. The president of Real Madrid actually joked he would sell their stadium before selling David Beckham...
Real Madrid's income since 2002 has increased notably, from €152m to an expected €300m for the 2005/06 season. Of that, almost half is due to come directly from marketing. These figures might also help explain why Real Madrid signed so many stars, including superstar David Beckham. The England captain is still the best paid football player in the world, according to a report published by France Football magazine. Beckham tops the table ahead of his team-mates Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane. The three each have salaries of €6.4m and collect €200,000 a year in bonuses, but Beckham's commercial endorsements and image rights increase his takings to €25m a year..
Sept. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Real Madrid said it ended Manchester United's eight-year reign as the world's biggest soccer team by revenue after signing players such as David Beckham and Zinedine Zidane.
Madrid's revenue increased 17 percent to 275.7 million euros ($332.2 million) in the year ended June 30, according to accounts mailed to club members this week. Bloomberg News obtained a copy of the documents. United, which hasn't published figures for that period, had sales of 169 million pounds ($298.6 million) for the year through July 31, 2004.

We have a type of baseball game here, pesäpallo, but we're not arrogant enough to call the league a "World Series" or "World Championship" because it would be laughable...
We also have an ancient game called "Kyykkä" but nobody isn't interested about it... Maybe You could have it and have a "Kyykkä World Championship" :)

American style football I can understand when the NFL proclaims the winner of the Superbowl to be World Champions. Neither the Canadian league nor the league in Europe could hope to compete with the NFL.
The rest of the sports like Hockey, Baseball, Basketball etc....I think it's kind of ridiculous to call the league champions *World Champions*.
We actually agree on something Staga.....wonders never cease! :D

We have world championships for anything & everything. We have world poker championships, world pumpkin tossing championships (records past 4000 ft!), Women's Softball College World Championships, Junior Men's Amatuer Softball World Championships, Halo (yeah, the video game...) World Championships, World Inline Hockey Championships...
hey, we'll host it, if the other countries don't show up, that's their problem. :)
to Furball: Italy & the Czech's in our group? Yeah, we're going home early... unless somebody screws up majorly like that poor Columbian in '98. Damn I felt sorry for that guy. Oh yeah, and thanks for shooting me down on Sunday. Upped with squaddies since I was supposed to be down anyways, and on the run bounced a 262 in a 38 and set him on fire in the first burst. It's a strange day when Furball opens up the path to happiness... :noid

Dood you need to pay attention...it's called the Super Bowl...no one calls it a world championship. We tried a Soccer league back in the 70's. It had pele and alot of the other soccer superstars, it folded because no one here gave a chit. So feel free to knock yourself out with soccer. We use it here for little boys not athletic enough for sports.

Is that their revenue or operating income?
In the NFL there is quite a difference between the two
in 2004 according to Forbes
The highest ranked Washington Redskins Revenues was 245 mil with a 69.6 operating income
While the lowest is the Arizona Cardinals revenues is 131 with a -4.9 operating income

I've watch rugby, and I like it just as much as I like American football. I'm also smart enough to know the difference between real football and what we've got over here. I was pointing out what these threads usually fall into. Americans defend football, Europeans think Americans are strange for defending American football...painting with a broad brush, I know, but it's how it looks to me.
Consider it the opinion of an uneducated youth. :) I like rugby and football just as much as I like American football.
But I like baseball more. :aok
-
I actually like American football: I just find it difficult to sit through all the delays: it's OK with friends at bar but I can't watch it at home. I've never been a big football (soccer) fan. I will watch big internationals but other than that is does nothing for me.

You have had your moments in rugby at least.
The US are the olympic champions in rugby and have been since 1924. The US beat France in the final at the Paris olympics. Of course that was the last time rugby was an olympic event, and besides France, the only other rugby team to turn up and compete was Romania. But a win is a win.

I always remember the 1994 Soccer World Cup, hosted by the USA. I think they did a pretty good job. America always excels in the organisation and showbusiness aspects of events like this. I only had two criticisms: One was that they didn't allow the players down in Florida to take water drinking breaks. Memories of Jack Charlton being banned from the sidelines for offering his players water... The other slight problem was that at some games, the grass had not been cut short enough.
The officials were very generous with regard to what the colours referee and linesmen could wear. "As far as we're concerned, they can wear whatever they like" - Des Lynam :lol
Furb - wasn't it the 1994 WC whose final was settled by a penalty shootout, with Roberto Baggio missing his?

With all due respect to those teams, the world rankings are a bit off. Well done to the USA team mind, they are a good side. But the rankings take into account results from competitive games, such as world cup qualifiers. European teams, as i have already pointed out, have a MUCH tougher time in the qualifying stages as they play much higher quality teams.
And yes Beet1e, the 1994 world cup final finished by brazil beating italy on penalties, baggio missed his. I was 10 years old at the time and remember playing Fifa on his super nintendo after the final whistle and replaying the italy vs brazil game :D

I think that was in '98, and my father-in-law (from Italy) about had a stroke!! Couldn't believe he missed it.

The problem with rugby is, no forward pass!

Ahh, the memories from the '94 Cup.... being dumped at Disney World for the day while my parents went off to see.. Holland I think it was, play. Trapped in line for the Thunder Mountain Railroad, in moderately warm Florida weather... with a few hundred tourists that most definately do not have the same love of deoderant that Americans do. It was an eye opening, and watering, experience... never did ride that coaster.
Flying back to Tampa this weekend. I get to drink with some of my old coaches, a bunch of brits that played for the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Been looking forward to this for years :)

I think that was in '98, and my father-in-law (from Italy) about had a stroke!! Couldn't believe he missed it.
France won it in 98, Italy were in the 1994 world cup final

The problem with rugby is, no forward pass!
if you think about it.. thats what makes it great, it means the players have to carry it forwards - more tackling etc.

Don't mind Aussie rules, but most of the time it's absololute chaos. Sometimes moments of magic emerge from the mess.
The Ladies love Aussie Rules though. It's something about the players arms I'm told.

The French were so pissed off they lost that they made sure Rugby was dropped.
Sevens was up for inclusion for Beijing but didn't make it.
The US does reasonably well in Rugby and has qualified for the last two World Cups. They usually have some big, impressive athletes but very few players of true world stature (Dan Lyle, Mike Hercus and Luke Gross coming to mind as exceptions).
USA is currently ranked 13th (out of the 50 ranked countries: I think IRB recognizes 80-odd national Unions).
