All,
So my nephew has heard me talking about AH (and WB) for about a decade now, and he surprised me this week and asked how he could play.
Obviously he needs a stick. One with a throttle, rudder control (via twisty seems ok with the kids these days), and a hat, along with a bunch of programable buttons.
Logitech offers a $30 stick here (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2221,CONTENTID=6954) that seems to fit the bill perfectly.
Can anyone here tell me if there are any problems with this stick?
Thanks,
Llama

Not recommended,,,,,,I had numerous problems with logitech! Best lower cost sticks Saitek.... by far! barring that I would look for a used CH or Saitek on eBay

Logitech has had extreme problems the last couple of years with quality.
The pots spike, or the hats quit after a few months, etc.
Better to spend that 30 $, find a MS sidewinder Prec 2 on ebay for about that.
Or, pony up a few more and get an x52. Been hearing lots of good things about it with few problems.

NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Noo!
No!
No.
Do not EVER buy logitech, EVER.
-
no...i've had 2 and same problems with both...can't keep it calibrated and it has real spiky pots...do not buy
-
alot of people bash the logitec, but mine was ok to learn on.
yeah i did take it back to best buy every 4-6 months for a free new one (God bless that replacement waranty for $7)
i actually love the feel of that stick, and it's ergonomics.
just my anecdote.
-
din't say it wasn't good to learn on and i love the ergo too....and the button layout....but spiking when you are on the edge of a stall sucks

I have had 3 logitech sticks. I will never own another one. If they aren't spiking right out of the box they will be spiking within a couple of weeks. All 3 of mine went like this (usually the rudder was first to go).
For just about the same cost you can pick up a Saitek EVO. It has everything you need. Twisty rudder, hat switch and several programmable buttons. Been using the same one for a year now with no problems.
Saitek EVO, best bang for your buck if you are looking for an inexpensive stick. Just my $.02
cheers,
RTR

logitech sticks are the devil. Wal Mart has the saitek st290 pro sticks for around $20.00. I bought one a while back before I got my X52 setup. BTW... you can get the X52 refurb setup directly from Saitek (http://store.yahoo.com/saitekusa/recprod.html) for 69.00. I bought 2 of them.

Have to agree. LOVED the feel and layout of the stick. HATED the innards!!

Just say no
Had 2 of um. Self calibration fancy doo daa hates Aces High. You end up calibrating the &^%$# thing every flight and thast before the twisty gives out on one side.
Saitek evo same price ...yes
-
I'm with everyone else.... Started in AH in August, so I bought the Pro at Target for $30... Already going bad... Saitek Evo at Radio Shack is like $10 more and will last longer...
-
That was my 1st stick and I'd recomend against it. Go with a Saitek for the same price.

Last couple of years??
I had a Logitech Extreme 3D back in Air Warrior and I wouldnt wish that POS on my ....... wait I WOULD wish that POS on my worst enemies. Then I'd have a chance to shoot them down. :)
I tried the regular Extreme. I tried the Extreme 3D. I tried the Extreme 3D Force Feedback. I've tried at one point or another, every stick Logitech makes I think (because I kept swapping them on the returns). THEY DONT MAKE A GOOD STICK AND HAVENT EVER AS FAR AS I CAN TELL.
Logitech cranks out tons of CHEAP computer accessories. Nothing durable, nothing dependable, but affordable. Great for the keyboard or mouse on your desktop you use to balance your checkbook, check your email once a day, and maybe do your taxes. Not what you want for a joystick.

My Logitech Extreme 3D Pro has the best ergonomics I've ever seen -- stick fits me perfectly.
However, gotta admit it tends to lose the right rudder. Have to do a lot of recalibrating sometimes to make it behave.
I looked at a bunch Saitek again but to me they're kinda big and gawky. Some reviews here and there on the net were not universally favorable either. Different strokes for different folks.

Halo, you might not want to do this and you might not believe this is possible, but....
I had a wingman like you do, that kept losing right rudder. In fact even recalibrating didn't help. It simply wouldn't move all the way over on the input. The stick would turn but only 1/3 the total input. Full left, almost no right. [EDIT: that is, the stick gave full motion but would not register full depression]
So I am about to say "screw it" but I decide to open the sucker up instead. My urge to vomit aside, looking at the crappy interior design showed me two things: The cheap-o plastic pot that works for the twisty action is about halfway up the handle on the stick. You can open this up without dismantling the base. Inside there, the pot has a peg sticking out one side (I *think* it points to the left). This is a free-turning pot, and the stick turns around it. The rudder is twisted by the pot's pin fitting into a notch inside one half of the handle. As you turn the handle around the pot, the notch pushes it back and forth. Not the best system. My pot wasn't even properly installed or aligned. I put it back and it worked.
The second thing it showed me was that the reason my trigger stopped working was because it came (from the factory) with the wire to the controller board pinched horribly by the twist-action pot. I think it got trapped between the halves of the handle somewhere, and almost pinched in half.
When I put it back together I made sure the wire wasn't pinched. This got my full rudder motion back and my trigger.
2 important things to note:
1) There is a VERY tricky spring to put back in juuuuuuust right if you want your twisty action to spring back to neutral. Make sure you get it on right. You'll be annoyed with getting it back in, but it's do-able
2) Giving you back your full rudder twist-motion does NOT negate the fact that sitting still without touching the stick at all it will spike full throttle, full rudder, in both directions, and moving any axis of the stick front/back or left/right will spike rudder and throttle up and down no matter what their settings are at -- the circuits controlling the signals are shyte!
You CAN fix the rudder input problem, but not the spiking problem.
-
Thanks, Krusty, for that detailed reply and fix. I thought a couple times about opening the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro and messing with it, but then ... I fiddled with it some more and it eventually shaped up.
I don't dispute the adverse comments about Logitech, and I don't play enough to give the Extreme 3D Pro anything like the workout it receives from people who use it a lot.
Nevertheless, in all fairness, I thought I should pipe up and give Logitech credit due for serving me well in light play over several years.
I also have Logitech keyboards on both my computers and they have served flawlessly for many years. I don't use many of the extra programming features, but the few I do work fine.
Logitech's paramount appeal to me with both joysticks and keyboards is its excellent ergonomics which suit my preferences very well.
