Demonstrators are attacking a norwegain military base in northern Afghanistan. The attack has gone on for seven hours now, and some of our troops are lightly injured. The demonstrators are attacking with small arms and hand grenades. 5 of them have been shot dead but for the most part "we" are shooting rubber bullets and tear gass.
Dutch F-16's and American A-10's are loitering in the area and ha fired warning shots.
Re-enforcements have been flown in by helicopter. If it gets worse the troops and AC will will be allowed to open fire and chase them away or wipe them out. For the moment they are trying to calm things down first.

I`m sure proud that Muslims are a peacefull people. Otherwise things might get violent.

By small arms do they mean rocks and pistols, or rifles, etc?
I bet the 5 dead protestors were ones with rifles/RPG's.

Rifles, pistols, rocks and hand grenades are used (with little effect it seems).

little effect to you sitting at home safely behind your computer. ask the guys taking the incoming rounds with regard to the effect.

The Danes have their share in the capitol atm. Denmark and Norway are at the top of their hit list for the moment. The EU in general seems to upset the muslims.

Fortunately Norwegian soldiers are trained in peacekeeping and have a bit more nerve in situations like this. A large body count broadcast on Arab television is not what we need right now.

While I do agree, if the demonstrators really want to get in, they will have to resort to violent force.

If it's one group of soldiers I'd want holding back a mob, without killing them all, it's the Norwegians..
I'd prefer the Russians take care of it, but of course, we don't need a large body count on Arab television again..

I love how the press still calls them demonstrators after they burn down buildings.

Here's part of the scoop.
KABUL (AP) - Thousands of rioters clashed with police and NATO peacekeepers across Afghanistan on Tuesday in demonstrations against the publication of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, officials said. One person was killed and scores wounded.
Norwegian troops fired on hundreds of protesters outside their base in Maymana, a city in the northwest, after the demonstrators shot at them and threw grenades, said provincial Gov. Mohammed Latif. One of the demonstrators was shot dead while two others were wounded, he said.
A spokeswoman for NATO's peacekeeping force, Squadron Leader Annie Gibson-Sexton, said troops used tear gas against the protesters, but could not confirm that shots had been fired. She said there were no reports of injuries among the Norwegian troops.
Police officer Abdul Qadier said about 200 protesters threw stones at the base. Two women who were passers-by were hurt when they were hit by stones. They were taken to hospital, along with several of the demonstrators who were affected by tear gas, he said.
In the capital, Kabul, police used batons to beat stone-throwing protesters outside the Danish diplomatic mission office, as well as in another riot near the offices of the World Bank.
An Associated Press reporter saw police arrest several people, many of whom were injured.
Security has been tightened in the past 24 hours in Kabul, home to some 3,000 foreign diplomats, aid workers and others. Police have set up barricades and peacekeepers have been patrolling constantly.
Some 3,000 protesters threw stones at government buildings and an Italian peacekeeping base in the western city of Herat, but no one was injured, said a witness, Faridoon Pooyaa.
Provincial administrator Asiluddin Jami said police fired warning shots to prevent the demonstrators from entering the buildings and the base.
Police in about half a dozen other towns and cities reported thousands of people protesting, but there were no other reports of violence.
Demonstrations have been held across Afghanistan since late last week, with the size of the crowds constantly swelling. On Monday, four people were killed and at least 19 wounded during clashes, including one outside Bagram, the main U.S. military base.
The cartoons were first published in a Danish newspaper in September, and more drawings have recently been printed in other European papers, either to illustrate the controversy or demonstrate support for freedom of the press.
Islamic tradition bars any depiction of the prophet, favourable or otherwise, to prevent idolatry. Protests have erupted in several Muslim countries in the past week.

lol. IMO it more than helps the evolutionary proponants case. It shows how environmental influences (religion) can take an upright walking mammal equipped with the opposable thumb (Muslim) and turn it into a mindless, violent bent hamster legged rodent (lemming).
Unless you want "intelligent design" to take the credit. In which case enjoy the "victory" as it doesn't say much for the so called intelligence behind the design ;)

Im sure that if the A-10 fired a salvo above the heads of the demonstrators they would hear that gatling gun rip.... even the F-16's gun would be heard I guess. I don't have any precise info on how they did it.
Maybe the F-16 wrote "dance *****es" in the sky while the A-10 fired infront of the demonstrators :D

My question was more sarcasm then anything else. Was thinking that a warning shot from the gatling would not be considered more of scare th living crap out of everyon and everything.

They'd hear the rounds impact before the 30mm love cannon belches at them... either way, fecal matter can be found in their undies afterwards.
