Title: intercept mission tonight
Post by: storch on February 07, 2006, 05:56:31 PM
we will be intercepting the expected allied wave of bombers and fighters.  we have information that they intend to bomb the brothel and schnapps factory.  furthermore they intended to steal our fine french girls and exchange them for their buck toothed bearded english ones.  this is intolerable ( i can't be expected to have a gf named percival yaknowwatimean)  we will need a maximum effort.

the following are required

FW190A5 two and four cannon configuration
Bf109G2 single popguns for fighter v fighter
Bf109G6 with gondolas for interception

yup that slight deficiency will need to be rectified prior to the combat tour or it will be a flop.  I'm not going to participate in that with the current mismodelled LW set.

They seemed pretty dangerous to us bombers :)

I dont know how the handling matched up at alts..can someone compare historically for me?

Umm...the LW aircraft did perform poorly relative to the USAAF aircraft at high altitude. I'm sure HTC is terrified that you might not participate.

were B-17s and B-24s bomber formations cruising at max throttle?  bombers on the way to target should be in cruise mode throttle only

We were not at max throttle.  We flew at 45 manifold for formation keeping purposes.

Miltary power for the 24's draw 48.5" MPat 2700 rpm
normal cruise                              46"MP at 2550
max. cruise                                 35.5"MP at 2325

But you knew this aleady.

And your point gear....assuming you even have one?

He asked if we were cruising at max throttle, I answered him with our man setting....the rpms were not adjusted.

I'm not a big historical information buff on the intricate settings used, so I won't play your game there.

I've enjoyed trying to recreate some of the spirit of those times in the AvA, and that's as far as I'll go with it.

***Edit-- I also want to add that I knew we were going to meat on the table going it at 17k, but I also knew that having the bomb group there gave guys in fighters on both sides incentive and a reason to mix it up and have fun.

Not nearly as horrible as modeled here, none of them would have survived

I would tend to agree, but how do we really know? There are some acknowleged issues with the A-5, A-8 and the G-14, but for the most part the LW aircraft are correct IMO. The person I was responding too prefers to use hyperbole instead of finding facts to back up the frequent outlandish accusations of bias against everything Axis. The point of this thread was, the LW planes did perform poorly at the high alts of USAAF bomber missions, that is undeniable.

I'd ask you to back that up, but I'm sure you will refuse. Now run along back to neverland.

In this war, the Axis are winning the air war, however, their bombing damage has been minimal. Allies are winning the strategy war with stragetic bombing.
