Title: What keeps you playing Aces High?

there must be something keeping thousands playing night after night, day after day.

Every year I re-sub and play all summer and then I go away to school, where usually our servers are severely hampered for online gaming (basically playing games online were no-no). This year they got better and now that I can connect, I want to come back but I was worried of getting frustrated again. Then AvA came out and now I can't wait to get back into the skies!

I like the crowd, the fun, and most importantly, the 109F-4

Post by: Kurt on February 10, 2006, 08:25:06 AM: Well, I don't play as much as I used to, but still, for 15 bucks, I figure if I show up for FSO and Squad night each week I'm getting about 16 hours for my 15 bucks... What else is this much fun and costs less than a dollar an hour?

Besides, I get to read these boards, which are often more entertaining than the best movies that Hollywood can throw at us.

All-n-all its about you guys, the players and my squad. Thats why I get so aggitated when there are 30 people in range and no one is talking... Single player mode sucks, INTERACT WITH YOUR TEAM!

1. The 412th FS "Braunco Mustangs" - The Best P-51 squad in AH.
2. The ever distant promise of a shining star called earth... errr.. I mean "Combat Tour"
3. I still have one of those "discount" accounts from back in the day :D

I tried "X2 the threat" trying to get back into the old "Elite" days... but the AI is stupid and fights that way

Real PPL just do to many unpredictable things, some stupid, some cool, some just dam funny....

I whish the EULA had an addiction warning... its a drug and we all know it

Last tour was the first time I ever chalked up more than 100 in any kite/any tour since I started over 3 years ago.

Love the banter, the ch. 200 (beats oprah, jerry springer, jeremy kyle(UK)) any day!

Being in a good squad helps, have good cross section in ours, Cans, Yanks, Scans, English and Irish. The banter there is class too.

My love for flying is the main reason though, never managed it in RL, eyesight let me down and being an avid fan of this avaiation era helps too!

So true, mussie! After AH no single player flight sim, for how good it can be, seems the same again... real opponents are the best thing you can hope to fight against!

That was the reason I downloaded this game, I'm an avid aviation fan and I wanted to try what it's like to fly with/against other people. Then I discovered the wonderful, crazy community that this game has and I thought it was well worth my 15 bucks. :)

just kidding, I love watching any of my squaddies die especially if its my fault :D.

Seriously, I think the rare 1v1 or 1v2 fights keep me in the game for awhile. Flying the P47 75% of the time doesn't leave much room for fighting the hordes, so I find myself enjoying the game less and less on maps that cater to that style.

Typical freaking +Nomad. A perfectly good bird, and look at it now. And honestly, it looks GOOD compared to most of them when they're done with them. At least it still appears to have both outer wings and both tailbooms. Can't say the same for the rudders and stabilizers.

Then there is always those guys complaining, whining, and everones favorite of being accused of cheating. Always gives me a laugh.

3) I fly for the squad, especially when it appears my "country" does not have it's s*** together.

4) A fascination with learning new things about WW2.

5) Playing a game in which you interact with people all around the world while you are comfortable at home.

Next I would put my squad, the CAF, or Cactus Air Force. There isn't a better squad in the game, imo. Also, Nazgul my first squad:

Post by: Hajo on February 11, 2006, 03:59:33 PM: Why I play. When first I started playing AH it was a refreshing switch from AW. AW had grown stale. Nothing new to hold me aside from the many friends that I had fought with and against the many years I was there.

AH offered a new challenge and let's face it better graphics and FMs then AW could ever hope for. No one was going to put any money into AW it was left to wither and die. I read about AH and dloaded and immediately liked the new challenge. Then lot's of old adversairies and squaddies started showing up one by one and after the learning curve I was hooked.

But most of all I've met and made many new friends, such as Wilbuz, Yancyan, GTR, and Saw just to name a few. And met new squadmates such as Shamus,Vati, EDO and the rest. So now it's competition and interaction between friendly enemies and my squadmates. The virtual flying is great, the gameplay unfortunately is what we make it. And the Community believe it or not, not only has gotten bigger, but also better in most instances. Ya....there's still the chestpounding wanna go to the DA crap for those who take it wayyyyyyyyyyyy to seriously. But by in large it's just plane fun (pardon the pun) !

oh, and bat, watch your six, ill be lookin for payback after ya blasted my plane out of the sky:furious j/k. think you were in an il2, that was also on fire....not really sure, but musta made a nice snap shot. the il2 was the only thing i saw near my six and was low 3-4 oclock. hope the typh and 205 driver thanked you:) ~~vast.~~

It's a great release ..kinda funny tho ..I notice some nights when I finish I am far more tense than I was when I logged on ..those classic last ditch defense fights for bases really are a blast :)

The fight over the Channel with Batfink the other day .. I really enjoy workin to a planes strengths and drawing the bandit into the envelope where my ride works best ;)

It reminds me *very* much of street racing ..it 'feels' the same. Sizing up an opponent as he engages is the same feeling I used to get pullin into a parking lot ..or watching a new car pull in and seein if the driver was up to the challenge or just a talker ;)

I also get a huge laugh outta those folks who insist on going on and on over Ch200 (ie: storch when I shot him down in the AvA the other day)
..I was rollin :)

Now and then I like to get into the team base capture thing and just jam on for a few hours.

It's great to be back ;)

Post by: FuBaR on February 12, 2006, 01:38:03 AM: To be honest... the game means alot because I spent a couple years practically growing up with most of you guys, which being one of the youngest of the group has been quite an experience. As funny as it seems AH taught me that having a more mature attitude in games is the better way to go(usually :p ) If you asked me this question a year ago I would have said it was the fights that keep me here and the constant fun, now its just the laughs and occasional fights, and people.

The game is great; but I have to disagree about ch.200 - that's the dumbest bunch of nonsense ever, I eventually just turned it off. It's the people that make this game both one of the best & worst experiences of online game play I've ever had. Some of the AHII guys regardless of country seem like really great people; others seem like they got molested as children.....How do fist fights not break out at the conventions? I know a couple of the threats I have recieved that were directed toward my family were enough to make me see red. If I ever go to one of those...I hope everyone is wearing "handle" name-tags.

Storch is easy, donno why he cries so much, its not like him dying is a rare occurance.

Post by: Arcades057 on February 12, 2006, 10:18:16 PM: I was diggin the game for a while, but it seems that the new people are always "noobs" no matter what they offer to the discussion and the little homeschooled kids who play all day run their mouths a little too much.

I liked Air Warrior. I'm more of a bomber guy than a fighter guy. The targets here consist of bombing an enemy base (and then taking crap from people because you bombed the base), bombing a city or AA factory or oil refinery (and then landing the sweet 4 perks for it), or flying for hours to bomb the HQ (and then landing the sweet 10 perks for it). I do like the GV combat with this game and that's why I've stayed as long as I have. Spawning in tank town and hearing the Panzers and Tigers ruining the city is great and it's one of my good memories from the game. Flying against people like Rival or Tex is also a good memory. It's rare when there's a 1v1 or 1v2 where all sides leave feeling like it was a good fight. Fights with Rival have always ended that way from Arcades or ME21, Rival.

I'll probably be back but for now the game just isn't fun anymore. Maybe if there were some real strat targets (think spitfactories from AW) it'll be a reason to come back.

But the BBS is still fun to look at sometimes.

Post by: mars01 on February 13, 2006, 06:33:57 AM: Pretty much these days only thing that keeps me here is my squad, Fester MA, OZ Kansas and TEh Donut! The rest of the maps are lavishly boring and I will log very little time when they are up.

Perfect example-- Saturday night Donut is up, fights are great in FT everyone is fighting. Rook Horde resets map, new map is up. So I up FT and every fight is a runner. Puke! Log off wait fot one of the above maps.

My boss threatens to cut my hours back if the country I am flying for loses the reset. My dog pees on the carpet everytime I get shot down by someone who started playing AH after I did. If I lose a perk plane, the bank said it would forcle on my house.

That is why I play AH. If I didn't, my life would go right down the toilet.

When I read this, my first thought was "I dont even know what AKCurly sounds like..."

Took me an hour before the three stooges came to mind.

And I guess thats part of my answer to the main question: I play to sooth the addcition. My wife consoles herself with the truth that there are much worse things to be addicted to, and at least she knows where I'm at!

The other part is a lifelong love of 40s aviation. Grew up with Baa baa Black SHeep and 12 O'clock high i(IN RERUNS....honest!) As a kid, built model planes and zoomed them around. As a high school kid in the 70s, when Ataris came home and computers hit the mainstream, my brother and I excitedly imagined being able to hook to computers together and fly against each other.

real life intervened, with college, training, starting a career, marriage, kids, starting a business, mortgage.....

And then my brother introduced me to Aces Crack 2 years ago. He'd played some AW, but I couldnt get into the time and cost back then....yet in 2004 the time was right, and I've flown (mostly badlly...) ever since.

Hokey as it sounds, AH is like seeing a childhood dream come alive.
