Title: Swimming

OK enough politics and airplane talk.

Are there any swimmers in here? If so how much do you swim a week and do you ever enter any big swims?

I have been swimming for about 3 years now and have decided to do something radical to motivate me to get out of bed for those 5:30 am workouts.

I have officially signed up an Escape from Alcatraz swim in August. One and a half miles in 60 degree water with waves and currents (hopefully no sharks).

Why don't some of you put down your guns and join me in this crazy race. Beer is on me for all that swim and finish.

I'm sorry, I did my (involuntary) mile swim already.  No sharks, but **** loads of jellyfish.

I avoid swimming in water that is not at least 80 degrees like it is the plague.

I've been in the ocean near SF.

1. I don't think it ever warmed up to 60.
2. No one I know would ever eat a fish that swam in the SF bay... let alone swim in it.
3. Have fun.

eek - lots of sharks around there. Do a google search on "stinson beach shark attack". Sometimes it happens in only 5ft of water, 50 yards from the shore.

I hear that the swim is in an area where there are not a lot of sharks. Plus there are going to be hundreds of people (I hope) swimming at the same time. So like those antelope smart enough to cross the river in the middle of the pack to avoid the crocks, I am hoping that the sharks do not key in on my fat ass.

I have to say I do look somewhat like a sea lion in my wetsuit though.

I swim 1-2 times a week for about an hour, but in the summer when the ocean is warm i swim a minimum of 30 mins every day even if the weather is junk.

That didn't slow down the sharks when the Indianapolis was torpedoed.

Like Richard Dreyfuss said, "It's like ringing the dinner bell."

Sharks?

Yep and it would only take one female being on her period in the "Big Swim" to turn it into a "Feeding Frenzy".

:O

Funny thing about sharks:
in the last 100 years, the band Great White has killed twice as many people as the shark great white

I do the polar bear thing in Lake Michigan every new years... water in the 30s.  *******. :)

That alcatraz thing sounds interesting.  I could probably do it with maybe a month to get back into swim shape.  Flying there isnt possible though.  I've been swimming in more alcohol than water lately, so it might be difficult, but certainly doable. :D

Good luck Habu!
