The editor of a Norwegian Christian newspaper has apologised to Muslims for publishing cartoons lampooning Prophet Muhammad that triggered a furore including the burning of Norway's embassy in Syria.
Vebjoern Selbekk, who initially defended his 10 January publication of the cartoons in Magazinet as an expression of press freedom, shook hands after his apology with a Muslim leader in Norway who said he considered the controversy over.
"I address myself personally to the Muslim community to say that I am sorry that your religious feelings have been hurt," Selbekk told a news conference on Friday.
"It was never our intent to hurt anyone.
"I, as editor, did not fully understand how hurtful the publication of the facsimile was. I would like to apologise for that today."
He also said he "deeply regretted" upsetting Muslims.
Death threats
Selbekk, among the first to reprint cartoons which appeared last year in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten, had first said he had no reason to apologise.
He says he has received more than 20 death threats by e-mail.
Thousands of Syrian demonstrators set fire to the Norwegian and Danish embassies at the weekend and Norwegian troops in Afghanistan have come under attack from protesters.
Norwegian flags have been burnt in Palestinian demonstrations.
Selbekk backed down partly last week, saying he would not have published the cartoons, including one of Prophet Muhammad wearing a bomb-shaped turban, if he had known the reactions they would provoke.
Apology welcomed
The Islamic Council in Norway welcomed Selbekk's apology and said they would protect him.
"Anyone who touches him, touches us," said Muhammad Hamdan, leader of the council who shook Selbekk's hand after a joint news conference hosted by Norway's Minister of Labour and Social Inclusion Bjarne Haakon Hanssen.
"I understand ... that he has children the same age as mine. I want his children to grow up together, live together in peace, and become friends," Hamdan said.
"Our Prophet Muhammad has said that everyone can make mistakes but the best is the one who expresses regret and asks for forgiveness," he said.
Hanssen praised Selbekk and Hamdan for their accord.
"When these two are building bridges, it creates a basis for reconciliation and a hope that others will do the same."

Smart move. Was about time.
The person that offended did the apologizing and not the government.
-
boy...whaever you do on this planet, in this lifetime....dont give islams prophet a human form, or make fun of him. Will get you stoned to death in muslim countries :cry
-
Thats just how it is and the rest of the world has to deal with it and respect it. I can live with that, but there is no excuse for using violence.
-
How do you stone someone to death non-violently?

Why should anyone have to? Why should we have to walk like we are on eggs because of bellybutton backwards wackos can't be adults about their religion?
Freedom of speech can be ugly, but so can freedom. Civilized people should not have to worry about death threats and riots over silly cartoons, about a silly religion started by a silly con-man in a ****ty desert.

Freedom of speach is a good thing.. one doesnt have to always push the envelope or insult others peoples religion just because you can.
You may feel different.
No law agaist beeing a rude ahole either, but that doesnt mean one has to become one.

Your right you dont have to become one, but those cartoons were mild. I have seen far worse about other groups and they do not act like a bunch of spoiled children and burn things down over it.
Apologising over this sends the wrong message to these ******s.
I do not think western society should step down from this. More apeasment will just make them act worse the next time.

What is your point? Are you saying there is some big conspiracy behind this?
Who was waiting for what?
Western news media was waiting for a chance to make Muslims look like primitive dolts
Or
The Muslims were looking for another excuse to riot and act like idiots again?

Apologising by the government or any offical would be wrong yes. By the offending party....no, _I_ don't think so.

I call this guy a Politically Correct Euro - P***Y! Finally someone had the balls to stand up in public and then he gets his nuts chopped off so he goes. Things like this truly piss me off. What happened to the days gone by when we could truly tell someone how we felt and work it out like true humans instead of being such mealy mouthed P***Y's and always apologizing for saying something other people don't like.

The muslim _fundamentalists_ are always looking for an excuse. Extremists always look for an excuse or don't really need one at all.
The majority of the moderate muslims may perhaps be offended, but thats it. They don't do anyting about it.

I agree, and don't give two ****s about what some editor is doing.
It would be a very bad thing for your government to do do.
I just think it was a sad thing for the editor to do, but I am not in his shoes getting death threats from nut jobs who very well might do it.
Still when you are right, you say **** off to the wackos, not sorry for upsetting you.

We should keep giving them every excuse we can, so they will keep showing the world how lame they are.
Then maybe at some point the "mainstream" Muslims will get rid of them, or the rest of the world will.

No one in the government has apologised or will ever do so.
If they did they would not survive the next election, and would prolly have to leave office even before that.

Ok thats good to hear.

the protests on the street? All this flyers where made just against

(translation of the apology)
"As you may be aware, polls in Norway have shown that the most people believe a terrorist attack is immenent and we wish to apologize to hopefully decrease that risk.
In the future, all civilized countries will refrain from mocking the Muslim religion in fear of violent reprisals... you have won and we shall remove any freedoms of speech as they relate to mocking the Muslim religion.
Off-topic, we may be able to have our spines replaced with something that doesn't have the consistency of jello."
-
My apologies to anyone from Norway... you're a good people, I'm just surprised that the newspaper is bowing to terror.

He may have realised his stupidity, or maybe he fears for his life. Sometimes it may be wise to swallow a few camels :D
He did say he aplogised for printing something that may have offended other peoples belifs, but he did not apologise for using his freedom of speach. There is a difference, but maybe one the offended party may not care about.

Looks like we have a lot more supporters for flag burning as freedom of speech.

If one of those guys burned a norwegian flag infront of me, i would feel like setting fire to one copy of their holy book.

I'm all for those who want to excercise their freedom of speech. But don't excercise that on my property. Then I'll excercise my trespassing rights, and beat them off my property. :) I've got a Louisville Slugger signed by the best DH in baseball history just for that job. :D
God Bless America (Because we certainly know the liberals won't)

Looks like 'they' don't accept apologies. The ambassadors from Syria, Iran and Indonesia have been recalled today due to some concrete info that their lives are in danger

Well, at least we've learned one thing from all this.
Appearently violence and terrorism are effective means of getting what you want from some people.

No AKWabbit. We have also learned that "some people" have the courage to apologize when they realize they've screwed up. Perhaps that's why "some people" are not hated around the world like "some other people" we know.

Do you know how he looked like?
If I draw him as a stick figure does that give him a human form?
If I draw a potato and write his name on it does that count?
The cartoons were in bad taste and a provocation. They should not have been published. On the other hand, the muslim response is completly out of proportion indicating that the cartoons themselves are just a excuse. The riots are fueled by leaders with interests who ceased the oppertunity and are riding the wave.

Ask me if I give a rat's bellybutton if some imam, looking for a reason to declare war on me and mine regardless of what we do, thinks about a cartoon that shows exactly how he acts. They hate us anyway. They hate freedom and tolerance. It ain't the cartoons. Its the fact that my wife and daughter don't look like a walking bolt of cloth when they leave the house. Its the fact that I trim my beard. Its the fact that I don't support wiping the Jewish people off the face of the Earth. Its the fact that I refuse to tamely submit to their laws, and convert to their religion.

Implying that if they weren't liberals they could? Implying that someone who is conservative can actually bless America? Implying that you have deified your cause? Implying that you're leader is god-like? Which leads us to the conclusion that he must be the anti-christ.
Thanks Rip.

So only Conservatives love their country and are willing to die for it?
I guess that means this guy:

"So many minority youths had volunteered ... that there was literally no room for patriotic folks like himself."
Must have been a Liberal who found the light of conservatism after his fearful avoidance of the draft.
Got it Rip.... Are your garage walls padded too?

I love liberals in the Military...
They can't wait to whip out the ole "I served in the Military" card
like an excited trophy wife using her husbands credit card,
while debating conservatives who question why they hate our country. Yet then turn around and talk about how they were "forced to serve" or "lied to/tricked" into serving. Why would they be proud of that? :huh

Your words, not mine. I just know that we're heading in the wrong direction when I speak of the liberal agenda.
And not to side track your rant, but my original post commented about Liberals blessing America, never heard one say God Bless America.
-
I think the day after 9/11 pretty much the entire congress sang "God Bless America" on the capital steps. Reps and Dems, Cons and Libs.
I remember this because I remembering thinking to myself, that's it, that's all our elected leaders have is to stand on the steps and sing a song. That's the standard we've lowered ourselves to expect?
Now, I'm not sure how saying God Bless America makes one more or less in love with this country, but if that's your litmus test, go with it.
I do know my in-laws, who imigrated from Europe do say what a great country alot, but I'm not sure they've ever said God Bless America.
I think we play into both parties hands when we do the label thing. That's what they want so they can continue to keep just enough of both parties in power to not allow a third party in.
