I just saw this from BlackFive's blog, and since WWII aviation is what got most of us into AH:
http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=48808
The University of Washington's student senate rejected a memorial for alumnus Gregory "Pappy" Boyington of "Black Sheep Squadron" fame amid concerns a military hero who shot down enemy planes was not the right kind of person to represent the school.
Student senator Jill Edwards, according to minutes of the student government's meeting last week, said she "didn't believe a member of the Marine Corps was an example of the sort of person UW wanted to produce."
Yes he was the one who came up with the "show me a hero..." quote, and he had a bit of a hard time adjusting to regular life after WWII. But he was an alumnus and did serve quite honorably. The poke at the military shows the kind of ignorant arrogance displayed by some who really should know better. The "rich white guys" quote, if it was really said that way, speaks of complete ignorance. Does anybody have more first hand information about this?
-
Ashley Miller, another senator, argued "many monuments at UW already commemorate rich white men."
there goes the next democrat national convention keynote speaker.
-
Read the minutes:
http://senate.asuw.org/secretary/minutes/senate/12/02-07-2006.pdf
Sounds like most of the students didn't really know anything about Boyington. A poorly presented proposal results in rejection.
This is not worth getting your panties all knotted up.

Dunno,
When I served on the Student Council at St. Andrews (I ended up resigning because even as a socially liberal pagan, I didn't meet the de facto requirement to be an active and vociferous Communist in favor of enforced homosexual indoctrination) you wouldn't have been able to sell any statue on the basis that he was a white, male member of the military.
However if one had simply sold it as a statue honoring an individual who was born into a dysfunctional family, was divorced multiple times, who hated and resisted authority and was frequently in trouble with the law, who struggled with Alcoholism all his life, who almost had his career destroyed by age discrimination, spent much of his life destitute, and finally died of cancer - probably due to the fact that the government doesn't spend enough on healthcare, etc., etc. then you might have been able to swing it.
You just have to remember the heroes bad, victims good, rule... P.S. Try to be as shrill as possible when making such a presentation, it always helps.

The names Jill and Ashley are traditionally reseved for the feminine gender and are therefore, not generally referencing "Nancy boys"...
-
I stand by what I said. :D
-
originally part of the minutes
Hala Dillsi noted that GBLTC is having auditions for the drag show this week.
Selma Dillsi said APS is having its annual Human Rights Film Fest on February 15th-19th.
Jill Edwards noted that Honors Croquet League is holding a match this Saturday.
Ashley Miller said this Thursday during noon passing periods groups would be playing The Privilidge Game in front of the HUB.
It was noted that tickets for the Vagina Monologues are currently available in the HUB ticket office.
Jon Lee said Innocence Project Northwest is having a screening at the Burke Museum regarding the death penalty.
Karl Smith noted the ACLU is having a meeting in Kane Hall this Saturday.
Things are a little different from when I went to university in the midwest...
Back then we had a campus group called "Nuke the Whales" whose entire purpose was to irritate the extreme lefties, but I have a feeling the joke might not go over well now.
I AM glad I missed the human rights film fest.

Hm... after reading the minutes, it seems they did say those things quoted in the article. Although the poke was aimed at the USMC, wouldn't this offend any serviceman or woman? Not to mention the other racially motivated (and completely incorrect) poke. I guess I'm still too young to be apathetic. Or it could just be me fearing what it would be like in 18 years when my still unborn son will be looking for further education.
Although they really didn't seem to know who they were talking about, should that excuse really hold in an institution of higher learning? Yes, I know... beer, partying, etc. I guess I was just antisocial.

I remember a bit about that from when I was in college. There was a saying that we should nuke the baby gay whales for Jesus. That was engineered to offend just about anyone who didn't realise it was a "troll" statement. I suppose now you should change it to baby gay muslim whales to make sure EVERYONE gets offended.
For those who are sarcasm challenged, that is and was intended to be sarcasm and not taken seriously. You may now resume your fugue, fume or frappe.....

no, but is scares the hell out of me who ELECTED these morans as their representatives. :O
those "voters" are the future of the country, and this is what they vote for?
US senate in 15 years will be bickering over what color pattern of mauve and white to change the flag to.
-
My T-shirt read "Nuke the Gay Baby Fur Whales"
I either wore that one or my "Disco Sucks"
Did anyone read the minutes? It would seem that some Students voted no because they wanted a more fitting and well thought out tribute. Also the vote was tied and the President of the Senate broke the tie. Hardly the "an active and vociferous Communist" hotbed.

Since they don't teach American history correctly in high school.
What else could you expect.
Back when I graduated HS (1987) I think we spent less than a week on ww2. I'd bet it's just a footnote on a page now.
Shame , the biggest conflict in recorded history is now but a foot note.
Sad part is people who do not know history are doomed to repeat it.
Going to suck when these people do learn how to vote.
Fortunately most don't . Well for now anyway.

It would make Boyington happy to know that his fame exposed another liberal moron.

My word. People really are clutching at straw men today. If you read the minutes, it sounds like they had a debate (look it up if you are not sure, it doesn't happen very often around here). A couple of people made off the wall, negative comments which were argued against, including the remark "those that fought in WWII were heroes".
Seems to me it was a poorly thought out plan, short on specifics, and that's why it was rejected. It was noted that they had plenty of war memorials about the place, so it can't be as anti-military as some would like to believe.
-
Too late.
Every bum in Seattle is a memorial

There should be no statues erected of any military servicemen at all. Muhammad Ali should not be celebrated because he fought people for money too. Are they really that ignorant or just a bunch of croquet playing, vagina monologue watching drag queens?

They should read his book.

Looks like Ms. Edwards statement in the article is going to get her some grief. A USMC vet drafted up a piece of legislation, had it cosigned by other vets and submitted it to the UofW student council. I won't post the text here without his permission, but basically it says she will submit a written apology to all who serve and guarantee her freedom and rights, which will be printed in the school newsletter. She must also read up on Col. Boyington. The bottom line is her seat at the council.
Her e-mail address got posted also - in a forum populated by lots of active duty and vets.
She's got a right to an opinion of course. Now she just has to deal with other folks exercising their rights to an opinion...
-
If you wish to read the UoW Student Senate forum:

College kids acting like fools? Say it isn't so!

There will be a time in the not so distant future, that those types will be wishing the Pappys of the world were still around.

You mean like when they're older and wiser?

This guy seems to be of a similar mindset...
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,184951,00.html
ALAN COLMES, CO-HOST: This is Alan in New York. Should we not have military?
SANDOVAL: I don't think we should have a military. Absolutely.
COLMES: We shouldn't have a military? Wait a minute. Hold on. The United States should not have a military?
SANDOVAL: What good has it done for us in the last five years? That's right. What good has it done us...
HANNITY: Good grief.
SANDOVAL: ... in the last five years.
COLMES: Gerardo, wait a second.
SANDOVAL: We think about the billions that we're spending in Iraq right now, if we spend it on schools. We should not...
COLMES: The United States should not have a military?
SANDOVAL: That's correct.
COLMES: Are you kidding me?
SANDOVAL: The United States should not have a military. All in all, we would be in much, much, much better shape.
Yes, I know - so what else is new here? It's just another politician putting his foot in his mouth. And it's only Hannity and Colmes. In this case this guy is so over the top here that it's almost funny. He's just a member of San Fran's Board of Supervisors though. Good thing we didn't have folks like him making decisions here - we got and still have the USS Missouri.
-
If I went to UofW I would go find the Republican Advocate Club and see what they feel about their 'University govenment' pulling this crap...or go to the Dean of the School. This is horsepoop.
I must say though...when I was in school only a few years back, no one cared about Student Government/Senate. It was a friggin joke. The people that won and 'acted on behalf of the students' were the people with the best Slogan's during campaign time. They never did Jack SH** except plan for lefties events. No one else cared except the Right Activists.
I went to a LARGE school; I assume as big or larger than UofW.

OMG this is such a BIG issue!!!!111 joo should all hire some elephants and go trample all those students!!!1111

or better yet send them on a two week all expense paid vacation to france. the boredom will kill them.
-
Naw send them to Belgium, then on the return hike into france they could take the countries surrender.................... Just hadda do it :p :t
-
This is a great decision IMHO. Don`t think Pappy would appreciate a monument of himself surrounded by clueless, ungratefull morons.
-
Update: UW council approved a slightly modified memorial.
http://www.washington.edu/alumni//uwnewslinks/200604/article_medal.html
-
In addition, the University of Washington Foundation has established a new Lt. Col. Gregory "Pappy" Boyington Memorial Scholarship Fund. This fund will provide scholarships to undergraduate students who are either United States Marine Corps veterans or are the children of a United States Marine Corps veteran. Nearly $18,500 in gifts and pledges have already been raised. For more information, please see Boyington Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Now there's something worth sending some money to.
