Title: Olympic ice hockey
Post by: Panzzer on February 15, 2006, 03:58:46 PM
The first games have been kinda disappointing. Well, Finland won Switzerland 5-0, but the games haven't been that good - yet. The best one I've seen this far is the Latvia-USA, that was fun & exciting to watch (well, I'm still watching it, but I don't know if this is live or not -- edit: the third period hasn't been as much fun as the first two). But I'm expecting the tempo to go up (and to see more checks) when the games get tougher...

USA  vs. Latvia was a tie 3-3. :cry

Its so much slower then the new NHL. As cool watching Ovechkin and Afiniganov play on the same line.

I just watched a collage of the Slovakia-Russia game (5-3). Man, did they score beautiful goals in that one! Not much to see in the defensive play in that game, though. But they (both teams) have skill in their power plays.

Drury could of made a good goal in the 3rd if wasnt for the hooking.

Jeebus, I thought letting the Italians have two goals was bad.

I'm with ya on that...the games so far have been somewhat dull. I think they will get more exciting as we get further into it.

best thing I've seen so far was men's downhill and men's half pipe

Now that I think of it. Out of the tons of hours of all the events Ive watched so far. its been pretty dull. Mens halfpipe and luge have been best so far.

Downhill and hockey has been fun to watch.

Half pipe is dull no matter who is doing it. Same goes for moguls... BOORING.

Figure skating is dull, but the women are enjoyable to watch (for obvious reasons).

I liked the moguls, fast-paced and it was quite easy to understand the score count (compared to half-pipe). I haven't seen any of the figure skaters as yet (but there's a young woman from my home town competing in there). :)

Uh, this thread was about the ice hockey... I'm still betting my euros on Canada.

Figure skating was on here yesterday. Wasnt very impressive. Alot of falls.

Ive found curling to be imensely boring but extremly addicting to watch.

Im gona bet my money on Canda to win both gold in Mens and Womens. U.S. will take silver in both.

The opening round robin matchups are lousy... the NHL players are all tired, as they had games on the weekend then hopped on a plane to Turin, 6-9 timezones away, and you've got good teams playing chumps. The later round robin games will be better, players getting used to eachother, etc... Canada vs. CZE will be one to watch for sure. Czech's are gonna get destroyed, tho. The elimination round will be great. I look forward to watching Canada stomp Sweden in the gold medal game :aok

For the first time in years I see Russian team PLAYING and not simply skating slowly for fun.

For first time in history they skrewed up the first game at Olympics, but I hope they will at last do their best. In Italy we have enough Russian and xUSSR fans, unlike 2002 when it looked like Russians were not allowed to play against their NHL masters.

And last year we had a beautiful championship, really worth watching. We also won European Series and Dynamo Msk won Euro club championship.

My view of the hockey tournament so far..

Best games so far...

Russia-Slovakia
Canada-Switzerland
Canada-Finland

Most impressive teams so far (not in a ranking order)..

Slovakia
Russia
Finland
Switzerland

Most disapointing teams so far (not in a ranking order)..

Canada
Czech Rep
Sweden

Jarku Ruuttu should have been banned from the entire olympic games.

Tex

Ps. Best hockey accomplishment so far... Swedens win over US in the womens semi final. Ds.

It boggles my mind.  I mean our checking line is Joe Thornton, Kris Draper and Shane Doan.

In thier defence, Gerber had the game of his life.  But against the Finns....if they played all three periods like they did in the second they probably would have won.  Hell if the game was decided by the high-light reel they would have won, so absolutely beautiful plays...that they couldn't capitalize on.  But man, did they look like crap in the first.

PS: Something I noticed during the Fin game.  During the powerpls the right defenceman let the puck out of the Fin zone no less then three times.  I know McCabe was responsible for at least one of those...heartbreaking.

Canada made it quite easy for the finish goalie (hate spelling his name).

Sure canada played at a fantastic pace and had tons of shots but there where no one timers, no deflections just straight on shots.

Sure playing crash the net and scoope for rebounds is a good way to up the pace and create scooring chances. But you need to set up the onetimers and to deflect the shots when you have men infront of the net. If you dont do that it becomes too predictable and relativly easy for the goalie.

Also its painfull to watch Chris Pronger on big ice.  He is sooo slow its painfull he looked like a cone on the ice.

Tex.

Only 4:3?!

From what I saw - Finns had to tear Americans into a Union Jack.

I am going home now, to see the last period of Russia-Canada. If I'll see the whole game - I'll have a heart attack.

Is there a possibility for Finns and Slovaks to meet before final? They are definetly two best teams at the Olympics.

BTW, is it true that Finnish team consists only of NHL players? I have heard on Russian TV that the only player from Finnish league is a third goalkeeper from Karpat (BTW, a funny name for a Finnish team),
Title: Olympic ice hockey
Post by: wasq on February 22, 2006, 01:46:58 PM
Here are the non-NHL players:

3 Petteri Nummelin, Lugano SUI
25 Jukka Hentunen, Lugano SUI
30 Fredrik Norrena, Linköping SWE
32 Niklas Bäckström, Kärpät
77 Antti-Jussi Niemi, Frölunda SWE

Only Bäckström is from Finnish league (Oulun Kärpät), so the Russian TV is correct in that sense.

What a huge refering mistake....

Canada should have had the equalizer... it hit the back of the net and went back in under the keeper BEFORE the ref blew the whistle....

But then... said it before... Pronger.... he might as well retire.. but so can AT LEAST 30% of the defenders in the NHL...

We are going to see a HUUUUGE shift in defenders over the next two three years... to smaller and faster defenders...

Showed it on TV here several times from several angles.

It was a hard shot that went in and bounced out very quickly. It bounced back in under the goalie. Wasnt a issue of just cutting the puck bounced of the back of the crease.

I saw Bettman on the Olympics the other day. FWIW, I think he's wrong.

Bringing the NHL to the Olympics hasn't helped hockey and it certainly hasn't helped the NHL.

I think it's high time we let the "amateurs" play again or at the very least, keep the major leagues out.

It's just not worth it. Off the top of your head without doing any research can you name the three teams that medaled in 2002? How about 1998? Every hockey fan I know can tell you where they were when the U.S. won the gold in 1980, but will be hard pressed to remember what has happened since.

Nope, just gold and silver.  But that was the only game that counted.  As far as helping hockey, I don't know.  But our win in Salt Lake city was massive, I mean truely massive here.  It brought our country together like nothing in my lifetime.  Heck maybe like nothing since the Canada/Soviet Hockey Summit in '72.

@Subject of Canadas goal.

The whistle came when Nabokov was on the ice. The puck went under him in and out which and hence the puck was in the net before the whistle.

I mean you cant really blame anyone no one saw it not even the players.

@Subject of NHL and Olympics

The biggest problem with hockey on a global level is that NHL is a bunch of arrogant arses and think they are above the international ice hockey federation.

Due to this ice hockey doesnt have a world championship where the best players compete against each other. Its a scandal in it self. Every sport worth the name has a world championship where the best athletes compete against each other. Soccer, Athletics, Alpine sports, Basketball, Rugby, you freekin name it.

But not hockey.

This is the biggest problem hockey has when it comes to spreading the sport.

Currently the Olympics is the only championship where the best players face of against each other for their nation. Dont give me the crap about the NHL propaganda tournament called World Cup where Canadian refs referee games between Canada and the Czech Rep. Where everything is setup to create Canada vs US finals.

If the World Championships would have involved the best players then the NHL could have stayed out of the olympics. But now, no way.

Imho what hockey as a global sport needs is for the NHL to become part of the IIHF and have the following tournament schedule.

World Championships every 4 years, between olympic years.
Olympics every 4 years.
World Junior Championships every year.

Those who lost just didn't want to win as much as the other teams.  You can't just assume you are going to win because you come from a good league, you still need to work your bellybutton off.

Russia-Canada game with US judge. WTFG. I love olympics. And I still can't understand why Canada Cup stayed in Canada in 1981.

Unfortunately, in semi-final Russia meets Finland. It means that we'll get bronze again :(

I bet ten to one on Finland :(

But OTOH I already said that Slovaks will win over CZ.

If our team will win - i think that Msk will simply blow up. Kaboom.

After 1999 world championship in Leningrad... Well... That time Russian team was #13. Slogan was "Pack up and go back to your America!". Now we have a TEAM. Not only a gang of North American stars.

When I was a kid we all waned to be like Kharlamov. Or as Tretyak. Kharlamov-Petrov-Mikhailov, Fetisov-Larionov-Krutov - Real Men.

Nice to hear "Ros-Si-Ya!" and good old "Shai-Bu! Shai-Bu!" from Russian fans in Italy.

I have to admit that you were right. ;) Finland had a very solid performance from all the lines and the goalie. Not too many good scoring chances for Russia. With a similar game in the final, Sweden shouldn't be too much of a threat to Finland's gold. :D

Isn't looking too good for Russia now, Czechs lead 2-0. Oh well, a period and a half to go still. I hope that Russia can equalize and then win the bronze...

edited a period later: Looks like team Russia didn't recover from their loss to Finland yesterday - they haven't been even close to the level they were against Canada. 2-0 still, Russia hasn't produced any decent attacks. :(

Second time in 50 years...

What really surprises me is how Swedes could win in final. After they lost to Russia 5:0, and after their poor playing in Euro finals last year.

Russians got what they deserved, but I am really sorry about Finns :(

The Finnish Team really couldn't play at same level as they did in the game against Russia which IMO was maybe the best play I've ever seen from the finns.

Silver Medal is a good achievement considering the low expectations before the tournament. Great hockey with a great attitude.

Yup Wmaker. The Finnish team played some awsome hockey. Watched most of their games later in the tournament, specially the one against Russia and they were just awsome. The Russians just couldn't do anything against it.

Silver Medal is great, it really is. I'm very happy that the finals were between Finland and Sweden, like I said in another thread, Scandinavia rules!

And it makes me so much happier that two of the three big ones were kicked out before the Semi finals :D

The final like the entire tournament never really took off... sure was a tactically well played game but still never really felt intense, except for last 5min...

Looking at just that game Sweden deserved the win but over the entire tournament... definatly not... just the fact that they folded against slovakia to get switzerland sucked arse and made it hard for me to really enjoy this win...

Finland was the best team of the tournament but it doesnt help when you dont win the final...

Imho this tournament was the farwell tour of the old stars... and it was a farwell performance in the spirit of "we take up place for the younger generation just because of our name and paychecks".

Look at Canada, satisfied with past performance and no hunger at all.
Look at the US, so pathetically slow that the famous american heart and grit didnt help em.
Look at Russia, the young generation carrying the old generation to what looked like a team effort... Im thinkin of players like Yashin, waste of space.
Look at Sweden, no speed old but so tactically smart that they managed to save a bit of energy for the final and hence win it.
Look at the Czech Rep, built around the old stars who didnt show any hunger at all.

The tournament would have been much more intense and enjoyable if Canada, US and Czechs would have been more hungry.

The only teams I really enojyed watching hockey wise was Finland, Slovakia and Russia (half of the team).

Next time in Vancouver Im quite sure we will see a totally different style of hockey. What Finland, Russia and Slovakia showed was a pretaste  of the futre hockey. Fast and high paced. The new rules in the NHL will promote the development of fast players both forwards AND defenders. Speed will be much more of a factor over the comming years and it will show in what teams will dominate over the next few years.

Sweden, Canada and the US will have some big catching up to do over the next few years. I just cant see Sweden and US beeing powerhouses in Vancouver if the game turns towards speed. Slovakia and Russia have a big advantage in speed atm. Russia will have a marvelous team over the next decade and if slovakia can develope a goaltender of class they will be breathing down the russian neck. Finland is a bit hard to tell for me as most speed comes from older players atm and the younger finish players arnt making an impact yet (NHL wise). Czechs have a tradition of speed as well but I do feel the next generation beeing a bit thin.

Anyways still feels like this tournament was a "end".

IMO Russia hardly desirved to be in the Olympics after the games they played. Too much roughing and they aimed more towards hurting the other team players then they did winning games.

Gongrats Sweden...

I hate to admit but Sweden really played better this time , Finns were standing on wooden legs until last 5 mins....

I think Swedish team always has somekind of psychologigal advantage during matches... and lots of luck!

Basically the game comes down to the last save by Lundqvist on Jokinen.  It was a great play by Finland and an incredible save.
