Out of guys I saw at the cons I would have to go with Rip.
Pongo and Lazs would be the ones I would want beside me in a dark alley.

Safe to say that from the way some folks talk on Vox a good deal of the AH population can and do do better then 308.
They just do it over the course of the night and 12-16 ounces at time;)
No disrespect ment. But what exactly is the point of being able to benchpress so much weight other then to be able to say you can do it?

For the life of me I couldn't remember any of those snide glib remarks about the air force when I met Ammo at the con. :D
And Raub looks like a platoon sgt., a testament to the army's pt program.
Like I said before, you could spot the guys who were still on active duty from across the room.

I just did 65 sit ups in 1 minute on a bet. Didn't hurt a bit and I could have done 30 more easily.

I think it depends on yer body weight.
I mean if you weigh 150lbs and bench 308 thats purty danged good in my book.
Me on the other hand even when I weighed 275lbs was very lucky to push up 350lbs pretty lame.
I am also lucky to have man boobs so I dont need to do a bunch of chest work:O

O yea i'll see your 65 sit ups in a minute to 160 situps in 2 minutes for my ROTC's Physical Fitness Test!:p And with my FEEKING 27 push-ups..... slipped in the first 50 seconds of my 2 minute time and I was out...stupid grass...and I jogged/walked a mile in 16 minutes while talking to someone in that test would of tried if I hadn't failed the push ups.....stupid grass... :furious :mad:

I am 6'3" and 260 lbs of muscle, I coulda started for the steelers but I was injured in school, so I became a ninjasniper and went to afghanistan instead.
My girlfriend was like the only chick ever to become a navy seal in real, ever! but she was killed in lower crapistan on a tippy-top secret mission.
I won every military medal the US,UK,Mexico, and Slovakia ever gives out, and killed about a BAZILLION commies/terrorists/liberals, and the President of lower crapistan, but that was a classified mission.

There actually is (was) an unknown gold medalist. In the original Paris games, an American rowing crew somehow lost their coxswain (the little guy in the back who steers and yells 'stroke') and the recruited a French kid out of the crowd. The crew won it all, and they never did get the kid's name in the record.

308? :huh You can't come up with that number with free weights. It would have to be either 305 or 310. The bar weighs 45. Free weights come in increments of 45, 35, 25, 10, 5 and 2 1/2. So you're either lying, or you're using a machine. If you're using a machine to bench, you're really not benching what the machines says you are. (And for the record, my current max bench, 1 rep, is 295. I hit 315 last year but have not been into serious heavy lifting since)

Rip, there's no advantage/gain from "finding out a max" anyways. WTFG otherwise though.

Agree Mash, however a "target" can be a good motivator. My target 2 years ago was 315 (thats 3 X 45 lbs weights each side, on a 45 lb. bar). I was stuck on a plateau of 285 for the longest time, like 3 years! Hired a personal trainer for 2 months and he busted my butt, almost puked the first couple of times working with him. But he got me over the hump. Once I hit 315 I felt I'd achieved a goal I'd set out to do.
Now I'm just in maintenance mode. I start with 185, then pyramid up to 285, the last set I can only to about 3-4 reps. Then the pecs are completely fatigued, and thats the goal, fatigue them so they tear, then rebuild. Then its onto incline dumbells, decline bench (on a machine). The next week I mix it up, I do max dumbbell bench only, then other pec machines to achieve max muscle fatigue.
I do like to "check my max" every now and then, about once every 3 months, just so that the personal trainer 28 year old female trainer will come over and spot me, while I get a nice shot if you know what I mean. :D
I'm getting older too, (45 now) so I have to be careful.

Ironically, you wouldn't have chronic back problems if you lifted...weight lifting cures back problems. I had chronic back problems until I started strengthening my legs, stomach muscles. Those two major muscle groups support your lower back. You can do this without lifting too, Curval. Sounds funky, but while taking a shower, or standing in line at a bank, whatever...just hold your buttock muscles tight, along with your stomach muscles, for 30 seconds...then relax, do this again for 3 or 4 sets, a couple times during the day. Your back problems (if muscle related back problems) will disappear. Just don't be flexing your butt muscles when there is a FDB standing behind you, that's a sure mating ritual and you could be inviting trouble.

Nah Rip, it isn't muscular. I have a ruptured disk at L5S1. I have avoided surgery thus far but basically I am in constant pain because of it. Surgeon says that if I had the operation (diskectomy) I would be in exactly the same predicament in 3-5 years as I would without it as the disk is going to lose all its fluid and shrink into scar tissue eventually. I rather not risk surgery if that is the case and would rather live with the pain.

I feel for you Curval. I had a muscle cramp in my lower back last year and was laid up for 2 weeks. Pain was like nothing you can imagine if you don't have back pain.

I used to be able to bench 425lbs, squat 850lbs, and ran a 5.1 - 40yarder, I was 6'5 300lbs at the time though when I was in college playing ball about 6 years ago lol, I do believe thats the last time I ever saw a weight lol If I had to guess now... maybe 300 lol maybe lol. But now I can shoot nickel sized groups at 500 yards with a .300 magnum :)... that counts right lol

I used to be able to stand on one leg, walk, and turn around with some 350 lbs in my arms...but that was years ago.
Bench press, - naaaaa. 160 lbs perhaps?

A guy I went to high school with used to do reps with the Universal machine's weight peg set at max (can't remember if that's 300 or 325 lbs) and a sprinter from the track team sitting on top of the handlebars. We're talking well over 400 lbs here. This is a 17 year old we're talking about.
I just spoke to Don on the phone the other day, first time since high school (we graduated in 1971). We went through the mandatory asking how each other is, etc. When I commented I was quite a bit heavier than the last time he saw me, his retort was "Yeah, you were real skinny, huh?".
I resisted the urge to reply "Yes unlike you you muscle-bound SOB" (I had already told him how he could find me ;))

PS - I could tell a funny story about the time the school karate freak decided he would challenge Don to a fight....with hilarious results :)

Well similar to Iceman the last time I did a max bench press was in 1995 when I was finished with college ball and getting ready for some pro scouts coming in to run us through what I call "the last chance in hell" workouts to try and sign as a free agent for someone in the NFL. My bench was 415 with a leg press of 710 (no squats due to previously torn ACL) and my 40 yard times were 4.95 and 5.01. However since then I haven't lifted for a max weight because I just don't need to do it.
