DOHA, February, 15 2006, (IslamOnline.net) – The Norwegian parliament has amended the Penal Code to criminalize blasphemy in the wake of the republication of Danish cartoons that lampooned Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) by a Norwegian magazine, Christian and Muslim leaders in Norway said on Tuesday, February 14.
“Law 150-A, which has been approved by parliament, criminalizes blasphemy and clearly prohibits despising others or lampooning religions in any form of expression, including the use of photographs,” Norway’s Deputy Archbishop Oliva Howika told reporters after a meeting in Doha with Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, the head of the International Union of Muslim Scholars.
Howika was among a Norwegian delegation that also included the chairman of the Supreme Islamic Council in Norway, Mohamed Hamdan.
“Under the new law, the crime of blasphemy will be punished either by a fine or imprisonment,” Howika said, promising Qaradawi to fax him a copy of the law after being published in the country’s official gazette.
Hamdan regretted the burning of the Norwegian embassy in the Syrian capital Damascus, but said the government had blamed the magazine for the violent reaction.
“The Norwegian government made it clear more than one time that it would not condone blasphemy,” he said.

Glad i live in a country that still has some testicular matter.
-
If that's true they might as well just build a brand new mosque right in the middle of the capital and move the government inside so their masters can tell them what to do.

WTF?
am I getting this correct? ...they are "blaming" the magazine for the death threats, burning down of embassies and rioting?
the concept of restraint and responsability seems missing???

someone remind us of norway's glorious past. play the viking kitties video please.

Yes I’m aware of it. It’s not true. This rumor was published my IslamOnline, but our government has denied it. In any case Norway already has an “anti-blasphemy” law, but it is a dead law that hasn’t been used since 1933.

I suspect it'll be far more likely that in scandanavia some time sooner rather than later that somebody will declare 'shenanigans', and they'll all dress up as Vikings. There will be torches, much clashing of swords on shields and stamping of feet; then they'll chuck all the arabs into the fjords, sell their women & kids into slavery and burn the mosques.
The next day they'll go on back to electing ugly women politicans, driving audi's and *****ing about the price of pizza.

Uhhm...
DAMMIT Hangtime.
Lost the element of surprise. If you have any knowledge about the Viking way of warmongering, you know this is very important.
FFS, now we must wait a little again.
I'll tell the others to don their normal clothes for now.
Blooody...I was so looking forward to this and everything.

Its not true.
Like Harry said the law is an old "sleeper" and wont be used. Some christian fundamentalits wants the law to be activly used but it wont.
Dont belive everything you read... your source should be a clue.

HHHMMMM the only source so far that it is NOT true is Harry and Nilsen. Obviously we have a significant credibility problem here. Whom should we disbelieve more??? :O :huh
:p

*Blaring Bullhorn*
Nilsen, Drop the Pen and Step Slowly Away From the Cartoon!!!

outlawing "blasphemy"? Oh boy... bad news for Norwegians. "Blasphemy" is such a vague and subjective term.... I feel sorry for the first bugger charged with it.

If it already is a law, what if Muslims or Christians demand that the law is upheld? How can one "Ignore the law" George Bush is taking it from both sides here in the States for breaking laws that may or may not even exist.
At least everyone who says he is breaking the law can't site one. I saw the source which is why I ask a Norwegian for clarification.

It wont be upheld, and it doesnt matter if muslims or christans wants it to be upheld. Its like the fact that the king here is actually the top ranking military officer. If war broke out he would not act like one just because the constitution sais he is. His first order would be that the top ranking real officer takes command. Just a formality... tradition.

I belive that in Iceland there is still an excisting law that sheep-thiefs are to be hung. Of course it isn't being used...
So, we go plunder,- as pirates of course. Steal sheep from the middle east and leave pigs instead :D

That would be the first guy that questions the LW flgiht model logic
in here? :D

nooooooooooooo.. that would be 'heracy'.
I believe the difference is burning at the stake vs stoning.
-
The reason really for not removing the law is not so hard to understand for me anyway.
If one were to start from scratch and create a new law system then the blasphemy law would not be included. Now that we have had this law for so many years then going thru the system to remove it would send a much stronger signal than to just let it sleep and never get used. Passing and removing laws here is, and should be a long and intricate trip thu the system and it cant go un-noticed by the public. If the government did decide to remove it then they would also inform the population and telling everyone "hey, blasphemy is now legal"......bad idea.
This was never a problem until the right-wing christian paper decided to make a mess. No singe muslim, or group here has _ever_ insulted christians in the media. They do many odd things, but they do not talk crap and respects other peoples belives.
-
we got the same thing here... useless laws still on the books, unenforced. Nobody's been hung for horse buggering lately.
