New nVidia beta drivers (83 series) available from http://www.guru3d.com have supposedly fixed the dual core issue/
Also check in your BIOS your PCI timer is set at 128.
I was getting lockups with a 7800GS with it set at 64.
Now running 1280x1024, 8xAA, and full eyecandy at 85 fps (monitor limit).

Please forgive my ignorance of the matter, but what was it doing before?

Two possibly related problems -
1) AH2 would start then the clipboard would just spin around and around. This only seems to affect XP users.
2) Hard crash/lock up on startup of AH2.
1) Seems to be a Windows XP thread handler and poss dual core optimised drivers (80 series) problem.
2) Seems to be a driver/pci latency issue.
My prob was 2, it was only happening with the new 7800GS card I got (6800GT worked fine), and I tracked it down to my PCI latency being to low (was at 64), and buggy nvidia dual core optimised drivers.
From the 82.65 onwards the dual core problem appears fixed (finally).
I have also sent Skuzzy a registry hack that disables dual core optimizations in nVidias drivers, (for Win XP only, may fix problem #1).
